We pay our nanny 17/hour. (she's 31 and works 30 hours a week) We pay a high school sitter 10/hour but the responsibilities are very different (expectations lower!)

This is perfect! Haha. I am in a Chicago suburb as well (it's expensive) and I have a hs babysitter coming on Saturday for two kids.

We paid our old college babysitter $12 an hour in a low cost of living area

We pay $10/hour in the suburbs of Seattle for 1 kiddo

I live in a suburb Northern California and I pay $13/hour for our mommy's helper. She's basically babysitting while I do other stuff, but since I am physically present in the house, I quickly prep things like meals for her to feed DS or whatever.

I usually book her on Saturdays where I have to solo parent. I book her for 3 hour increments so the $13/hr ends up being a flat $40 bucks each time she comes over. Generally I have her come between 8am-11am (after breakfast and before lunch) and she takes him for a long trip to the park and wears him out, gets him his morning snack, and then plays with him inside until its time for her to go. After she leaves, I feed DS lunch, clean up and play for a little bit, and then put him down for nap until 3pm. Its a nice way to break up the day.

We live in a medium-expensive small city in central Virginia. Our sitters are usually $10-12/ hour, typically college students that waitress in my husband's restaurant. Usually they have tons of sitting experience and often are in nursing school as well. We expect them to only watch DD and heat up the dinner that I made. If I needed someone to do light cleaning/cooking or be responsible for driving DD, I would offer more.

@Boogs: I know. It's crazy. I tried to negotiate for a lower rate with someone and they never got back to me. We don't have sitters often at all.

@Pumpkin Pie: I live in NorCal (Bay Area) and I pay 15$! I got lots of interest on urban sitter when I posted that price. As a student, I made 15$ for 1, 16$ for 2, 18$ for 3, working for an agency and I saw on their website prices have gone up.

We pay night time sitters $18 -$20 in NYC. I also often leave money for dinner and give extra if it's late for their ride home. It's so much $$$ we have a friend in the neighborhood who charges us less and it's really nice.

We love in a small city and the going rate is $8-10 an hour for a high schooler. We have DH's cousin's daughter and our daycare lady's daughter so both who we trust and the girls are familiar with and both who have their own car (so they can drive to our house and home which is nice!)
