Let's say you know someone that has never seen any of the 6 Star Wars movies.
Would you recommend watching in order of movie release, or story order?

My DH says to watch it in Star Wars Machete order. Whatever that means. It's supposedly the proper order for watching them. There's a blog post about it with more specific details, but the gist is:
#4 (the first original one)
#5
#2
#3
#6
And never watch #1, lol. Nobody ever needs to see #1,ever. Lol

I say order of release since there was a rhyme and reason it was released that way!

I'd say watch 4,5,6 (the originals) and just skip 1,2,3. They don't have Han Solo, so clearly they're not important In fairness, I haven't actually seen 3 and I don't know if I've seen all of 2 (because of how horrible 1 was)

Watch the original trilogy.
The new ones are heretical. They aren't just poor quality (though it can't be understated how bad they are). They introduce a lot of nonsensical things that contradict the earlier ones.

IF you feel like you need to watch all of the movies, the Machete order is absolutely the way you need to do it, as @abbydabbydoodlebug: said.
The explanation of the Machete Order is about halfway down, it's worth a read if you're interested in watching all 6 movies:

Thanks everyone! Machete order it is!
I am aware of the big spoilers. I've read enough Entertainment Weekly lately.

I know I'm in the minority, but I like the new trilogy! Of course they aren't as good as the originals. It probably helps that I was 10 when Episode 1 came out, so I could enjoy it without being critical. I hope I can do that with the new movie. Episode 1 has Liam Neeson as a Jedi, Darth Maul, and podracing! If your son is going to watch them he might like that one.
ETA: I've never heard of machete order. I might have to try to watch them that way!

Not a huge star wars fan, we're more trekkies over here, but I say show them your absolute favourite first, then go for 1 to 6 order.

@Oxana: completely agree.
The only real Star Wars are the original ones! Watched in order of release!

I think it depends on whether or not the viewer knows who is father and son. If you know that, then sure you can watch it in order of the episodes. But if you don't, then I would watch 4-5-6 first! The reveal of Luke's father comes in episode 5, and it's mindblowing for a kid if they don't know about it!
As an aside, I'm a big Original Trilogy fan and didn't really like the prequels when they came out. But then I saw the Clone Wars animated series and it really made me appreciate the prequels soooo much more! It redeems them by filling in a lot of the plot holes.
ETA: I just read about Machete order, and it sounds interesting! I agree that Episode 1 is kind of backstory and can be safely skipped. I wouldn't start off with Episode 1, unless you're young because I do think that the story works well for younger kids (all my kids' friends love it).

@Mrs. Pickle: I think my son is too young, he's just turning 5, it's more for my husband and I, lol.
@mrbee: I know the major spoilers, so that's why I was wondering if order mattered. I feel like my son is still too young and he gets easily spooked.

Order of release. Which I will do before watching the new installment.

@looch: I let my son see most of the movies, except for epusode 3! That one is really violent, and kinda disturbing too!!

I prefer 4,5,1,2,3,6. I don't like skipping any of them. Also, with the Jar Jar theory that's floating around now, 1 is a LOT more interesting.

@Torchwood: my mind is blown!! That explains the weird title, The Phantom Menace... I never understood why they called it that!

@Miss Ariel: Ugh I can't believe he did that!! I felt like the movie doesn't really explain why he was willing to murder children... when that scene happened, I was completely shocked!
The part that gets to me the most is the disturbing relationship between Anakin and Padme. It has so many danger signs of an abusive relationship... and then there's the tragic ending. Plus their relationship looks even worse in the animated Clone Wars series, ugh. And this is the former Queen of Naboo and a Senator! I guess abusive relationships can happen to anyone, but I was surprised that no one called out Anakin on it. Maybe because the relationship was a big secret? Still though, I feel like Obi-Wan could've said something about it in their final battle.
Anyway watching Anakin and Padme's relationship devolve ruins a lot of episode 3 for me!

@Torchwood: I'm a believer! Thanks for sharing the link!!
