I was asked if I could buy a cake for 40 people - I called BJs and they said 1/2 sheet cakes feeds about 20 people so I would need 2 which means $50 - um, no thanks.
So, I have a 12x18 pan at home - is that a half?
I tried making one before but it came out dry.
So questions are:
Is 1/2 sheet cake enough for 40 people?
Tips for making it myself?

Depends on how big the pieces are that you cut, I've been able to stretch a 1/2 sheet cake to 35-40 people, but that was at a party with lots of other foods so I was able to cut the pieces small.

Do you have a costco? I feel like their sheetcakes aren't nearly that expensive (we used them for our wedding and I think they were closer to $20 for 50 people)

@Mamaof2: I second Costco.
If not - I would advise 2 9x13s...(standard glass rectangle dish). You could do a white cake/chocolate frosting combo; and a chocolate cake/white frosting combo...
12"x16" results in a thin cake - which I think dries out much easier!

@Mamaof2: I think it would be close...with the price of boxed cake/frosting you could do a third to be safe? Or buy some cookies as an aside (not everyone likes cake). If by chance you are in the midwest Meijer and Kroger (and Publix from the South) have great prices on sheet cake!

which should I do? Kids are in grades 1st thru 5th
chocolate on top or toppers on toothpicks?

@Mamaof2: Chocolate...but I am generally afraid of kids + toothpicks...so I avoid that combo at all costs
