My patents have a pay phone in their upstairs computer room. So probably less than a year ago. It's just hooked to the house phone line though, you don't have to pay.

Yes. I was in Oakland, CA in a horrible neighborhood and lost... I was a late adopter of cell phone technology. I stopped at this horrible phone and picked it up only to realize that someone had peed on it and that it wasn't attached by the cord to the phone box. I bought a cell phone shortly thereafter. This was around 2000.

I think the last time was around January 2003. I was interning in the US and I didn't have a cell phone. I lost my roommate in the mall and was trying to get ahold of her at our shared place since I didn't want to abandon her at the mall! So I used a mall pay phone to call our place. Turns out she thought I had abandoned her and left

It was probably 2005 when I visited the US for the first time on my own and my mobile was super expensive to use, so I used payphones to call collect.

I think it was in high school. I missed the bus and needed a ride home. No one was home for almost an hour and a half!

@Mrs. Jacks: I didn't get a cell phone until 2007 (when I got married). You're not alone on the late to cell-phones train.

Ha last year! I left my cell at my parents house and got on the train back to the city. Once I got there, I had to go hunting for a pay phone, had to buy something to get change, and then when I made the call, it cut me off at 1 minute because apparently that's all 50 cents buys you! I had to call 3 times!
We don't realize how good we have it now.

@Mrs. Jacks: Ewww!
@anonysquire: Your parents have one in their house? That's pretty cool!
@Pirouette: Reading your post reminded me of my last pay phone use. Can't remember where or when it was but I do remember scrambling to find change before it cut me off.

a looong time ago. But what I do remember about it was that I was at a hockey game in high school, and I called collect (even though I had quarters) and when it said "please state your name" I said really quickly "Hi dad its Kelly Im done can you come get me? Love you bye!" so he never got charged lol. except I had to say it so fast it was like "HidaditsKellyImdonecanyoucomegetme?Loveyoubye!" lol

@bluestriped bee: i was so frazzled a cop came over and offered me a quarter! i was like thanks, but that's not enough to make a pay phone call these days. he was stunned, haha

I think I was 11. I was out with my aunt and she got sick. I called my mom and she picked us up and took us to the hospital. That was the only time I ever used one. I think my aunt had food poisoning.

I think it was about 8 years ago when I thought I could go without a cell phone... I lasted about 2 weeks and then went running for the cell provider... lol

The last time was probably back in high school when I had to call my parents to pick me up from school. That was in 2003, which would be 10 years ago. Wow.

It was probably when I was in high school and on a field trip before I got my cell phone.

There are still pay phones in my hometown, but I don't think I've used one since I was in college 7 years ago.

I remember using one in like 9th grade. That was like 13 years ago.

@MrsH: I saw one at the grocery store last night. That's what reminded me. I don't know the last time I noticed one before.

I can't remember! I also used them in middle school/high school to have parents come pick me up, but now I wouldn't even know where to find one if I needed one!

I think it was 9th grade. I used the one we had at school a lot to call my mom to come pick me up. I then got a cell phone in 10th grade.

High school! We had a bunch in the cafeteria, and before I got my cell phone in like 10th grade I had to use them a lot to get my parents to pick me up after practice lol.

Yeah, it was probably 2000 or so - I was at a pool hall with my cousin and we went outside to use the payphone to call someone, I don't remember who. But I was wearing a blue belt and some guys walking by were cackling at me "Crip!" - because of the blue. I thought I was going to get shot I don't think I ever wore that belt again. (Oh and it was nighttime and we were in Phoenix...so two young girls in a not that great neighborhood...yeah).

last time I remember is in jr. high I called my parents collect and when it said "say your name" I would say "come pick me up" and they would deny the charges and come pick me up at the school! haha so cheap.

Holy crap...I honestly can't. Many many years.
ETA: Oooh, I remember now. In 2009 we were in Rome & had to call our bank in the US b/c our debit card had been cut off for "suspicious charges." We'd forgotten to tell them we'd be out of the country. Standing on the side of a busy street barely able to hear was good times.
