@newlypregnantlady: Omg, i love gimbap...it's impossible to just have one! The nursing strike could be just temporary - does she like to be in a carrier? With my second i had him in a carrier all the time and it made my day-to-day so much easier. I also wouldn't worry about calories too much, especially if you're nursing. Hugs!!

I made it through the weekend mostly unscathed! I did not have watermelon, cake or ice cream at the birthday party (which, btw, had 38 kids in attendance--I spent a lot of the time asking my DH, "Have you seen our kids anywhere?").

I just got my period today, and I can definitely feel that I've packed on water weight. I couldn't resist weighing myself regardless.

    Total weight loss: 12.6 lbs

This is a huge milestone for me, because I've crossed the threshold in BMI from Obese (31.7) to Overweight (29.7). I think BMI is bullshit (at my starting weight, I don't think anyone who saw me would think I was obese!) but it's the metric the medical community lives by, so it matters.

Only 30 pounds to go to hit my goal weight. And then we'll try getting pregnant again, so the thinness won't last. Ha. At least I can eat whatever I want when I'm pregnant.

@Hypatia: Wow! Congrats on the weight loss!! wahoo

and 38 kids?! How could you even handle that? My daughter is having 5 friends over Sunday for her party and I'm already freaking out about them making a mess of my house. lol

As for me, I am still hovering right at the 2 lb down mark. Which I am ok with, especially considering how bad I was over the holiday weekend. Still hoping to drop 2-3 more and then Id be pretty happy.... of course I should be trying to lose about 15 more.. but eh..... lol

@Ajsmommy: summer is hard! Granted it is easier to grill out and try to eat healthier, but then again, I'd love to have a beer or a mojito in the evening. lol So, that part is hard!

@Ajsmommy: Thanks! The fact that you've maintained without going back up is great. And sometimes you need cheat days to keep your spirits up.

@NorthStar: I know! There were only five families besides us. But we have two kids, whereas a lot of our friends have like ten.

@Hypatia: awesome! Moving from obese to overweight was huge for me! As I went from like 29-27 BMI so much pain went away for me. I didn’t realize how much all the extra weight really was causing me pain (headaches, hip pain, back pain, sore feet, etc.. all went away as I lost weight). It was really amazing!

But I spent a good 15 years being overweight and then obese so I had a long time to get used to the weight. I also really carried my weight well, and I think because obesity has become so common we have forgotten what actual healthy weight people look like! If you can afford it, I’d recommend a DEXA scan because it can give you a fairly accurate number on lean mass, BF%, bone density, and fat distribution. There’s no places near me but I’m still looking for deals. That way you’ll know your actually body fat percentage, which can be a better measure of your health than just BMI. I just found out some universities will do them as part of health studies, so I’m looking into that for cheap options.

@NorthStar: omg my favorite thing is a “mojito” which is just the juice of one lime, crushed mint, sparkling water, and a drop of stevia. You could easily add some light rum for an alcoholic low-cal drink. Although idk if you’re doing a low-carb type thing and idk if alcohol works?

@Ajsmommy: great job! I’m also going slow with weight loss. I’d like to lose 20 more lbs but my main goal is to lose 5-6 by mid August. 11 weeks to lose 6lbs is about what I’ve been losing so far. If I added more cardio I could increase my deficit but I just don’t care enough at this point! Maybe once my baby is STTN, lol! I figure that this isn’t a race, it’s just me relearning how to eat for a healthy weight body. If I want lasting change I’m the kind of person who needs to ease into it.

Ok - I'm done with my 3 crazy weeks and jumping back in!!!

I had a work trip, a family trip and then a girls weekend all fall back to back. It was diet hell. I managed to tough it out and only tick up 1-2lbs from it all (still hoping that keeps peeling off). Now I am ready to get back into it!

I finally got my macro's sorted out - I was using some bad MFP references and mis-calculating things. Specifically I didnt have the right chicken and salmon, I was counting too few fats! I'm also doing good with my running, I spent girls weekend with a fellow mom who took up running after kids...she's my new inspo to stick with it.

I ran 2.5 miles last night. The longest I have run after work - I also ran a different route, outside my norm. Feeling confident!

New goals - lose 10lbs by 10/1 - 5 more my 12/31. Current weight is 170...so I know it can be done. Also - signed up for a 10k in September and a half marathon in Oct, I have no intention of running the whole half - but it keeps me with a goal!

@Mrs D: I think I need new goals too. I had hoped to be down 5 lbs before a wedding that's now 2 weeks away, and I lost 2 and then gained it right back. Womp. So, new goals:

I'd like to be down 7 lbs before my birthday at the start of September. That's 3 months away. So the first step will be not gaining a ton at the wedding, which is 4 days at all-inclusive, and then a work trip that immediately follows...

@Ajsmommy: Great job! Coming off of a weekend is always a crap shoot as you never know if you just screwed up the good eating from the week before!

I didn't eat too horrible this weekend, except for 2 cupcakes and some doritos yesterday at DD's birthday party. I am a week into 80 day obsession and OMG, I don't think my legs and A$$ have ever been this sore. lol. But, I'm going to try and stick with it as I really like the days when I'm using the weights. Cardio, not so much. haha

@NorthStar: Awesome, I love a good sore feeling after a workout. Its a very gratifying pain.

After my complete failure this past month, I'm going to try tracking calories. I leave for my all-inclusive trip next Tuesday, so I won't be doing it long enough to make much of a difference, but I want to set the habit now so I can get going strong when I get back.

I am loving the menu revamp at Zoe’s Kitchen. Got the riced cauliflower bowl today, and it’s the most gratifying 370 calorie meal I’ve ever had. They have an awesome new sauce they put on it. I couldn’t even finish it, so I know I did great on calories for lunch! I picked up one of their packaged items to eat tomorrow.

    @Ajsmommy: Great job!!

I did some cardio last night and it whooped my butt! I wasn't 100% into it, but was sweaty enough afterwards that I had to shower. So, I'll consider that a win. lol. But, I'm not really down any weight. I didn't have time to mealplan this week and prep healthy foods. So, I'm doing my best on that front, but not as great as I would prefer.

@Ajsmommy: lol Well, like I said, I'm not 100% into it and can't do everything, nor all the reps. But, I guess it's better than nothing? We are going to Seattle in mid-July and have family pics in early August, so those are my two motivating factors right now.

@Iced Tea: Ooh, its been a while since I last went to Zoe's and those new bowls look so good! I've always liked it, I don't know why I don't go more often. It's right by my house too.

I've been tracking calories for real this week and am down 1.4 lbs from where I weighed in on Monday. Unfortunately I'm still up 2 lbs from when I joined this thread.

@NorthStar: hmm, I'm not sure where they are generally - the map on their website isn't great. I'm in NC and they've been cropping up all over the place in the last few years.

ETA: a quick google search looks like they're in the southeast + Texas

@JennyPenny: Yeah, I’m really into a Mediterranean style diet right now. I recreated the riced cauliflower bowl at home yesterday, and my husband rated it five stars. It’s seriously good. I think we will try the Moroccan chicken family meal next. BTW, what part of NC are you in? We are headed to Asheville area tomorrow for a conference.

I wonder if they do something different to the rice cauliflower you're talking about...I've made it both from scratch using a cheese grater and bought the frozen races cauliflower, and while they're not the worst thing I've ever eaten, cauliflower rice is...ehh. It tastes like undercooked real rice with a strong broccoli-esque flavor. It's almost an insult to the memory of genuine rice. But maybe there's something I haven't tried to dress it up?

I've been experimenting with keto desserts. I've made lemon meringue cups with truvia instead of sugar, and a no bake cheesecake using cream cheese and sugar free pudding. But my favorite so far is the simplest: sugar free cherry jello with reddi whip on top. I could eat that for breakfast, lunch and dinner.

I've been staying off the scale because I have a habit of freaking out when I've gained, when in reality it's within the margin of error, so to speak. I am going to weigh in Saturday, because that will make it exactly one month since I've started the diet. I'm hoping I break the 180 lbs barrier, since my weight never seemed to want to drop past that when I've dieted in the past. I suspect I'm at least a pound or two away, though (if not more), so I've been really limiting my calories to try to get there in time.

@Iced Tea: I live in Raleigh, in the center of the state, but have visited Asheville many times. I love, love, love it there. I'm sure you'll have a fantastic time. Though, for me, it would be terrible for being on a diet because there is so much good food

Oh, and if you're into mediterranean - I made this a few weeks ago and it was so easy and so delicious. I couldn't find the spice packet she mentioned so I just tossed in some greek spices - garlic, oregano, parsley, and mint I think. https://melaniemakes.com/blog/2017/04/slow-cooker-pulled-pork-gyro-bowls.html

It's been one month since I started, and I'm 16 pounds down, 26.6 more to go!

    Starting weight: 196.6
    Current weight: 180.6

    Starting BMI: 31.7
    Current BMI: 29.1

    Estimated daily calories: 1,145
(I don't count calories but this is what my weight loss app predicts based on the amount I'm losing.)
    Average weekly loss: 3.81 lbs

Daily Carbs: Under 20 net grams (net means carbs minus fiber, so if a food has 6g carbs and 2g fiber, I count it as only 4g)
Fasting: 18/6 (I try to only eat between 4:00 and 10:00 pm; I only succeed at this about 60% of the time)
Exercise: None (too much joint pain)

I want a cheat day so bad, but I know it'd be a slippery slope (I'd tell myself I've already cheated a little, why not a little more?). I am making a bucket list of things I'll eat when a cheat day does roll around. Chinese food, stuffed crust pizza, croissants, pancakes, brownies...you can see why a cheat day would be dangerous for me.

My four year old is obsessed with the fact that I don't eat sweet stuff anymore. One of her favorite games is to give me pretend food while reassuring me it has fake sugar in it, wait until I pretend to eat it, and then exclaim, "Oh, that's REAL sugar!" And then giggle. She also has a habit of coming up to random strangers and letting them know that I'm on a diet. Thanks, kid.

    @Hypatia: Nice update! Mine's a bit depressing...

Since a month ago I'm up 1.4 lbs (womp womp) But I'm still okay with that. My weight was going steadily up before since I stopped nursing and we had a whole lot of special events in the last month so I'm just thankful I'm not up more.

I've been doing Jillian Michaels DVDs and yoga for exercise, plus trying to get 10k steps every day. Last week I started using MFP and saw the first real drop in a while. I do feel like I'm toning well. My tummy and arms are improving I think. I leave Wed morning for 4 days at an all inclusive and then 4 days at a work conference. I'm going to have to try super hard to not undo everything.

  30. NorthStar

    pear / 1881 posts

    @Hypatia: Wow, great job!!!

@JennyPenny: I feel you! I haven't really lost anything in the past two weeks and have worked out 11 of those 14 days. The end of last week was horrible and I'm trying to not undo my mentality of keeping with it. We found out that the daycare the kids would be going back to after Labor Day is closing and I literally cannot find anything in our district. That's a huge issue because DD will be in first grade and needs to be able to take the bus to/from daycare and school (so I can work a full day). Also, no spots for DS (who will be 18 mos at end of summer), so he will need to be somewhere out of town. Which, means dual drop offs/pickups if I ever find a place for DD. Talk about frickin stressful. Hence, the no working out and a margarita on Friday night. whomp whomp

@Hypatia: awesome update! Keep it up!
@JennyPenny: sometimes toning up doesn't allow for dropping lbs... that happened to me way back when I was a gym rat for my wedding.. I hit a certain point and then I actually went up 1-2 lbs but it was bc I was turning my fat into muscle
@NorthStar: wow..talk about stress!! how awful... you're doing great to be working out so much! I bet at some point you'll have a huge drop OR you'll notice a LARGE loss of inches maybe not lbs.....

As for me, I am happy to be maintaining my 4 lbs less... I feel like if I make it through the weekend ok then I might lose .5-1 lb during the week...soo maybe just maybe i'll hit the -5 lbs this week!!! I am hopeful.. plus its so bloody hot out that I swear I must sweat out 3 lbs just going from my car to house/work/daycare

I went out to a normal lunch yesterday but this morning the scale was down another .5 lb!! I love seeing a new 3rd number on that scale!!! I'm down 5 lbs total. I'm going to keep doing what I have been and hope to drop another 5 by end of summer and then i'll be right where I was pre baby. Woohoo!!!

Vacation was brutal. It was with my husband's extended family and we take turns making dinner. I think most of them forgot that green foods are good for you. There was not a salad in sight. Also tons of chips and snacky foods around that are so hard to resist. It's good to be back home and eating all of the vegetables again. Hoping to feel back on track at the end of this week.

@hilary: I'm going on a weekend getaway with my cousins and our kids next weekend and I'm certain it'll be filled with lots of junk/snack food too! O'well... I'll just try to be good leading up to it and get back on track once I get back..but then it'll be the 4th in a few days...... maybe i'll try to up my "walking" for those days to counter the extra calories!!

@hilary: It's hard on vacation, so try to be easy on yourself! Now that you are home, you can be more in control of what goes in your body. We head to Seattle in mid-July and I know I'll be off track with food.

Well, I keep exercising every night, but have had no weight loss. It's so frustrating. I feel like I'm eating mostly healthy, so I'm not sure what is missing. But, I'll keep at it and maybe it will just be a very slow process.

Great to read everyone’s progress! Our whole house has been sick for the last ten days or so, so I fell off the wagon in a major way. Plus it coincided with some crazy teething (my baby is getting like four teeth, two have finally come through but two are still just sitting there), and she’s been doing some major nursing striking. So it’s been a rough few days.

I’ve gained like 5lbs so far, I imagine at least 3-4lbs of that is water weight from eating tons of carbs and just being sick in general.

So my goal got pushed back a little! But I’m ready to get back on the wagon. I’ve had some real bad lingering sinusitis, but I’m so ready to get back to my deficit. I’m so so bloated from all the bread and junk I’ve been eating. Plus moneys really tight for the next six weeks or so, so it’s a good time to cut calories.

Anyone really loving any low cal meals lately (sans dairy if possible Bc I’m majorly lactose intolerant)? I’m feeling like I’m in a real rut!

I see people have been on vacation lately. What’s your vacation strategy for eating well and continuing to exercise? We’ll be going away for 3 weeks this summer and I probably won’t have much access to a gym/pool. I can try to make healthier food choices, but it’s the physical activity part I don’t know about.

I’ve been doing well lately. I’ve been swimming or going on the elliptical 5 days a week for the last 2 weeks. I’ve continued with Momma Strong doing the core workouts. My abdomen is down almost an inch since I started. I don’t think it’s fat loss, but more my post-partum belly/diastasis recti is finally reshaping itself (my youngest is 4!), which I’m super pleased about. Eating well has never been that difficult for me, so I just keep doing what I’m doing. Although, I’m pretty sure I have some sort of sensitivity to quinoa, of all strange things. I had noticed having stomach pains after eating it a few months ago, but wasn’t sure if it was related. I had a quinoa bowl last night and was doubled over in pain in the night, and it’s still lingering this morning.

@JennyPenny: I'm the same--very pleased with visible toning. I haven't been able to see these arm and leg muscles for a year and a half!

@NorthStar: So sorry about the extra stressful surprise.

@newlypregnantlady: We've been sick too. You wouldn't know it was summer, because we've been sick almost constantly since September. It's really wearing on my mental health; I can't cope with being sick so much.

@lamariniere: Usually I just walk a lot on vacation. I might do some squats and lunges if I have down time after the kids go to bed.

I made the mistake of weighing a little while ago. Not much progress. Why did I weigh? I knew better. I need to focus on these awesome new muscles! My arms haven't looked this good in a long while. My thighs are starting to look better too. I'm going to try some smaller shorts this weekend since mine are getting saggy. The weight is definitely not the important factor; I'll be thrilled to move down another pants size.
