@tororojo: I see that and I'm not even preggers! I feel so lucky to be healthy... I can't imagine how expensive that would be if I wasn't! :(

@Ash: I definitely recommend looking into an AFLAC hospital policy for you--ours came in even handier than expected b/c I was hospitalized with a kidney stone, which is apparently common during pregnancy...yuck! Once that check comes in, we'll actually end up with a little more $ than the hospital stay cost, which we will in turn fork over to our OB for his services. Having a baby is expensive!

@tororojo: The private one asks about maternity etc so I clicked yes... but you're probably right. It's just so darn confusing to me. I don't understand, if I pay the say amount of money every month, why I can't get similar coverage closer to home. That being said, hubby also has AFLAC because of the risky stuff he does outside of his main job (he farms and does constructions too). I'm not on that plan but that definitely is a great idea---something to look into!! Thanks!

@Ash: Obamacare may have changed this, but generally workplace insurance plans have way better coverage than private ones. Private plans used to not cover maternity at all--supposedly that has changed, but it seems like the transition period to the new healthcare system still has hiccups so I wouldn't count on that unless you are 100% positive. Basically, insurance sucks, period! Have you looked into AFLAC coverage for when you give birth/have a hospital stay? That might not help with your co-pay/co-insurance/where to choose care quandary, but a big check after a birth would help offset some of your costs.

My mom told me to check into a private plan through BCBS (which is what both mine and DH's is through our employer). Good prices but crazy deductibles. Why can't I just be happy to have insurance?! LOL I'm not complaining... I'm just confused and annoyed but still grateful. ;)

@Foodnerd81: we're currently only ttc but we keep thinking "what if.." regarding being pregnant and then having LOs and having dr appointments and how we wouldn't want to take a sick baby to the doctor an hour away. Or for my midwife/hospital to be an hour away. The hospital closer to us is the one I just quit (I worked in OB) and the one further is the one I currently work at. Dilemma?!
We'll probably end up paying more for the convenience but it's still so stressful.

That is obnoxious, everything about all insurance has been frustrating to me - and I know I'm lucky to have a decent plan! I have no advice but will offer that I've ended up seeing my OB much more frequently than I anticipated even as a super low risk preggo. Looking at what our bills have been and imagining your scenario, I would seriously regret having taken the 50% over the 20%. With that being said, I haven't had any time-sensitive appointments or emergencies. Wish I had something more helpful to say - maybe just meeting with a potential provider from each plan would help make up your mind if you really liked someone??

That really sucks! I'm sorry, how annoying! Are you currently pregnant? If so, I might suck it up and pay up to have the greater convenience factor. Do you know where you would want to deliver-- like is there a hospital near you that you would much prefer or are there better hospitals closer to work anyway? If you are still TTC, that's tougher. I don't know what I would do, really. Totally understand the need to vent!

Good morning Bees!
I am in need of venting because I am so cranky!

So, last month I took a new job (actually, went back to the job I quit last year) but it is an hour away from where we live. And the once PPO plans are now HMO plans... yuck! Anyways, long story short, because of our location, we fall into the tier that requires $50 copay and 50% coinsurance if we use the services provided closer to us (urgent care, ER, and all doctor's visits). If we drive the 70 minutes to go to the doc, it'd be $20 copay and 20% coinsurance. AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH! This bothers me like crazy. We only go to the doc if we are sick or dying and both agree it would suck having to make the trek in such a situation (urgent or emergent). I keep thinking about what will happen when we're expecting and having the option to drive 20 minutes versus 70 for appointments and labor (or false labor at that). DH's insurance is a PPO but will cost us double the amount of mine ($400 vs $200/month). On top of everything, his employer will give him an extra $160/month to NOT take their insurance which would be just about 2 grand a year but if we take it we'll be paying an extra $2400/year compared to mine.
I just feel like if I am paying the same as my coworkers, I am getting ripped a new one because I live further away than "the majority of the staff". Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr!

Okay, vent over. Not even sure this makes sense but I just hate the idea of taking one insurance and having to drive for a cheaper coinsurance or taking another and paying double but being closer to home.

Anyone else have a similar situation? Or that is an hour away from the hospital?
