Not reading the response but it could be one of a few things or a combo.
Reflux, gassiness, MSPI?
Unfortunately the symptoms for all of them are all very similar!

I would try gas first and eliminate gassy foods from your diet. Citrus, spicy foods, broccoli, google a list, it's pretty long!

Hopefully you find the culprit.

For us, with both babies, gas was a huge problem until their gut matured at around 2 or 3 months. We would burp them for literally 20 minutes between breasts or every 1-2 ounces. We did everything to get them to burp or fart but it was still so bad. I was really debating getting The Windi for LMW. By the time I was ready to pull the trigger, she seemed to grow out of it.

I told my fart routine to a friend on facebook when she said her baby was fussing so much between feedings. She tried it and said he farted 5 huge farts and fell right to sleep!

Basically I laid WJ on his back and pulled his legs up in the air, perpendicular to his body, then circled them around and kind of pushed his legs towards his belly. We'd do this until he farted. It didn't work on LMW but it worked great on WJ.

ETA: it didn't get better for LMW until she started tummy sleeping. Now it's much better!

@Mrs. Sketchbook: was finally able to read through all this! Thanks so much ! The fussy baby link sounds almost identical to what we are going through but I truly feel like he is having some stomach issues as well. I'm going to offer just one side each time I feed today to make sure he is getting more hind milk instead of switching when he pulls off. I hope that helps. Going to try to burp more as well. I do have a pretty forceful let down I think but he never chokes and if he pulls off I just squirt it into a burp cloth until it slows. No idea if i am working with an over supply. I don't feel engorged or pain anymore between feedings ???

I really hope the extra burping and block feeding help today. I just don't want him to hurt ! I hate feeling helpless!

@Ree723: he is taking a daily probiotic ! Started those on day 2 after we brought him home at the recommendation of a friend !

@Pitbull Mommy: my husbAnd gives him one bottle a day

@Mrs. Sketchbook: thanks sooo much for all this info I can't wait to look at it all !!!

@Mrs Green Grass: keeping him upright is a great tip and now that you mention it when I sit him upright he usually settles a bit!

@Kemma: I truly think this is what we were experiencing. It broke my heart to see how relieved and how much better he felt after the big spit up. Hoping it doesn't happen again. !

Thanks to everyone! We just woke up and fed after a 5 hr sleeping stretch and he passed right back out. He is definitely feeling so much better. Hoping he stays happy and content!

My LO had a few nights like this when she was a newborn and it was usually the result of some really stubborn trapped wind. More often than not LO would do a projectile spew and then pass out looking very relieved! As far as I could tell these episodes weren't related to any particular foods although I now know that too much rich food or Reece's Peanut Butter Cups do upset baby.

Reflux is also really common in babies and sometimes medication can help. It also helps to keep baby upright for at least 15 minutes after feeding and even to feed in an upright position (which is very hard for breastfeeding...). I will also raise one end of lo's crib when he gets home (per dr) to get the bed close to a 45 degree angle. (Only raise it from the legs i.e. with phone books, do not do anything inside the bed or under the mattress.)

What color is his poop? If it is not seedy and yellow, but instead green, it may be that the bottle you gave him had too much hindmilk and not enough foremilk. My LO was gassy for a while before I figured this whole thing out. I wrote a post on it: http://www.hellobee.com/2012/12/07/battling-oversupply/

If you are still experiencing engorgement it is possible that is the culprit.

I know it is easy for me to say this, since I never had this specific issue, but I try not to give to much attention to anything that says "cut out X food." According to Kellymom, food sensitivities are fairly uncommon: http://kellymom.com/health/baby-health/food-sensitivity/

Moms all over the world eat all sorts of foods, so I figure most babies adapt to any diet. I feel like warnings about food sensitivities are one of those things that doctors used to tell women to discourage them from nursing.

I think mothers know best when it comes to their children so if you think he has tummy trouble, he probably does. I will say for my own kid, I attributed a lot to gassiness or hunger that might have just been fatigue or general fussiness in my kid (that witching hour is a killer: http://kellymom.com/parenting/parenting-faq/fussybaby/ this link lists common and uncommon reasons for nighttime fussiness). Sometimes kids are really fussy for no reason. In the beginning I tried so hard to burp my baby. I realized later that he never burped during nightime feeds, just went back to sleep. I stopped burping then and haven't looked back!

Why was he getting a bottle if you are breastfeeding him? He could have been full and overfeeding him made him have an upset stomach? I hope you figure it out!! Unhappy babies are heartbreaking :(

My LO did that too - I cut out dairy, coffee, and acidic fruits but didn't see a massive improvement. What helped us was giving LO a daily probiotic (recommended by the midwife) starting around 5 weeks. Her tummy issues went away and I was able to eat dairy and drink coffee again - happy days! I'm not sure how early you can start probiotics but I think they're definitely worth looking into.

It does sound a lot like something related to food. You can wait it out (that is a lot like colic). Or you could try pinpointing it. The most common culprit is dairy followed by soy. Of course, it could be anything. It is so hard watching your baby in pain. Mine cried 12-15 hours straight. Our issue was dairy and soy.

my pedi said it could be bc of babies undeveloped digestive system adn that he would grow out of it. around 8 weeks it completly stopped :)

DD had so much gas and fussiness from 3-6 weeks. Gripe water was our savior during that time (but it never made her spit up). I found out that chili and broccoli were off limits. Her pediatrician said that the baby will typically be bothered by what you ate, 8 hours after you eat.

In the evenings we can tell our newborn (2 weeks) tummy gives him problems. He usually is just a little fussy and won't sleep for a few hours but always finally settles. It hasn't been anything too horrible

Tonight he was fussy and wouldn't settle for almost 4 hrs. During that time he took a bottle very slowly and nursed once. I just gave him some gripe water and 30 seconds later he spit up sooo much. It had been about 45 mins since he nursed.

He instantly calmed down and went to sleep. I'm wondering if something I am eating is causing him discomfort or is this something that just sometimes happens with newborns ??? I just don't want to be causing him pain by something I am eating (dairy??) but have no idea if that's the problem or how to tell ?

I just hate knowing his stomach hurts and not knowing why. Any advice ?
