do you really need a crib if you get a pack and play/playard? i'm assuming pack and plays/playards are nice because they're portable.... but if they can sleep in it, why do we need cribs?

My crib mattress is a lot nicer than the pack and play, and DS sleeps on it a lot longer, I think.

I read somewhere that cribs are there to show off for your grandparents.
With the addition of things like pack-n-plays, I really wonder if we NEED a crib or if we could just deal with a pack-n-play for the baby to sleep in.

The pack and play doesn't really have a mattress. It is this really flimsy, pad kind of thing. The babies will probably outgrow the pack and play sooner than a crib. And certain cribs can convert into a toddler bed so you can use it for many years.

Not at first, but as a child get older, they need similar support as an adult for their growing bones, just like adults. A pack n' play does not support the spine or neck in a similar fashion to a mattress and can cause damage to a small child's bones.

^ This. My son sleeps so much better on a crib mattress instead of a flimsy PNP pad. You can probably get away with it while they're very small, but eventually, I would transition to a crib.

I agree with the others, my pack n play is pretty tiny for my 18 lb 4 month old. She's going to outgrow it way sooner than I thought. She moves around a lot when she sleeps and it worries me when she's in the tiny pack n play (which we only use traveling).

we bought a crib instead of a pack and play because our crib converts into a bed so its going to last much longer than a pack and play would. it also looks nicer IMO than a pack and play

We used the pack'n'play for LO's first 3 months when she slept in our room. Then we kicked her out into her own room into her crib. The pack'n'play is still in our room - we thought we'd keep it in there just in case but eventually we'll probably leave it at my mom's house.

We got lucky and were gifted both, but I definitely agree with above, the pack and play mattress sucks and wouldn't be comfortable for the long term. I definitely compare it to a camping or air mattress as far as comfort is concerned. It is great for travel or day trips since it is so portable, but it definitely is too flimsy for the long term.
My twin nephews just turned a year and their cribs are really starting to take a beating, I wouldn't trust them in a pack and play for very long for concern that they might flip it over when it gets big enough. -
Like most we will have both. The PNP will be for the first few months in our room and the crib will be in the nursery once we move him over into it.

I wouldn't use the PnP longer than 3 months... just not enough support, like other posters mentioned. She sleeps so much better in her own bed!
We have a Rock N Play too that has been a lifesaver for her reflux/spit up issues after eating. She slept in that for a few weeks after birth and I wholeheartedly recommend it! I'd gotten it for a different reason (bouncer alternative) but it was great. I'd never even considered the fact that she'd need to sleep in something at an angle if she was spitting up.

PNPs don't have a real mattress, and they are smaller. Plus they are flimsy. Pretty much everything everyone else has said!

We never bought a crib. We had our little one sleep on a mattress on the floor of her room. She still sleeps on the mattress and it works well for us--especially when she used to wake up for middle of the night feedings.
I would just lie next to her, feed her, she'd fall asleep, I'd go back to my bed. -
We have both a PnP and a crib. The crib is much sturdier and comfortable. The PnP was nice for a short while when she was an infant and sleeping in our room. Now that she sleeps in the crib, we have the PnP to take to grandmas house if needed.
