Staying in a hotel, would you be comfortable having your young kids sleep in one room, while you slept in a connecting room (as in, there is a door connecting the rooms, no key card needed to get between them)?
We have an upcoming wedding and DH has tons of hotel points that we never use, and the rooms look really small, so considering this option.

I'd do it to keep the kids separate - but have one parent in each room come bed time.

@DesertDreams88: yes usually you can turn the deadbolt so you can’t close the doors all the way even if you slam it. Plus I’d probably bring a finger pinch guard that i could put up out of their reach.

Yes. As long as the door between is propped open it’s basically like having a suite. I am a little cray though, so I would probably sleep with them just because there would be a door to the hall in their room and let my husband have the other room to himself.

My family did this when I was a kid. You can use those metal door latches on every hotel door to keep them in and others out. How old are your kids?

Yes, we’ve done this. What we did was put my son in one room and leave it cracked until we also went to bed. Then we left the door wide open.
We also dead bolted and sort of barricaded the door that leads to the hallway with luggage and stuff and permanently kept the “do not disturb” sign on it.
Works very well for us.

I wouldn't want my kid(s) in a separate room. So I would not close the door; even with the deadbolt turned open. I'd prefer a suite if you have that option.

We've done it twice recently. In one room we just left the door open. In the other, it was a little bungalow with two separate, non-connecting rooms, so we had to go outside to enter the kid's room. It was also in the countryside, in a gated resort, so I felt completely fine with the security measures.

@Shantuck: 4.5 and 2– the 2 year old will be in the crib.
That’s a good point people made about deadboltinf their door to the hall. I do it at night anyway but I would do it more in their room.

I would definitely do it. I’d do all the locks on their door locked all the time and push a chair in front of the door at night.

Absolutely, wouldn't think twice. I'd prop the doors open once I was also going to sleep but I think this is a great option.

Ok glad I’m not off base! There are no suites available so this seems like a good option!

Yes and I would put this on their exterior door. We always travel with it. Those metal swing locks at hotels are junk

I totally would and just keep the door half open! Then it's really just a bigger suite!

I would and just keep the door open or pack my monitor so I can see them. I know, probably weird but I feel more comfortable being able to check them.

Oh yeah, we always travel with our baby monitors. I pack a camera for each kid and a pack of velcro Command strips and just mount them to the walls.

I’d absolutely use adjoining rooms and just make sure their door is bolted and the adjoining door is open while you’re sleeping. Also, maybe unplug the phone on their side. My kids are always dialing someone when we’re in a hotel!

@mrsbookworm: Oh God, we completely disassemble the second room. We stayed in a 2 bedroom suite this past weekend and I took the lamps, phones, alarm clocks, remote controls, binders, - everything out of the room and hid them. I even turned the dressers around so they weren't opening and shutting them all day. If the TV's not bolted, I put it in the closet. All the towels, toiletries, toilet paper, wastebaskets - gone.
We use Door Monkeys (on Amazon) at home and we just carried a few with us whenever we travel to lock/prop the doors in our hotel rooms open.
