I always loved the $1 crayons from the one spot in target. They are sturdy and thicker than normal crayola so easier to hold. Plus, they are cheap so if she snaps them I am not concerned! We have had sesame street, princesses, Minnie mouse, and spring themed ones.

I always thought the crayola pip squeaks (short thin markers) were a waste of money but my older toddler really does hold them better because they are shorter.

Crayola makes toddler markers. They are regular size but the tips are low and round so kids can't crush them with too much pressure or dot-dot-dot style coloring.

Washable crayola markers! She's never had a preference between the fatter ones vs. The skinnier ones. I like them for crayons too because the colors are richer and better than some super cheapie crayons

I like the jumbo Crayola crayons - they're big enough that they don't snap in half as easily, and it's easy for her to pick up.

Washable Crayolas. I started off with the big crayons and pipsqueak markers.

I got C some markers from Early Learning Center when she was about 18 months. They had small, rounded tips that were meant to be "press proof". They were good.

We've got the Tomy Aquadoodle. Its a special mat that changes colour when its wet. It comes with a pen that you fill with water - no mess and no problem if the LO sucks the pen.

@illumina: I haven't tried these but have heard good things about them. I want to get some for my LO (16mo). They're chunky, so easier for little hands to hold.

@illumina: Yeah, its great. E prefers to suck the water out of the pen rather than draw but I enjoy drawing on it!!!!

We have crayons washables that are triangle shape. To help teach them how to grip properly.
He has no problem with them but I've broken a couple and the tips break easily.

My LO breaks crayons left and right, so the fatter ones are better for her.
I also recommend a Magic Eraser. We turned our backs for 5 seconds last night and she drew ALL OVER 2 large walls. Thank God for the Magic Eraser.

I am avoiding crayons because she is still putting EVERYTHING in her mouth & I know she would love to eat them up!
We are going to try some regular Crayola washable markers for her thank you notes soon. Nervous but we'll see!
Have you tried edible finger paints?

The thing that worked best for us (I wasn't big on keeping art projects) was to just put some finger paint on the tray of my son's high chair and let him go to town that way. I am leery of giving kids under the age of 4 writing utensils of any kind, it could be the beginning of poor habits in holding pencils that needs to be undone later.
