@Mrs. Yoyo: I've read lots about the benefits of phytoestrogens, too - cancer prevention, regulating cholesterol and as PP have mentioned, it's something that is naturally found in a lot of plants, not just soy.

I think as far as diet goes, allergies & sensitivities aside, a healthy balanced diet with exercise is best.
We're vegetarians but that doesn't mean we only eat tofu. We have a broad variety of meals and maybe have something with tofu once or twice a week tops.

I have only had tofu once and wasn't a fan so I probably wouldn't even buy it again to feed to my babies.

@caffeinated: Haha, I am sure it's totally fine! I am absolutely not an expert - there's so much stuff out there, if we believed/followed all of it, we'd eat nothing!

@cvbee: I agree! I still gave LO tofu for dinner though. Lalalalala...

@JerricaBenton: We eat tofu maybe once a week (and no soy milk), so i'm assuming that it won't have much affect on us!

@cvbee: Haha, I definitely feel that way sometimes!

We're more concerned about the possible effects on prepubescent boys and girls. Phytoestrogens are in all kinds of things though - from cosmetic products to lavender. And lots of studies say they are good for cancer prevention and easing the effects of menopause in adults. I just wouldn't have soy every day, that's all.

@caffeinated: It's my understanding that phytoestrogens aren't bad for you, it is just questionable in very high amounts over long periods of time. Nuts, other beans, and veggies all have phytoestrogens. Soy has a huge amount, and the potential issue is with people (like vegetarians) consuming huge amounts. I really don't know a ton about it though.

@caffeinated: hmmm I've never heard that! interesting... I suppose I'd have to look into that further. Flax definitely isn't consumed in large quantities though, so maybe that's why it's not a concern?

@sarac: same here!!

I try to avoid soy because it's not so healthy... and it's also a highly GMO food too :( it's a bummer because I loved edamames!!!

so we don't plan to feed LO tofu. :)

I have given my LO soft tofu (7.5 months) and she absolutely loves it. It's too bad that i should limit her intake though, because it's so easy to prepare.

@JerricaBenton: @sarac: Doing a quick search, flax seeds and other seed oils apparently have the highest phytoestrogen content. Should i be concerned about this as well?? :(

I'm also concerned about the effects of phytoestrogens. My husband encouraged me to limit my tofu, especially during pregnancy so I will limit it in LO's diet, too. I am planning on giving it to her, because I do eat it myself, but probably no more than once every two weeks or so.

No, I don't really think it's good for you, what with the phytoestrogens. I'd be fine with letting someone else feed it to her, and if she grows up liking it she can choose that, but we won't really serve it to her.
