Just curious at what age your LO could wipe their own butt after pooping. My LO is very interested in wiping herself after #2 but she is 4 and just doesnt have the coordination to achieve this without making a mess, so I dont allow her.

My 4yo tries to do it and it ends with yuck. So I do it.

@winniebee: yeah my 4 year old is realy all about being independent but she just isnt ready for that step yet

I feel like 4 is the cutoff to work on teaching it though, because 5 means kindergarten and self sufficiency.

@MrsSRS: well LO wont poop outside our home she is pretty regular and only goes at home. she can wipe herself after peeing

LO is 4 and wipes herself after pooping. Unless it's super messy poop, she does ok on her own. I still check each time though; not sure when that will end.
ETA: also, I have to monitor how much TP LO uses with poop because I don't need a clogged toilet! so that's another thing

@yoursilverlining: haha yes LO is the same with toilet paper she take a whole lot even when she pees

My 3yo wants to so I let him try, but I always follow up! I am hoping all the practice will pay off.

@tlcbaby: Is it easier for boys or is it pretty much the same? I wonder if its as worrying if they will wipe front to back. Currently pregnant with a boy so just curious

She's 3.5 and does it herself but can't say it's thorough. I always follow up!

@Mrsbells: Hmm, I'm not sure. I don't have anything to compare it to. But that might make it easier. Sometimes he does seem to get it all. Not to be graphic but maybe it's became boys do have to kinda reach all the way back there and then wipe.

We've been teaching our son since he started potty training at 3. It's definitely more difficult because his arms are not that long! We have him wipe once and then we do the rest. He's going to be 4 soon and we've gotten stricter on it - he has to wipe twice and then we do hand-over-hand for the last one. I expect him to be able to fully wipe by 4, 4.5 at the very latest.

@yoursilverlining: yes all the TP! I have taught my kids to wipe 3 times then flush and repeat as needed!
We taught at age 4 since that is when DCP no longer wipes!

She's 3.5 and can't yet, but will need to be able to by September for kindergarten, so we're practicing!

Thanks everyone. this gives me some perspective. I'll start teaching LO how to reach backwards

DD1 went to a montessori school where they were pretty much left to their own devices re: bathroom (unless they specifically asked for help), so she "learned" to wipe herself right when she was potty-trained at 2.5ish. But we threw away a fair amount of underwear at first I'd say she got the hang of it around...3ish? Even now (4.25) she still asks us to wipe for her fairly often at home, but she doesn't NEED us to.

I still help my DS out and he's about to be 5. But at school he does it himself. Not that well, though...

I think a little over 4.5 I stopped double checking bc she was pretty reliable.

For us it has been a progression. At 3, I did it for him, at 4, I had him do it and helped as necessary. He just turned 5 and I am trying to get him used to doing it himself. He always wants me to watch, but I am weaning him off that too

DH tried to teach our 3.5 year old, but even he gave that up for now after seeing the results

I'm wondering this too. We keep toddler flushable wipes by the toilet since I do his wiping at 4 years old. He doesn't seem to have the coordination for it yet. We'll start practicing from 4 years old on. He only poops at home too.

@Mamaof2: @Mrsbells: ahhhh lol glad I'm not the only one with the TP battle! LO uses literally...literally....1 square to wipe pee but for poop she basically wraps her entire arm in TP - looks like a dang TP cast! Everything in moderation please LO
