Are you planning on having your kids join the boy/girl scouts?
It's probably not something we are going to do, mostly because we don't have experience with it. I'm lucky I don't have girls because I'm sitting here enjoying some girl scout cookies at the moment and it would probably be dangerous for me haha!

DH and I are very pro Boy/Girl Scouts. We were both in them through high school, and I worked for a Girl Scout council for a few years during and after college. We both have great memories from our scouting experiences. We definitely plan on putting our kids in scouts.

Girl Scouts, definitely. I was one for years and liked it a lot. Boy Scouts are a maybe. Historically they have been pretty discriminatory to gays so I'm not huge on them. In the last year or so they have become more inclusive, so if DS asks I will review their stances and see how we feel at the time.

I don't have any sons, but they would not be allowed to participate in the Boy Scouts until they've changed their regressive ways. Girls scouts, absolutely. I keep meaning to look into that, actually.

Maybe, if she really wants to. I was in Girl Scouts for a few years as a kid but HATED selling cookies. I wouldn't want to make DD do that if she doesn't want to, nor do I have any interest in being the mom who gets to sit with the kids outside the grocery store for 3 hours so they can hawk the cookies (full disclosure, I don't like any of the cookies anyway and find the ingredient list appalling, so I have a bias to start with). But aside from that, I know they do lots of good work and learn useful things -- more so now than when I was a kid, I think-- so we'll see.

I was never in girl scouts so I don't have any perspective on what it would be like. My DH is an Eagle Scout so I could see him encouraging our boys to do it. For DH it has been nothing but a positive - people are always super impressed to see Eagle Scout on his resume!

@psw27: an Eagle Scout IS impressive!!
My DS is in his 2nd year of scouts and its been amazing for him. He isn't into sports so Scouts has really helped him come out of his shell!

@Mamaof2: I legit know nothing about it. My dad is 1 step away from Eagle Scout and always laments not finishing. My FIL is an Eagle Scout too. But people always seem to think its pretty awesome! It sounds like it was a LOT of work.

We will encourage DD to join girl scouts. If we had a son, we would most likely not want him doing boy scouts. Too much of their recent history contradicts our beliefs and values.

I was in Campfire which is bigger here in the PNW than in some places. I like that groups are made of both boys and girls and are more inclusive than the scouting group. I also went to Campfire summer camp and want my LOs to go to the same local camp if possible.

I had amazing opportunities in Girl Scouts and earned the Gold Award. I hope DD is interested and that I can find a way to have her participate. I worry about my WOH schedule conflicting too much. I also worry that I'll volunteer to lead her troop and have no actual time to do so.
Like PPs I don't think I'd put DS in Boy Scouts. My brother was an Eagle Scout. He is (and was) an atheist and there were openly gay Scouts in his troop. I know individual groups can feel different than national policy but I can't support them in their current form.
