I've had both, but the later one at 11+ weeks with Noah was my only d&c. I just couldn't handle the idea of passing him naturally, and the OB was okay with that.

I know with my procedure, they gave me tablets to induce things and make the whole thing less traumatic (it brought on some contractions before the d&c) and from what I was told, it was minimally invasive in terms of being rough or awful. Recovery wasn't too bad either.

I was almost 10 weeks and miscarried at home 2 days before a scheduled D&C, Not as far along, but my experience if it helps :

It took almost 24 hours for the drugs to work, I was up all night in pain, cramping heavily. I stayed in bed for 3 days and took pain pills and did nothing but cry and recover. I didn't know I would be so very very tired and weak. I made it through because of a dear friend that let me text every ugly awful thought in my head and still loved me.

I think that it *seems* the thing about a D&C is that the awful uncertainty and waiting to miscarry isn't there, which was the absolute worst part of it all. I just mentally couldn't handle what seemed at the time an impersonal medical procedure but I'm not sure I would make the same decision now.

Again, I am so sorry. I don't have the experience to answer this fully but just wanted to share that I found my D&C at 11 weeks to not be as cold or impersonal as I thought. I was pretty much crying the entire time and everyone was so sweet to me and kind. They understood how much I wanted this baby and treated me with more tenderness than I can imagine they would if I were having my appendix removed. Anyway, just wanted to share my experience.

I'm so sorry you have to go through this. I'm the same as a pp in that my d & c experience was as positive it could be, given the circumstances. I had a missed miscarriage, so I was still experiencing all the pregnancy symptoms even though I had miscarried a few weeks earlier. When I found out there was no heartbeat, I could not bear to wait around and wait for my body to catch up. I also had to keep working so I didn't want to miscarry at work. I felt that the d & c was the best for me and I never felt like my baby was being ripped out. it was more healing for me, actually. My doctor was amazing and so kind, so that helped a lot too. So sorry again.

I was 11 weeks when I had my MC (although baby measured 9w5d when we found out - we had heard the heart beat a week before). I really hated the idea of the D&C but I knew I couldn't emotionally handle anything traumatic if I miscarried at home. I'm glad I went for the D&C...(I hate to say glad) but I prepared for it, I obviously went under so I didn't feel anything (just felt like a long nap) and my husband was with me before and after so we talked a lot and he comforted me. I needed a lot of rest the following days but the procedure went okay.

@MaryM: Mary, I am so sorry. I am "glad" to hear that you got to see sweet Frances Ruth and spend some precious moments with her. I can't even imagine how horrible this situation has been but it sounds like you were in God's hand the entire time (as you always are) and that He opened some doors for you to be comforted.
