For those of you who had your sons circumcisions done while in the hospital, were they covered by insurance? We just got a bill for $650 for my 6 week olds and I'm shocked!!

This didn't apply for us but I looked into the cost and it was $250. Our insurance said they don't cover it since it's a cosmetic procedure.

Our insurance covered it. We did get a bill for it but it was sent in error by the hospital and I could ignore it. I believe it was $350.

Our insurance covered it but they accidentally billed mine and LO1 was under DH's insurance.

@autumnleaves: I'm thinking this is an error and they billed it under my sons name before he was added to insurance. I'm going to call and hopefully straighten it out. $650 seems steep and I have very good insurance.

My OB just sent me a packet of their estimated costs, and if not covered by insurance they charge $500.

@sarac: Given that the AAP and CDC both recommend it (or at least say "the benefits outweigh the risks") I don't think it's unreasonable for someone to think insurance would cover. That being said, I have no idea whether my insurance does or not...

@MrsSCB: to be fair, there are plenty of treatments and procedures doctors recommend/prescribe that insurance doesn't cover. Routine infant Circumcision for the majority of people is considered an elective procedure, so I think it's reasonable to assume it wouldn't be covered.
A lot of times, it may be covered in one setting but not another (eg at the hospital before discharge, but not at the peds office after, etc.)

@catomd00: Oh I agree, and on the flip side, they also do cover things that could probably be considered unnecessary. All insurance is different, I just don't think it would be odd for someone to think a circumcision would be covered (in the u.s. anyway!) ETA: and definitely at least worth double-checking before paying the full bill.

I never even thought about this. I would have just assumed it was covered. So interesting
