Help appreciated...
DH and I are taking a totally unplanned trip. We're flying to ATL now and we fly home on Monday. We have a car rental and OPKs but no other plans. LO is at home with the in laws.
We were thinking of driving up to Charlotte and checking out the whitewater park. We'd like to see the coast but I understand the weather is bad.
I'd love any suggestions!

I'm in Charlotte! Well, south of it.
The whitewater center is really fun! Charlotte is about 4-5 hours from ATL.
Stone mountain is in GA. There's a really cool downtown area in Greenville, SC. Lake Strom Thurmond is in between GA and SC and has some excellent kayaking through the trees.

Do you have LO with you? Charlotte is ok, but if it is just y'all I would go to Asheville! Love that place! Or highlands, brevard, or cashiers NC (mountain towns). Or Smoky Mtns. National Park. Or kayaking the Nantahala, Ocoee, or chattooga (be careful with that last one it is dangerous).
In GA, you could do savannah. Even in the rain there is a lot there to see!

I grew up a couple hours south of Atlanta. Some common trips my friends and family took include Helen GA, Dahlonega GA, Pigeon Forge TN, Cherokee NC, Charleston SC, Myrtle Beach SC, and Savannah GA. Helen and Savannah are my personal favorites. Helen is a mountain town less than two hours north. It would be great for a day trip.

@Dandelion: I also think it would be a little closer than Charlotte possibly?
@Corduroy: you may check and see if there are any water parks near gaitlinburg or pigeon forge too! I think there probably is a big one since that is a winter destination....

@Leialou: Helen was close to where I went to college so we always used to go there to shoot the hooch. Such memories!
We are taking a trip to hot springs NC in October. It is my favorite mountain town, east of Asheville just outside the boundaries of the GSMNP. If laid back hippie is your thing, this is the place. And yes they do have mineral baths!

We drove up to Helen last night. We caught some local music and tried a flight of beer ice cream. This morning we did a zip line tour, hiked to Anna Ruby Falls and then went on to Asheville. Fun trip so far. Thanks for all the tips!

Also Farm Burger is cheap and delicious and ethical, etc. The small chain started in my college town so I feel obliged to promote it! It is downtown, right off pack square.
