We just started this challenge on our own last week and we are at about 45 books. It's really helped me to get reading into our busy day, and the girls really enjoy it. Where are you at?

We've been doing the challenge for about 5 weeks and we're at 191 books. I do love that it encourages me to read more everyday to LO!

@pui: there was just a blog post about it!
http://www.hellobee.com/2014/06/24/1000-books-before-kindergarten/
Any book counts, we've read mostly just board books! I know libraries are doing it but I'm just doing it on my own. I have 1-1000 on paper and I write down each book that we read. Once I'm done I'll just put it in the girls memory box or something. I love a good challenge!

@jmarionsmith: Wow great work! Have you been checking books out at the library? We are going to work through a good chunk of ours and then I think we will start checking them out, since obviously we do not have 1000 books!

My husband does most of the reading and he doesn't want to keep track!

@autumnlove: Could he just set the books on a table when he's done reading them and you log them? That's what I do, read throughout the day, set them aside then at night I write them down and put them back. Really though, they are getting read to, that's great!

@Bao: yeah we check out a few every week. but i have to clarify, it's not 191 unique books. there are SEVERAL repeats. LO gets obsessed with certain books.

We've read a few classics to E when he was less mobile. DH read Treasure Island, Tom Sawyer. I read him The Secret Garden, The Wind in the Willows, and several others. Now that he's mobile, it's all board books and bedtime books!
GOLD / wonderful pomegranate / 28905 posts
@jmarionsmith: @Bao: does it have to be 1,000 unique books or can they be repeats?
I kinda love the idea of doing it through the library because it'll force us to take her to the library!
We read 3-4 books every night so this is easily achievable!

@locavore_mama: we repeat several books over and over. and have a few library books thrown in every week. i think the "rules" said you can read the same book over and over and it counts.
hostess / wonderful watermelon / 39513 posts
@Bao: he tried that for a few days but LO moved them so he is over it! He says they read 7-8 books a day....some are board books.
GOLD / wonderful apricot / 22276 posts
@locavore_mama: @jmarionsmith: that I did not know! I was just trying to read different books, for added fun! The ones I repeat I didn't list...but I'm sure once we get up there more there will be repeats. I think we have around 250 books, so there is bound to be repeats!

I use the app on my phone and we are at 190! Repeats are definitely allowed! I am only tracking when I read to LO, but he does get some more from Grandma, Nana, DH, etc. Most of our reading is at bedtime but using the app motivates me to squeeze more books in during the day, especially on weekends!

@cmomma17: what's the name of the app?
I would so lose the paper log!
Does anyone else do it through the library? Wondering how common a built in reward system is.
nectarine / 2132 posts
@Bao: wow, you're not counting repeats and you have that many books already! you're doing awesome!! i would definitely start recording the repeats! also, when i've read a stack of books to lo i lay them out real fast and take a picture with my phone (since it's never far from me) and that way i don't have to keep up with the books and can record them later. just my little tip!
@cmomma17: i also use use the app! and i only count the books i read as well, it's kinda my personal challenge!
GOLD / wonderful apricot / 22276 posts
@locavore_mama: I'm actually going to check tonight if our library does it, interested to know!
@jmarionsmith: It's kind of a challenge for me to, and part of it (for me) is to see how many different books we can read, to keep the interest. I like the idea of taking a pic of the books, I'm stealing that idea!

@locavore_mama: 1000 Books Before Kindergarten You can scan books and create a "library" in the app

@cmomma17: Awesome to hear that there's an app!
I haven't started this yet but we read a TON! It may be cool to do just for fun
GOLD / wonderful apricot / 22276 posts
@Running Elley: we are doing it just for fun :)@cmomma17: I didn't know you could scan books, that's easy!
coconut / 8079 posts
We have read 8 books so far...LO is 2 months but I love books!
@cmomma17: I have tried scanning books with the app but it always causes the app to close on my iPhone. Maybe there's a bug or maybe I'm doing something wrong?

I was a little turned off when I first read this challenge because I thought repeated books didn't count. But after reading that repeats DO count, it's definitely achievable.
Thanks!

As long as repeats are allowed, I think we've already accomplished this at 3.5. We have about 250 children's books and I'm confident they have all been read at least three times each, and others many many many more! I need to work on it for DD though, but she already gets second hand reading through DS.
nectarine / 2132 posts
@jhd: my app does the same thing!! it makes me sad because it would be SO much easier to scan them in...
coconut / 8079 posts
@jmarionsmith: I guess it isn't just me then! It really would be so much easier to scan the books!!
GOLD / wonderful olive / 19030 posts
Sounds like a great idea, however I know I would never keep up with it! I'd do good in the beginning and plus I don't know what she's reading at daycare, and dont' really want them to have to write it down for me.
honeydew / 7811 posts
@jhd: it crashes for me too! Not all the time though. There was an update recently that should have fixed the bug, but it's not 100% yet. I still try scanning first, and then search by title if it won't scan.
GOLD / wonderful apricot / 22276 posts
Any updates? Where is everyone at? We have been super busy so we are at just about 100 I think.
blogger / grapefruit / 4836 posts
I was going to keep track, but then I realized that there are 1825 days between birth and their 5th bday....that's like 1 book every other day to get to 1000. So I figured my goal of reading 20 minutes a day will more than get us there, and it's a lot less logging
coconut / 8079 posts
@Mrs. Lion: I'm sure you will definitely get more than 1000 then. I just like tracking things!
coconut / 8079 posts
We just hit 500! Any updates? Does anyone have any reading goals for the new year?
I just want to keep reading & get back in the habit of going to the library.
