Every mom tells me that these are a must have, but it seems like a lot of money for a set fairly thin blankets. I know they can be used for swaddling and other purposes. We will have other dedicated swaddles on our registry. Am I missing something?

They are great blankets and they collectively are basically my lo's lovey...but they do rip (my lo bites and pulls on them and I think one might've gotten stuck in the dryer). I have like 12. I'd probably get one set of the more expensive thicker ones and 1 set of the Target ones that are thinner and a bit smaller. So...I love them, but they are in no way essential.

They were the only ones we could get a good swaddle on.

@Mrs Green Grass: Is there a difference in size/quality between the ones from Target and the ones from Amazon or BRU?

Muslin blankets are amazing. A&A, overpriced IMO
For myself, DIY.
As a gift, just buy the pretty ones

We registered for some and I didn't think I'd like them as much as we do! However they aren't a necessity, but they are very nice (especially if you don't have to pay for them!)

Love them because
- they are the perfect size/weight
- they are soft, and only get softer
- they are adorable
- they last
- they have many many many uses (swaddling, sun shade, floor mat, wiping up messes in a pinch, burp cloths, etc).

I agree with everything @hilsy85 said.
I loved th A+A bamboo ones the best, sooo soft. They were perfect for last summer since my DS was born in June. Not sure how helpful they would be in the winter...I didn't like the ones from A+A for Target, not so soft.

While I think they were great for swaddling DD, and they are super soft (we have the bamboo ones) I'm not sure they're a necessity. I can't compare to swaddling with other blankets because we pretty much just used these. But all of the "other" uses (sun shade, blanket, etc) you can do with any blanket.

@mrs. 64: they have two lines at target now, one is slightly smaller (like 3 inches shorter) and one is bigger/just a bit softer that are the "boutique quality". I like both kinds- I don't think the lower end line is "low end" by any means and still very soft. I like them both!

I love them! We tried using them for swaddling but they wouldn't contain our little Houdini. We had a summer baby and they're great because they're so lightweight and breathable. They're also ridiculously soft. All that being said, I still don't consider these a necessity. But if you're going to spend the money definitely go for the bigger ones on Amazon.

I love mine. Got them for stupid cheap (at goodwill...new in package) and I'm actually considering paying full price for more. So soft! They've been so nice to have.
Eta: I also have 4 of the a+a easy swaddles and love them too!

Loved them and used them for a bunch of different things mentioned above

Love them! She can't use a blanket anyway bc she's crazy in her crib so it's nice and light for her to fall asleep with curcled up in her arms. So cute.

I love them but prefer Lulujo (Canadian company) ...they are softer IMO, but I only have the Target A&A which are just OK

i love how big they are. i never used them for swaddling because i didn;t know about them then. but i often used them like a canopy when he was napping in the car seat-stroller travel system. they also fold up small and are easy to take anywhere and can serve as a bf cover, a blanket when it is chilly - they provide good coverage because so big.

Love them! We have about a dozen & use them to death. We also have a different brand & I definitely prefer the a&a's for all the reasons already mentioned.

I have 6 A&A blankets, and while I love them, I think 3 would nabs been enough. I've already packed some away to keep them "new" for next baby. I love them because they're super soft, lightweight, large, cute and versatile. I keep one in my diaper bag always and have used it as stroller sun shade, burp cloth, nursing cover, blanket....the list goes on. I was able to buy both my sets on sale though.

Ditto @hilsy85: @Seattlemom:
We registered for them, I bought a set, and received more than requested (I think we have like 13?) I think we would have been fine with just 1-2 sets. Definitely prefer the bamboo ones. We had some cheaper ones and smaller ones, and those definitely don't get used besides swaddling a teeny tiny newborn. I say the size really matters, but I have seen some other brands with the big size now too. The smaller ones don't cover the car seat or stroller. The cheaper ones don't feel as soft. Not a necessity, but a REALLY nice to have. My go-to shower gift now!

I love them. They were great for our summer baby to be comfy while swaddled in the warmer weather. He now sleeps with a toddler A&A blanket. Same awesome comfort level as the swaddles.

Love love love our A&A swaddle blankets! They're big and stretchy, so they make great swaddle blankets! Plus they're very breathable. We have 8 because Xander has adopted them as his lovey. He loves snuggling up to them! Plus they made great coverups when nursing.

I thought they were pointless before I bought a pack on super sale to see what the fuss was about. I LOVE them. They aren't too thick and bulky, they are large which is great for swaddling, throwing over a car seat, laying out for baby and especially nursing. A now uses hers as lovies.

@mrs. 64: see aprilk's answer. Basically if they are cheaper than average, they are different. But I actually do like have some thinner, some thicker...

I LOVE them! Definitely not a necessity. We didn't end up using them as swaddles. We liked the velcro swaddle me blankets, but I found plenty of uses for them.
cantaloupe / 6669 posts
I am meh on them because we didn't use them for swaddling much. They are awesome for swaddling & I have never seen big, thin, stretchy muslin blankets like those other than A&A. So if you plan on "manually" swaddling they are worth it. We used velcro swaddles so they were nice to have but didn't get a ton of use.
The bamboo ones are super soft & not as good for swaddling but awesome just as a light blanket. They are thin & breathable so I don't worry about them being in the crib with her. I would say those are more worth it as general blankets.
pear / 1599 posts
I love ours, we have the 8 smaller ones (the 4 packs) We swaddled with them, used them as burp cloths, and now they are her blankies/lovies. I love them so much it is my go to gift for expectant friends. I really want to get some of the bamboo ones, I got them for SIL and they are soooo soft.
And they are the only blanket I have ever felt comfortable with in the crib, they are very breathable.

Multipurpose! Folded as a pillow for her to nap in the ergo, a light blanket, a towel for on the go, a makeshift picnic blanket, sunshade, etc.... Never actually used it as a swaddle!

@swurlygurl: cute! great idea!
but i absolutely love our a&a blankets. so soft, versatile, can use them for swaddles, nursing covers, loveys, etc.

I think we were able to get a better swaddle using the A&A blankets than using the SwaddleMe blankets. We used them a lot the first 9 months. Not so much since then. I'm glad we got a set, but I don't think we would have needed more than 1 set.

I love them and all AA products. I think @hilsy85: summed it up best.
My son is 3 and he still uses his. My 4 month old got her own set my son's set is from target and my daughter's is the normal AA line. The normal ones are definitely of higher quality and are larger than the Target ones. I also always give them as a baby shower gift. I've told new moms about them an insisted on buying AA's for them instead of regular receiving blankets (and they all thanked me for it).

I have two, and I think it is not worth it. DS never liked to be swaddled, and if he did, I would have used a velcro swaddle. DS was always cold when he was of a swaddling age, even though it was summer in a warm climate. My travel system's sunshade completely covered DS, so I did not use them for that. I can use it as a burp cloth or to put on the floor, but there are much less expensive options. I don't get the appeal other than to use for swaddling, especially for the price.

I agree they are worth it. While some of the other brands might be decent I will buy the A&A ones because I know exactly what I am going to get and I don't think the price difference is usually enormous. Muslin blankets are just extremely versatile and because they are so light they are super easy to pack.

@mrs. 64: We love them because they are THE most versatile baby item we own.

Now that LO is older we love playing with the blankets. They are great for peek a boo (can easily see and breathe) and playing parachute.
