Our ninja bit the dust, so I am in the market for a new blender. I should say, I HATE cleaning blenders and would much rather eat chunky soup than blend things in batches. Anyway, I was doing some research and came across immersion blenders and am intrigued. Would they be a pretty close replacement for a stand blender?
I am looking at this one but am open to suggestions.

Well, I can only speak for my stick blender since I NEVER use a really blender...but I LOVE MY STICK BLENDER. Easily the most used appliance (small) in my household.

I love my stick but still use my vitamix. I don't find them to be interchangable.

No, I don't find them interchangeable. A stick blender is great for blending soups though!
I use my regular blender for anything that needs to really be totally puréed/smooth.

@Coral: smoothies and soups. I will sometimes use the stick for soups big it doesn't blend as smoothly. I use the stick primarily for sauces and baby food, things where I'm looking to keep some texture.

I use my blender for smoothies and my stick blender for soups and things that need to be puréed- I love that it is stainless steel and can go into hot foods safely.
If I had to choose between the two then I would choose an immersion blender only and you could then make smoothies in tall jugs or bowls if you had to. I just have a fairly cheap glass Hamilton beach blender and a kitchen aid immersion blender. Total $160 ish for both Canadian. Neither are fancy, but work great for me and what I use the for. They are used frequently.

It depends what you want it for. If it's mostly for pureeing soup then yes, an immersion blender will work. FYI a pretty easy way to clean a blender is to squeeze a bit of dish soap in, add some water, and run it for a minute.

I think for your purposes, I'd definitely go with an immersion blender. It's all I used for soups and making baby food. Easy to clean and easy to store.

@Coral: this is an arguement I have with my husband. He bought me an immersion blender but I don't use it much, since usually I blend smoothies or nut milk. My regular blender sucks too!

I use my immersion blender (cuisinart) for everything. I even use it for smoothies and it blends baby greens nicely.

I use both for different things, but the blender I mostly use just for smoothies. I love my stick one. I have one that has the immersion blender attachment, plus a mini chopper (like mini food processor) -and a whisk attachment, perfect for whipped cream. Worth the cabinet space for sure.

We have and use both. If I had to choose one, it would be the immersion blender. We use the same trick as @erinbaderin: for cleaning our regular blender. It works awesome!!

I think so. I rarely use our blender- like would not need it. The immersion blender is great for soup.

Yes. We don't use our blender at all, EVER. I always use the immersion blender or the food processor.

We pretty much only use our immersion blender. I don't know the last time I used our regular one. We're more likely to need a food processor over the regular blender.

I will join the chorus of people who mostly use the regular blender for smoothies. During warmer months I make green smoothies nearly every day, so I find it pretty indispensable (and also awesome for making gazpacho, another summer staple!) but if I didn't make those things I probably wouldn't use it much.

We only use our immersion blender, since our combo blender/food processor bit the dust. It is super convenient, but I do miss having a big blender.
PSA- immersion blenders are dangerous. My SIL had to get several stitches in her finger due to an accident with an immersion blender.

My immersion blender came with a little beaker that could be added to make it behave more like a traditional blender. I've used it (to make smoothies) maybe 2-3 times total in the last 5 years. But I use the immersion blender all the time.

I love my immersion blender for soups. I really only use the regular blender for smoothies.

When our stand mixer died we got an immersion blender and haven't missed the stand. But we don't do smoothies. We do soups, sauces, and dips mostly. We also got one that converts to a 1 cup food pro that we use for chopping things.

We use a blender every day (smoothies, nut milks, and cashew cream), so no. An immersion blender would only replace it if all we used it for was soups.

I never use my stand blender (I am more a cuisinart person) but am OBSESESSED with my immersion blender. Great for soups and sauces, and for making baby food. It's one of my top 5 appliances.
