I think my LO is a lefty and my MIL wants me to correct it and make her a righty. Um?
Has anyone ever discouraged you from using your left hand?

Dh is a lefty. His mom is too so she was glad that he is. My childhood best friend is a lefty and her grandmother used to try to get her to use her right hand when she was little.

I'm a lefty and was REALLY hoping my daughter would be one, too. She uses her left hand A LOT, but I think her right would be dominant.
I, personally, would be really mad if someone ever discouraged me from being left-handed (or my kids for that matter). Yeah, there are a few small struggles to overcome, but really? We don't live in an age where being a lefty is considered "bad" anymore!

I'm a lefty. When I was really little teachers tried to get me to change, but my parents put a stop to that.

I am a lefty, so are both my parents and my sister. No one ever tried to correct me!

I'm a lefty. So is my husband my mom and my sister. It's awesome!!
They tried to correct my mom back in catholic school in the 60s.

I'm a lefty. My grandpa was a lefty who was forced into being a righty and nothing he wrote was ever legible. Don't do it (obviously, you know better).

I think M is a lefty, but it's probably too early to know for sure.
Shame on your MIL for wanting to fix it! It can't be fixed!

I'm a lefty. My grandpa is too but they forced him to use his right hand at school.

@Mrs. Rabbit: what are some of the small struggles? Just curious!
pomegranate / 3845 posts
@autumnlove: sitting in right handed desks, spiral notebooks, always having pen/pencil all over your hand, special scissors, needing a special catchers mitt for softball, struggling with righties trying to demonstrate things like swinging a bat, needing special clubs for golf... First world problems, but annoying!

I'm a lefty as is my dad. My dads teachers changed him To right handed though. I wouldn't try to change it,
It's really something that is innate about her and doesn't need 'correcting'.

@autumnlove: Yup! Ditto to everything @Applesandbananas said

My LO is a lefty and everyone is always so surprised. DH and I are both righties. No one better tell us to change hands, though I believe it was common in the past.

We suspect that both our boys will be lefties. Neither DH or I are lefties. And we definitely don't plan on trying to switch their dominance! If they do end up as lefties, we think it'll be funny that they're left-handed identical twins haha.

DH and I are both lefties. It's crazy to think someone in a first world would even suggest trying to change!

I'm a lefty, except for using scissors I use right handed scissors w/ right hand because there were never any left handed scissors available in school, so I adapted. I can't imagine being forced to change!

Yes. I was 10 and we just started using fountain pen at school...I kept smudging my work so a teacher tried to get me to switch hands!
I hope LO is right handed!

I'd been hoping for a south paw and for a while it was looking promising with C, but he's slowly using his right more. E has been righty from day 1 so far.
My dad and husband are both leftys- my dad was corrected and can do things with both hands, but writes best lefty. S does everything lefty except surgery, he had to learn righty to survive in vet school since nobody could teach him lefty techniques.
On the other hand (YUK YUK!) my grandpa was righty, but lost his arm while blowing things up as a teenager, and learned lefty quite well

@autumnlove: I was a lefty, but my grandma forced me to learn to use my right hand when I was really young. =/ Must be a "that generation" thing... I'm actually glad she taught me to be right-handed because of all the inconveniences that applesandbananas pointed out. I don't remember any negative impact at having to change.
I'm really strong with my left hand/side with certain things even though I never use it for eating or writing. It's like second nature! It's pretty cool to be somewhat ambidextrous I guess!

I'm a lefty but it seems M favors her right hand. My grandfather was also left-handed but his mother forced him to use his right hand instead.

@Applesandbananas: ditto everything you said! I remember having to learn to bat right-handed, gold right-handed, use right-handed scissors, play guitar right-handed... there are a lot more things specially for lefties now though! Notebooks and desks still bother the crap out of me now.
I'm a lefty and super proud of it. I think that is largely because of my grandmother's influence. She was a lefty as well, and punished in school for being one, she said that back in the 40's and 50's it was viewed as demonic to be left-handed and she would have teachers hit her or slap her for using her left-hand. So she taught me how to write properly and be proud of it

I'm pretty sure my daughter is a lefty. She'd sometimes use her right hand when she sees other people using their right hand but eventually switches back because it's probably more comfortable to her. My MIL and my father has commented numerous time about "correcting" her but I've just ignored it. My MIL corrected both my husband and his brother when they were young. Now they both do some things with their left and some with their right.

DH and I are both righties, but DD1 is a lefty, and I am pretty sure DD2 is, too!

I'm a lefty. My grandmother used to try and correct me. She would force me to use my right hand and tell me I was evil if I didn't. Seriously. Lol
Anyway, it didn't work...I'm still a lefty, and as far as I know, no more evil than anyone else
hostess / wonderful watermelon / 39513 posts
@Applesandbananas: Thanks for this! I only knew about lefty scissors!

I'm not, but FIL and my dad both are natural lefty's that were taught to use right handed (writing, sports, etc.)
I think DS might be left handed too.
