The Catskills and the Poconos are both nice. We've rented houses in both areas.

I was once in a similar situation and got a rental apartment for a month in the Hudson Valley. I was in a town called Peekskill, and it was heaven for me. Lots of nature for daily run/hiking breaks (I was right across the river from Bear Mountain), Victorian architecture, an adorable historic downtown (with a soda fountain!), and even a few great restaurants. It's right off the MetroNorth to get back and forth to the city as needed. I found my place on Craigslist, but have also heard good things about airbnb.

@hilsy85: ditto!
It's so beautiful up there. We considered having our wedding in HV.

There are some great, quiet towns along the Delaware River in NJ as well. Check out Frenchtown or Stockton.

I grew up in the Hudson Valley so that's my vote! There are some adorable towns right off the Metro North...

We stayed a few days in new fairfield county, CT. We rented a little cottage on squantz pond it was so peaceful. It's not too remote that you won't see anyone, but just quiet enough to remind you you're not in the hustle and bustle. Driving distance from a couple of good quaint restaurants and very affordable too.

Or all the way out in LI around Norfolk/Montauk!
You can also look into Bear Mountain.... I think they have an Inn there and it's beautiful and quiet! You can even take a hike one day for a break!

@tequiero21: we have a house in Woodstock which is great if you want the option to be near a real town, with shopping restaurants etc. sauger ties and phonecia are also nice (altho I thank phonecia was hit hard by hurricane Irene). Rhinebeck is nice and more upscale.

@snowjewelz: Bear Mountain! Omg...I used to go there ALL the time as a child. Hikes, ice skating, picnics....so many great memories.

@tequiero21: when would he have to go? I wouldn't recommend the Hamptons or the North Fork of Long Island after Memorial Day. Weekends are packed with people around.
ETA - I like the Poconos for peace and quiet.

@hilsy85: Woodstock is where we have stayed the last two times we've been in the Catskills. We loved it. Also there's a bus that goes directly there if you don't drive
I also agree about the Hudson valley. I went to school there and it is easily accessible by metro north.

@tequiero21: I lived in Westchester for many years... I would check out Peekskill, Croton on Hudson for a little closer. Then there's Beacon & Cold Spring for a little further north. There are so many amazing restaurants w/ awesome views along the Hudson... If you decide to go, feel free to wall me!
