We need a new mattress and box spring.
Are we better off looking the weekend after Xmas, or waiting for a Presidents' Day sale?
Can you negotiate mattress prices?

Following!
My husband has been doing TONS of research on mattresses lately and found out that you should never take the posted price on one. He also read that it's best to go to an actual mattress store (not somewhere like Macy's) because the manager has authority to adjust prices with greater ease.

Mattress prices can be negotiated. Regular mattresses have more wiggle room in terms of price than the memory foam mattresses but you can negotiate free delivery, pillows, and extras if a foam mattress is what you want. Any of the holiday weekend sales are usually pretty good but there's no absolute rock bottom sale for mattresses. (My husband's best friend is a mattress salesman).

@LBee: interesting!
Say we fall in love with a set and it's priced at $700. I made that number up. I have no clue what mattresses cost.
How do you negotiate? I don't want extras like pillows. I got all new pillows from Penny's and they are medium slices of heaven. I'll happily share the brand if anyone wants them. HEAVEN I TELL YOU. I bought 6. That's how much heaven they are.

@Mrs. Jump Rope: Go in with a set idea of your budget and ask for a discount (but not in front of other customers). They markup mattresses pretty high but there's no standard amount. Ask for the price that you want and be really nice to the salesman. Generally, they will be more willing to discount if you are nice.

Just be aware that mattresses like the Tempur-pedic are not marked up that much so you can't get much of a discount on those other than free delivery.

@LBee: normally I do not like Macy's at all (they are always messy by me) but we bought our mattress there 4 years ago. This past August, we moved and the movers broke our mattress when they bent it to get it around the corner. Macy's replaced it with the latest model of the brand we hs for FREE with no hassle at all. For customer service alone, I'd buy from them again. Just something to think about...

Anytime is a good time to buy a mattress at Ikea! We got one of their nicest ones; it was still less expensive than an average mattress from other places and has served us very well.
I also love the platform and bed legs we got with it.

Call me crazy but we just got a new mattress from overstock.com and it's amazing. We were nervous but read through all the reviews first and took the plunge after days of agonizing. We did go try out some similar ones locally first, though, so we had an idea of what we wanted. We were also able to compare the spec sheets.

We bought our memory foam mattress from over stock 6 years ago and it was a great mattress. I think I paid $500-600 for it. We needed a bigger bed (king) and so we went shopping. I heard good things about the iComfort bed and mattress. Went to the store and they quoted us at $2,500 for the matress alone! (Yikes!) We wanted to get an adjustable bed (retail another $1500-2000) for DH's acid reflux issues. Went to other stores but we ended up buying our mattress and bed set at a mattress outlet. We saved a ton of money. We got a king sized Serta iComfort (memory foam) with adjustable base and free delivery for $1800 for everything. Yup! We love our bed. The price was so good that my sister considered buying it in Seattle and paying to have it shipped to her home on the east coast. She was unable to find any prices that cheap.
My BIL ended up paying full price for their bed.
I would suggest checking our nearby mattress outlets.

@bluestriped bee: my mom got all new mattresses two years ago and I have never felt something so comfortable in all my life. It wasn't really in our budget at the time, but we RAN to the mattress store to buy one for our bed and they were discontinued. I don't know how in the world you could discontinue a slice heaven.
We got a mattress for Chloe that comes to a close second, so we are almost considering just getting what she has in our size. But, I also want to see what's out there. We might find something even better!
