I just got a dog treat recipe book, but most of the recipes call for whole wheat flour, which irritates my lab. Wheat isn't good for dogs, anyways. I put in a lot of effort to keep him (and my golden) wheat free. Since they're dogs, flavor doesn't matter too much, but I do need something that binds the biscuits together well. Could oats works just fine?

I don't see why oat flour wouldn't work. Could you grind them up?

@Dandelion: I've done the oat flour before, and that worked great for me! I think the recipe I used had peanut butter in it too, so that was a great binder. I do remember that they were a tad crumbly when I took them out of the oven if I didn't squeeze them into a ball tightly enough (if that makes sense!)

I was going to suggest oats as well. My dad makes some with PB and oats that the dogs go crazy for. I think he might use an egg as a binder, as long as your dogs are egg-tolerant.

@Dandelion: my parents labs eat them to help their coats! They are also wheat intolerant (it gives them ear infections).

@psw27: yeah, he gets ear infections and dry skin from it. He takes allergy medicine, but I'm still careful. I can always tell when someone (inlaws, usually) give him people food, cause he gets the tell tale itch from it.
