We are going on a trip and I'd like to get a couple books on tape. I love fiction- especially scary like Gone Girl, the Good Girl, the Silent Sister, I just finished The Handmaid's Tale. I want to avoid parenting books.

Ooh listen to unbroken! It's soooo good and the narrator is so great. It's very long - but so intriguing. I drive for work and was actually looking forward to each day while I had this book.

@youboots: how was Claire Danes narration of the hamdmaids tale? I want to listen but hesitate because although I like her, not sure about her voice as a narrator!
The Outlander series was fun, good narration. I just finished The Nightingale, but would not recommend. All the light we cannot see was a good listen.
The Martian was also really good.

@Mrs. Pen: good to know! Is it sad though?! I can't do another sad book. I also listen to audiobooks on my commute and it makes it go so fast!

@hellobeeboston: I was going to recommend The Martian too - I loved the audiobook, I thought the reader was so great.

@youboots: yes! That's it!
@hellobeeboston: well, there are definitely hard parts seeing as it's a true story that takes place during WWII. But it actually has a really great ending.

@hellobeeboston: I really loved it. It was my first audiobook in over 5 years. But now it's hard to watch the show because it does not feel right that the lead is not her.

@youboots: did you sign up for Audible? It's cheaper that way. Library also has free audio books

@hellobeeboston: yes I did. I'm going to the library today. Are they just CDs?

If you're looking for something light (and you're a Gilmore Girls fan) I really enjoyed Lauren Graham's memoir "Talking as Fast As I Can". She reads it and she's fantastic.

If you like Trevor Noah (or even if you don't know him), Born a Crime is a really good read. I loved reading the book. I've heard people say the audio book was even better because he's narrating it himself....and his South African accent is sexy to me.
ETA: It's more of a memoir, so definitely not fiction. But entertaining nonetheless!

@hellobeeboston: Curious why you wouldn't recommend The Nightingale? I'm about 3/4 of the way through and really enjoying it!
I always recommend The Thirteenth Tale by Diane Setterfield. It's described as a gothic suspense novel. It's SO good. And anything by Kate Morton.

@IRunForFun: it was very hyped up, so I had REALLY high expectations which never seems to work out.... it was a slow start, then I got into it in the middle with Isabel's storyline, then I really didn't like the end, although there is a nice 'twist' if you can call it that, I won't give away....I couldn't get behind the characters, mainly Vianne, but I thought it was just SO sad in parts, which I get it, really life was probably way more sad. Blah. I wanted to like it more. I really enjoyed "All the Light we cannot see" which I just read recently.

@hellobeeboston: same
@youboots: my library uses the app overdrive- so I can digitally check out the book and hook my phone up in my car to play it. No risk of overdue fees either lol
@SteelerGirl: oh that sounds good! I love Lauren Graham

@Mrs. Pen: unbroken is hands down the best audiobook I've ever listened too. And it was one of the first so I have a high bar now!!
The Martian: very funny and captivating.
Girl on the Train
Don't recommend listening to all the light we cannot see. Too many people to keep straight! Took me 13 hours to start liking it! Yeeps.

@youboots: I check out everything online through the library now. Signed up for audible credits a few years ago but now my library has great options for audiobooks so I stopped audible.

@hellobeeboston: did you read or listen to all the light we cannot see? I think I would have liked it more reading instead of listening.

@birdofafeather: I listened. Still liked it. But I agree that would have been a good one to read.

@birdofafeather: I was reading through all tj light we cannot see and liked it a lot- I didn't get to finish cause I had to return to the library so it's still on my to-read list!
And I agree!! Unbroken was actually my very first audiobook experience and it set the bar sooo high, that no book has been as captivating as that!!
Oh, thought of another one I liked listening to: murder on the orient express

Have you listened to (or read) Dark Places? I may have liked it a little better than Gone Girl!
