Anyone else a bit lax with pregnancy food recommendations?

I ate deli meat & soft serve occasionally, soft cheeses, and a cup of coffee every morning after 1st trimester. I abstained from any alcohol, but that's because DH was very against it. I would've been ok with a small glass of wine here or there, especially at the end!

I am reading Expecting Better, which breaks down a lot of the research on what's safe and what isn't safe and talks about the deli meat and sushi risks, etc. I've personally been sticking mostly to cooked sushi, but after reading that really the risk with sushi is to you and not the baby, same with salmonella, I think I'm going to go back to eating eggs benedict and delicious, delicious salmon rolls. Our birth class is on the same night as half-priced sushi night around the corner!

I've eaten soft serve a few times. What confuses me about that one is by the logic that the ice cream itself isn't dangerous but the machine could have not been cleaned properly... why aren't pregnant women also told to avoid the condiment dispensers at fast-food places, or the extra butter you can get on your popcorn at movie theatres?

I think if we're going to be afraid of some equipment at a restaurant not being cleaned thoroughly, we probably shouldn't eat out at all. I don't see why we should be avoiding ice cream dispensers in particular.

I was kinda blindly following the "rules" until I started "talking" to HBers and realize no a lot of people are that strict! It's my 1st pregnancy though so to be safe I haven't drank alcohol, any coffee (even decaf), minimal green/herbal teas, deli meets, unpasteurized cheese & raw fish/seafood.

Just had some sushi (the raw kind) today, as a matter of fact.

Just had some mayonaise at a restaurant yesterday. I think I'm going to use my own judgement. This restaurant is very reputable so should be fine but i told dh i didnt want to go to a chinese buffet where we dont know how long the food had been left out or how many people had breathed over it.

@Shimmer: I think a lot of the food recommendations are bunk. In the US our cheese and cold cuts are so processed /pasteurized I really feel like they're not too much of a threat. However I avoid processed food even when I'm not PG so I'm not starting now!!

I ate cooked sushi and soft serve. I avoided deli meat at sandwich shops unless they could nuke it for me, but at it at home or if it was in an omelet or something where its cooked. I drank soda and coffee and tea, although I tried to mix it up with decaf when possible. I ate a lot of tuna and shellfish, although not raw.

My ob told me sushi was ok if it was only once a week, and deli meat, soft serve and mostly everrything else was fine to eat. She told me the only things I couldnt do was drink alcohol, smoke, or do drugs.

6 weeks into my second pregnancy and have basically not cared about deli meat and a reasonable amount of caffeine. I need the energy somehow to take care of my toddler!

I forget a lot of the rules, so I'm lax. DH takes them very seriously, however, so when he's around he reminds and encourages.

Speaking of this I heard a bit of an old wives tale that pineapple induces labor... I had a pineapple smoothie today with mango. I'm only 32 weeks. Is this ok to eat at this stage or did you stay away from it?

I've been very lax about restricting my diet. I did cut way back on alcohol, but I let myself have a small drink about every couple weeks in the second and third trimester.

I do try to keep my caffeine intake to 200 mg per day, but I don't stress when I go over.

I don't like deli meat and chicken/tuna salad, so that was a moot point.

I always try to limit predatory fish, so I only eat tuna every few months, so i just stuck with that.

Just this last weekend, I came across some unpasteurized cheese at a farmer's market that I decided not to get, but I eat soft cheese, like feta, all the time.

Everything else, I eat. I've had raw sushi from reputable restaurants, I still eat my steak medium and eggs runny, I eat soft serve, I eat pre-made salads and raw cookie dough.

You can never completely eliminate all risk to your kid, so it's just a matter of figuring out how you want to handle risk. This is what works for me.

I try not to eat cookie/brownie batter (have tasted a few times, whoops) but I do eat soft serve, and queso at restaurants, etc. Don't really eat cold cuts or sushi anyway so I do avoid those.

My OB had paperwork that said to avoid PEANUT BUTTER. Um, no. Sorry!

@paigeface: I believe the old wive's tale is related to pineapple CORE and not the part of the actual pineapple that you'd typically eat.

We're having a bbq this weekend and I am really looking forward to having a hot dog right off the grill!

@kjpugs: I have avoided soft serve this whole time! I am dying for a milkshake from Burger Fi. I think I need to cave and just have one!

@paigeface: Last pregnancy I avoided places like Red Mango but realized post-pregnancy that when I got soft-serve style milkshakes (frosties, etc) I was eating soft serve! Uh, whoops? HAHA. So this time I've just allowed myself! I bet we have so many whoops-type things we don't even know about anyways!

@kjpugs: I really believe that doctors telling women to avoid peanut butter for whatever dumb reason (which has since been disproven) has led to the increase in peanut allergies. right!? I'm a teacher and I have soooo many kids with allergies, it's frustrating for everyone.

@pachamama: 100% - my daughter loves peanut butter and I ate it while pregnant!

Err I didn't know soft serve was a no no either... I've been having DQ blizzards weekly! it's my first pregnancy and I'm probably stricter than many, but I feel like I'm still pretty loose about it. I've done cold cuts and cleary soft serve lol and cheeses. I do cooked sushi although I'm craving raw so badly. I think once I get past 20 weeks I'll be a little more liberal.

@paigeface: I think it's more the pineapple core which contains a lot of bromelain. I don't think a little bit is going to cause harm
