After three and a half long years waiting, trying, begging my kiddo to potty train he suddenly decided this weekend to surprise us all and just do it. We had one day of needing to tell him when to sit on the potty and he has been solid ever since. With peeing that is...not so much with pooping. The poop he holds. And holds. And holds. After four long days and some extra fiber he asked me for a diaper and when I could see he was distressed I gave him one and he pooped immediately. He then asked me to change him and we went on about our routine. This is what has been happening now for the last week. The other issue is that, despite him being solid and happy about it at home, he has not been the same at school. He has been anxiety ridden when we leave (which he never has been before) and refusing to even pee before he wets himself when he is there. I have an extremely strong willed child who 100% needs to make up his own mind about things before he will do them so I am scared of pushing too hard and messing the whole thing up but at the same time of course I am scared if I let it go it turns into a bad habit. I need help! Any ideas/ techniques/ sage bits of advice?

My lo has a lot of anxiety and always struggled with constipation from the time she started solids. And my younger one who eats the same foods goes a ton so it's definitely not just what they eat! For us it was being VERY patient. And taking it easy on myself, not judging any of us for being behind the norm. I know that's harder with school. We use miralax to keep her going #2. We always had big bribes around for various milestones and it slowly slowly worked. Go at a store; go at school; go #2 on the potty. The last she just decided one day she wanted to, and that was that. It was a long wait but nothing else I tried ever worked! Also try to figure out if there are any specific fears, like needing to cover up auto flushers, that you can address.

@tillma: ugh, we are in a very similar position. My DS isn't quite 3.5, but he is pee trained and wears underwear all day. He also holds his poop, typically until he gets his nighttime pull up. Then he'll ask us to immediately change him. It's been about a month of this, and we've tried all types of incentives/rewards/talking about it. I'm trying to relax about it & totally take the pressure off now. When he does poop I say "oh maybe next time we can try it in the potty" and nothing else. I guess he'll poop in the potty when he's ready??

@mommyslp ugh I hear you! It is so hard to know isn't it? Seeing how he grasped potty training in a matter of hours once he actually made up his mind to do it at least gives me hope it will happen when he is good and ready I guess.

No advice but my daughter was exactly the same! She just 100% would not poop on the potty. Finally I just took the diapers and gave them away and told her it was time to be all potty trained. If she pooped her pants we had to go home or stop doing the fun thing we were doing to get cleaned up. She pooped her pants for like 3 weeks and then I guess she got sick of it. She decided to poop and now she is all trained.
I also promised her once she was done training I would take her to American Girl for tea and buy her a WellieWisher doll... so we are doing that next week.

My DD was pee trained for about 7 months before she would poop on the potty. She also has to make up her own mind to do things, and it just wasn't going to happen until then. She would ask us for a diaper when she had to poop, and it was annoying but she is now totally potty trained and we didn't have any big battles or constipation issues, which we absolutely would have if we'd pushed it before she was ready. We do give her a small glass of diluted pear juice every day to help keep things moving, because I'm still afraid that if she does get constipated she'll want to go back to diapers.
