DD takes 20 min (sooner if she's REALLY tired) to fall asleep, but most of our car trips now are only ~30 min so she barely naps for like 5-10 min.

@snowjewelz: we used to play her white noise on our iPhones through the speakers, pretty loud. That seemed to help. Also she falls asleep faster on highways than regular roads but that can't always be possible.
(I type this while sitting in the car in my garage with a sleeping baby in the back seat. She fell asleep less than five minutes after we started driving. )

@Foodnerd81: Nicceee! Yeah DD def only falls asleep once we're on a highway at a constant speed.
Hmm I will try the white noise since we do play it for her at home too!

Singing usually helps mine fall asleep, but I spent many hours sitting in my driveway waiting for her to wake up from a nap. (And still do sometimes at 18 months!)

She will only fall asleep in car if it is near nap time and will only only sleep for a few the car is NOT A sleep ques for her like most babes!
She last only 10-15 mins before she wants OUT!

We joke she is a parakeet, I cover her seat with an a&a blanket and she is out quickly. I do make sure it's propped open on the sides so she gets air and I uncover her once she falls asleep. White noise helps too.

we usually have to hit the highway for the kids to get a full (45 min or longer) nap. Local traffic with the starts and stops are sure to wake the kiddos up or to prevent them from falling asleep in the first place (unless they are super tired and if they do fall asleep, naps are usually short). I am resigned to highway driving for a good nap.

Like @Cole, when my dd was a baby we had to pull her car seat shade down in front of her so she couldn't see anything for her to fall asleep

My baby HAAAAATES the car! Once in a while if I put him to sleep, he will stay asleep when I transfer him to carseat (miraculously while I wrestle with buckles!) and rarely he's drifted off if it's near nap time. But nowadays if he's not feeling (at least 80% of the time) he won't even fall asleep on highway! He'll drift off for a second and start screaming again

@FaithFertility: yeah I kept reading about how car rides are great for sleep.. not really! meanwhile I'm the one that wants to conk out lol
@Cole: I find that to be true too. Well, it either helps her relax/calm down with fewer visual distractions and a darker place... OR it makes her mad that there's nothing to look at!
@Cchoi4: one expensive nap haha!
@junebugsmama: wow I can't believe you had successful transfers tho! We never had one!

I agree, he only naps when it is near nap time. I'll make sure the seat is covered with a dark blanket and turn on the radio.

If it's nap time he's out very quickly, within 5 mins. If it's not nap time, it takes a while and I'm in the same predicament as you!
He doesn't really nap well in th stroller either.

@snowjewelz: I should add that she just did NOT like the car when she was tiny. Like she might scream herself into a fitful sleep occasionally but it wasn't the norm. She started resisting it less maybe around 4 or 5 months. Then we had an amazing golden period where I could actually transfer into the house and up the stairs- even from her convertible seat!- for a few months. Sadly that time has passed and I now have to sit in the car with her if I want her to continue the nap. But at least she stays asleep even after I park and turn off the car.
