We are a family of four, although the young eat two obviously don't eat much. But I've been thinking about getting a quarter beef. Has anyone ever done it? Did you save money? Spelt it with another family? Was it hard to use up the different cuts?

We buy a half beef every year and love it. It definitely saves us money and it's nice to know the meat is coming from a rancher who takes pride in how his animals are raised - they are very healthy and raised on wonderful pasture. I feel better about this choice for that alone.
I personally have enjoyed learning how to use all the different cuts and by our second year knew which cuts we wouldn't use so I just had them grind them into hamburger.

We buy a quarter grass-fed beef for just DH and I about every 14 months. It's so great to know exactly where it came from and not have to grocery shop for and lug it home.

My grandparents raise beef cows. When we move back closer I'm going to start getting one from them.

For just hubby and I, we buy an 1/8 cow every year. We buy it from DH's uncle, so we know exactly how it's raised and what it's fed. It saves us a ton of money too, for amazing quality meat.

We do 1/4 steer and 1/2 pig. My dad raises them and sells what is left after family takes a pass at it. This last steer was seriously some of the best beef I've ever had! You are in prime country to find someone like my dad to sell you some meat!
We liked knowing what our meat was fed and finished with.

It's in our to do list as soon as we have space for the deep freezer!

We have purchased a 1/4 pig before and it is NOT cheaper than store bought! But we were paying for a heritage breed and knowing that the animal was fed/treated well and not pumped with hormones.
Wish we could do it more often though!

My parents (two adults and sometimes my adult brother) and my sister (two adults and 2 big kids) each get a quarter every year. They LOVE it and they are both very, very frugal. They have totally done the math and say its worth it/saves money. They use every cut - of course they prefer some over others but they always find a way to use it.
Very tasty too!

We have purchased beef for years. I actually found that using up the steak was the hardest for me. We just ordered another quarter which I should pick up this weekend. We've done the math and we think it is cheaper to buy a quarter beef than at the store. It might not be cheaper for ground beef but it is definitely cheaper on the steaks and nicer cuts. It all evens out at the end.

Our 1/4 is currently at the butcher. I'm not sure if it saves us money but I want to know where my meat comes from. You talk to the butcher.... We get rib meat made into burger, burger wrapped in 1lb, 2-3 lb steaks.

We did it just this past year, and given the small amount of beef that we actually eat, we decided we're not purchasing again. It was a lot of ground beef, which is fine, but we're not really ground beef eaters and the other cuts were also just average, nothing to write home about.

@looch: that's my concern. We don't typically eat a ton of red meat. Maybe once or twice a week. I think splitting a 1/4 would be good. Or a 1/2 hog...
It also seems so nice to just always have cuts of meat on hand for dinner!
