receiving blankets are small so you can't use them very long. you can always use them as burp cloths or cloth wipes though afterwards. swaddle blankets come in different sizes but i find the bigger the better.
i would have maybe 2-3 receiving blankets, and at least 4 swaddle blankets (the aden and anais come in a 4 pack).
Olive was born in October when it was cold, and we used the aden and anais 4 pack, along with several thicker swaddle blankets my mom bought in korea. we also had 2 thick stroller blankets. i brought home a bunch of the hospital swaddle blankets too which really came in handy.
there were lots of spit-ups and we double swaddled for a long time, so we used a lot of swaddle blankets!

I personally never really used our receiving blankets. We had a few, but my A&A swaddle blankets were a must. We have 8 (some live at grandma's) and used them long after DS was out of the swaddle. They would also make a nice lightweight blanket for an older child, IMO.

@banana: they're supposed to be small so you can use them for babies just after they're born as an extra layer of warmth on the stroller, for people to put on their shoulders before holding baby, as a swaddle blanket when they're really small, etc.

@mrs.bee: Oooh I see. Hmmm. I don't think I have any receiving blankets. I just the Aiden blankets and folded them up.

We used receiving as swaddling for the first few days. Then we stopped swaddling. Lo liked being free and slept well so we didn't keep her swaddled.

We swore by our swaddle, but it had to be tight otherwise my son wouldn't have it! It was a Kiddopotomus bamboo wrap and I bought it on a whim, but it was a life saver. Kiddopotomus became Summer Infant (I think) and the larger size was too loose so we stopped swaddling.
Receiving blankets are good for so many things, like a sun cover on the stroller, plopping LO down on the floor, etc. No more than 3 are really necessary IMO. The cheaper the better so you can donate them when you're done.

I'm by no means an expert since LO isn't here yet, but my friends got me some receiving blankets and they are much smaller than swaddle blankets. Just by looking, I know I'd have problems actually wrapping a baby in them, so I plan on using them for the bassinet, stroller, playpen, and on top of my Leacho podster for extra protection. They're definitely not going to waste.
For actual swaddling, I'm going with A&A blankets, 4 of the muslin ones for the summer and 2 cotton flannel ones (Ultimate Swaddling Blanket) for when the weather cools down.

@mediagirl: also there are swaddle blankets like the aden & anais, and then swaddle blankets with the velcro/wrapping action like the miracle blanket, swaddleme.
i would recommend having at least 2 swaddle blankets with the velcro/wrapping action so you can use one while one is in the wash.

@Mrs. Bee: I have four A+A swaddle blankets and 4 receiving blankets. I was actually just looking at your swaddle guide and think we'll get a miracle blanket and a Halo Sleepsack swaddle to see how those work for us. Did that Halo Sleepsack swaddle end up working well for Olive?

@mediagirl: i actually preferred the swaddleme from kiddopotamus/summer infant. the miracle blanket was really the one she couldn't break out of, but it was so much wrapping!

You see I never had any swaddle blankets, only receiving... but really consider getting some this time around. Sucks that the A&A brand is so pricey (even with baby sales, shipping is expensive)

I had a couple swaddle blankets and about 10 receiving blankets. Receiving blankets are smaller so they're easier to travel with. I had a summer baby so we didn't need any huge heavy blankets.

I ended up receiving a ton of receiving blankets as gifts. I really like the Carter's blankets because they're light and soft. They're too small to use for swaddling, but are great for tummy time, emergency burp cloth, stroller cover, etc. The Aden & Anais blankets are awesome for swaddling, but I ended up mostly using the Halo sleepsacks. LO is a February baby and I found the fleece sleepsacks kept her cozy.
