I was recently gifted a USB hub, so I can charge multiple items at once. The problem is, I don't ever have that many things to charge at one time, so the gift doesn't get used. The gifter (a family member) asked me if I use it, and I told him honestly not too often. A couple days ago he asked me if I could give it back to him, since he would be able to use it more than me. I was offended at first, but now I think there might not be any point in me keeping the item. However, I think it may have been impolite to directly ask me for it back. What are your thoughts on asking for a gift back?

Depends on how close you are, I think. If my brother or parents did, I wouldn't care. Other than that, it's pretty tacky.

I think that's pretty tacky. I might offer to give it to someone, if I never used it... But Id be annoyed if someone directly asked for it back.

It's definitely weird. If it were my sibling, I might suggest they give it back and I could get them something else.
To be honest, I probably would have said I used it just to avoid any awkwardness. -
My sisters and I have done that with clothes and gifts, where we got a cool gadget we like but then it doesn't translate into their life the same. Better it doesn't collect dust, I'm all about saving money and reducing clutter.

Never! Even if I don't use a gift that much it's still a gift and who knows, I may find use for it in the future. If someone asked for it back I would feel like I HAVE to give it back. I would be annoyed.

I can't imagine asking for a gift back, but I'm practical and hate random junk lying around so I wouldn't be upset at all to return to the giver in this case.

If you were honest enough to say you don't use it, I think it's fair enough for them to inquire about giving it to them. Sounds like a close family member.

I voted never, but I've had it done to me before and reacted the same way as you... but did end up giving the gift back.

In this situation since you were honest about your use of the gift and it sounds like your probably close, I'd say no big deal to ask for it back.
If someone just randomly asked for a gift back I'd think that is rude.

@simplyfelicity: @sapphire: @ALV91711: Part of why I was honest is because the family member came over to my house and asked why it wasn't out on the counter or somewhere being used. So that's when I said the gift was a nice idea, but I don't have that many electronics to charge at one time.

I gave my dad a Kindle for Christmas one year, and really wasn't sure he'd use it. After he opened it, I told him if he found he wasn't using it, I'd buy it off of him or take it back and get him something else. He never did give it back, but I've seen it sitting in his junk drawer in the kitchen. Oh well.

@littlebug: That to me isn't rude, since you're offering to get him something else. In my case, the family member isn't offering to do that. He just wants his gift back, so it would be like I never got anything in the first place.

In the scenario you describe I wouldn't be offended. I would feel guilty not using the gift and be happy to give it to someone who would use it
