I hesitated to post anything about this since I'm still processing it...and then kept going back on making this gold, but figured I would post it in the general forum to hopefully get more responses.

Did you have an ultrasound that showed a "calcification" on your baby's heart?

We had our anatomy scan yesterday at 18w3d and the baby looked awesome! I see a perinatologist (high risk doctor) because of some issues in my last pregnancy and the ultrasound (a level 2) was done by a special tech and also by the doctor himself.

Everything looked wonderful except one small thing - our baby has a small calcification (more scientifically, an echoic focus) on his heart. It just shows up as a small white spot in the heart chamber on the ultrasound. Apparently, taken alone it means nothing. However, it can be a soft marker for downs syndrome if found with other downs markers. Could also be a sign of a heart defect.

The good news is that they found no other downs markers found at this ultrasound. And we did first tri blood work and had the NT scan (and the baby's nuchal fold was great - 1.5 which is well below the threshold for downs). I don't yet have an analysis of what the baby's risk of downs is -- I had second trimester blood drawn and it got screwed up by my OB (not this perinatologist). So I had to have it redone yesterday and we won't know our odds of downs until next week. The test that we are doing is Series Sequential Testing, which is over 99% accurate.

The perinatologist told me that he was not concerned about any of this so I am trying not to worry, but it is hard. He said he got a great look at this kiddo and that he seemed very healthy - he was able to look at heart function and all of the anatomy and saw no (other) sign of a heart defect or downs. He said he thought my blood work would come back showing that this baby is at very low risk for downs. We have a follow up appt in about 3 weeks and another ultrasound then.

So, I'm wondering if anyone has experiences with seeing a calcification on their baby's heart....good and bad. We will love our son no matter what, but I'm anxious to find out more and hopefully put this issue to rest.
