Looking for 3-6 month PJ's for my 3.5 month old and wanted input on fleece PJ's (like Carter's Sleep n' Plays) during the winter time? My initial thought is that they may be too warm.

We had a bunch and my son was a hot little sweater and would wake up SCREAMING because he was too hot. I felt so bad! We got rid of all of them and stuck to cotton PJs with cotton sleep sacks.

I guess it depends on where you live and how cool you keep your house. We keep our house in the mid to high 60s and my girls never seemed too hot.
wonderful pomelo / 30692 posts
Totally depends on how warm you keep your house. Logan's room is the warmest in the house, so fleece would be too hot for him!

I live in Boston and our winters can be brutal! Since babies don't sleep with blankets (and my son hated anything that resembled a swaddle), the fleece PJs were necessary.
apricot / 309 posts
We needed them even though we live in California because we turn off our heat at night (it's too loud) and the temperature can dip into the low 60's!

@rachiecakes: Do you layer with the fleece pjs? I was thinking with the 2 piece tight pj sets?
grapefruit / 4988 posts
They were for us but we live in Boston and have an old drafty house with a terrible heating system.

I have a hard time putting LO in fleece. It feels awfully warm, and her room is usually around 70 degrees, so we always (year round) do long sleeve footies or long sleeve/pants cotton PJs+ socks. I tried a fleece set on her last year and it felt like her skin was not cooling down at all after bath time so we ditched it.

For us they were a necessity, the only way to get our boys to sleep through the night. No blankets for us, so they stay warm and don't feel very wet if there are diaper leaks or sweat, even in Arizona. We have a/c set to 70 most of the year and use heat sparingly.
pineapple / 12566 posts
We use them. We live in an old apartment and our kids' rooms are much colder than ours in the winter.
eggplant / 11824 posts
For us, yes. We live in New England and my LO won't stay under blankets. Our heating bills are insane as it is, so I'm definitely not paying a ton extra to keep the bedroom super warm! She wears fleece most of the year actually - she's in fleece more than she's in regular cotton PJ's.

our 4 year old still loves fleece footies and he even runs hot! in CO it gets super cold and we keep our thermostat around 68 degrees so they are definitely helpful

I need them.. I live in NY and while we turn on the heat, it's not like toasty... So DD is def in fleece sleepers/sleep sacks!

The only thing we used them for was walks outside in the winter. We live in NC so it's fairly temperate, and LO definitely runs hot - a regular sleeper + sleep sack was more than enough for actual sleeping.
GOLD / wonderful olive / 19030 posts
I do fleece since LO isn't a fan of the sleep sack, my favorite are the terry cloth ones, a perfect medium between cotton and fleece.

We needed them. We lived in a hundred year old building in Chicago. We still use them in Texas though. It's not a need here, but they're not too warm either.

A little thread jack here...we run our A/C all night. We keep it around 76. Since the air is constantly blowing (clicking on/ off) would that make a difference in terms of fleece vs cotton?
grapefruit / 4584 posts
I'd say yes. Even if you don't NEED NEED them, they're super soft and cosy - I love snuggling a fleece pj'd baby.

We live in Maine....I keep the house at 70 but it can be drafty. As a newborn he wore a onesie, fleece sleeper, and cotton swaddle.....
This winter he'll be 12 months but will wear onesie, fleece jimmies and a sleep sack...he runs pretty normal temperature wise.
wonderful clementine / 24134 posts
Our nursery is right next to the A/C so it gets cold in there. Plus keeping a fan running for SIDS risks, its chilly.
wonderful cherry / 21504 posts
Seems to be a theme here- we are in New England too and needed them. BUT we swaddled or did a sleep sack for her first winter and then they were less necessary (but still used). I think we alternated fleece sleep sack and cotton pjs or fleece pjs and cotton sleep sack. Her room is also the coldest in our condo.
It got harder once we quit the swaddle and sleep sack all together- then fleece was absolutely necessary and we sometimes layered a onesie underneath.

@sapphire: ha, I was going to say that. Oil is expensive. Sorry, DD, learn to be an eskimo like your mom and dad!
wonderful pea / 17279 posts
@T.H.O.U.: so does the A/C clicking on off and blowing air help with SIDS too? It's kind of like a fan, I guess.
wonderful clementine / 24134 posts
@Mrs. Lemon-Lime: I guess it depends on how much it blows and how often it turns on/off. Ive just read you want a fan for constant air circulation.

We live in a part of the Southeast where it can be pretty cold in Jan-Feb. I guess for now I will invest in a few 3-6 mo cotton PJ's and then maybe get a fleece pair once we assess how our winter is going She will be in a sleep sack by then so that will also add some warmth. Thanks, bees!
pomelo / 5607 posts
As has been said, it just depends. My LO runs super cold so I put her in fleece on cooler days already. I don't use them at night though because of SIDS. And we swaddle, so fleece under a swaddle seems crazy hot.
pomegranate / 3392 posts
Our LO lives in them in winter, and sometimes they're still not warm enough! Then again we live in upstate NY, so YMMV.
grapefruit / 4079 posts
We are in the north Midwest. DS hated sleep sacs after he outgrew the swaddle. He loves footed fleece sleepers.
eggplant / 11861 posts
We live in FL she rarley wore fleece and one colder nights wore onsie and pjs
pomegranate / 3411 posts
we used them all the time. still do at almost 3 years old because LO doesn't like to use a blanket still, so i figure the fleece keeps him warm the same way a blanket keeps me warm. At our last place, we used them in the summer too because we had the AC on in his room.
pomelo / 5258 posts
My 2.5 year old requested them over the summer, even on very hot nights with no AC. It can still get chilly at night with no other layers.
nectarine / 2173 posts
@Torchwood: oh yeah, I wouldn't do fleece under a swaddle. But we stopped swaddling at 3.5 months. Over the summer she often slept only in a onesie because it was so hot but now it's cool at night so she definitely needs fleece since she can't use a blanket. It's that or something light plus a sleepsack bus she seems to like just wearing jammies.
@T.H.O.U.: where did you read that a fan reduces SIDS? My understanding has been that there is an increased risk with increased temperatures but that there is no evidence that a fan helps. With that said, we use a fan for white noise and to spin the mobile
grapefruit / 4355 posts
DD wakes up sweaty from just the cotton ones sometimes. She runs super hot and would be miserable in fleece pjs.
pomegranate / 3192 posts
No I've never used them. I hate the way fleece feels on my skin so I imagine it feels like that for DS too. He is a hot sleeper and even though our house is cool he doesn't need them.
wonderful clementine / 24134 posts
@sapphire: just google it there seems to be a lot of reliable sources that recommend it.

pomelo / 5607 posts
@sapphire: I had heard that a fan reduces SIDS risk as well, but I don't know if I was pulling from a reputable source. It's the one thing we don't do and it bothers me a bit.
