So another post got me thinking about this. The post regarding your first thought when you saw your LO. Our Lo was breech and her head had been stuck in my ribs for weeks. When they first took her out my husband saw her immidiately and got worried something was wrong because she had a pretty significant "dent" in her head. It seems as though her shoulder was shoved into the base of her head behind her ear. You can't notice unless it's pointed out to you, but as new parents we were so worried. She is now 11 weeks old and it has begun to fill out and looks 98% better (no one would notice at this point). Our pediatrician is still monitoring it, and if it hadn't filled out the way it has she was going to refer us to a neurocranial specialist to discuss wearing a helmet. Did anyone else have a breech baby with head shape issues? What did you do? How did everything turn out?

My son had head shape issues stemming from his transverse position and being in the NICU for so long. He wore a helmet for 2 months. The change in shape is remarkable! I blogged about it (you can find the link in my profile). As for the helmet itself, babies don't really notice one bit. And the earlier you can have the treatment the better because the baby won't have to wear it as long.

@sandsandmore: Thanks for the reply. I remember feeling so worried when she was first born, I can only imagine what your experience is like. My friend just found out she will have to get a helmet for her daughter. I'm glad to hear how beneficial they are.

The helmets are really no big deal. I personally think they're precious, especially once you decorate them! Some doctors are completely against the helmets because they don't provide 'development support' -- they're truly only cosmetic. But it's tough being a kid, I don't want to add a crooked head to the challenges!

My niece had a very difficult delivery and was in the birth canal for a VERY long time, she ended up needing a helmet to correct the shape of her head. She wore it for about 6 months, and didn't really even notice/care about it all that much. My SIL had it made with a really pretty floral design, and now her head is perfectly round. I agree w/ @sandsandmore, there are enough things out there for a little one (or teenager) to worry about, so for a few months when you're a baby, wearing a helmet to keep you head round is no big deal and worth it in the long run.
