For the extra 2 weeks of paid leave? 
Someone just suggested this to me. I scar and am trying to avoid an ugly keloid among other things. So, while this did cross my mind way back when I first learned about the benefit difference I didn't truly consider it as the go-to game plan.

I didn't get 2 weeks extra for a C-section. It's an additional charge to an employer's STD insurance plan, so plenty don't offer that additional benefit

no because you're not getting 2 weeks because it's just extra but because you need to recover from major surgery while caring for a newborn.

I would never see a doctor that would preform a major surgery just to get two extra weeks of paid leave.

you get an extra two weeks leave at my company for a c-section, but i wouldn't consider healing from surgery to be that perk!

I should have asked the lady how she birthed her kids. Who knows she may have had one herself and her recovery was good. Everyone that asks about my mat leave is very interested about the paid vs unpaid portion.

No, I didn't. My doctor thought I should start thinking about it due to how large I was measuring but even then I didn't consider it. I ended up needing one anyway and my recovery was really difficult so I don't think it would have been worth it if I'd had made the choice.

I wouldn't, but I told myself with LO #1 if I ended up with c-section, at least I can tell myself that's the perk.

My organization offers an extra two weeks for c-section. I could definitely see it influencing someone to go for a RCS instead of a VBAC!

My disability plan does give 6 weeks for natural and 8 weeks for C-section, but I never planned on one. I ended up with an emergency C-section so I guess it was a silver lining.
I am due with LO2 in May and we are going for a repeat C-section, mostly due to how my induction went and my pelvic structure (the doctors think my kids just get stuck in my pelvis in a weird way because of its shape which makes vaginal delivery hard), but with a toddler, it IS nice to be able to pick a day and know when to have childcare coverage and all that, on top of the 8 weeks of disability. (Obviously this depends on the kid not coming early and throwing everything off!)

@Mrs. Lemon-Lime: It's not any of their business, and you are certainly under no obligation to share. What a f*cking ridiculous suggestion. No matter how you slice it, that shit is b-a-n-a-n-a-s. Eta: that kind of attitude reflects and reinforces the all too commonly held belief that maternity leave has little if anything to do with recovery from a serious medical/physical event.

there is no paid in my place of business so it didn't matter what kind of delivery I had. I had a C-section but it was not planned (the first one anyway.)

I would've gotten 2 more weeks pay but it still never crossed my mind. Too risky if not necessary IMO.

@ms.line: this. I had a c-section the first time and my OB encouraged a RCS, and we get an extra two weeks, that plus having no family in town made the RCS very appealing.

@pwnstar: I guess that's what quickly brought me back to reality since I heard a c-section is a beast to recover from. It's too bad that my company doesn't give a blanket amount of paid leave given that it is large enough where it must provide FML. However, while I call my leave a "mat leave" it's really just a STD benefit.

Ummm no, definitely not. I'd seriously question any doctor that would allow me to elect for a c-section without medical reasons.

No, I just had a C-section and it has been a really difficult recovery for me. Not worth 2 weeks off, but my work does 5 weeks paid vacation a year anyway.

No freaking way. I had an emergency C sec and then developed a complication for my 2nd pregnancy which was related to my first C sec.

I have to admit, knowing I get 2 extra weeks of leave strengthened my not wanting a vbac. To be fair, I had a c-section last time due to failure to progress and I'm not a good candidate for vbac. And I'm scared out of my mind of vaginal delivery, lol. Plus my c-section recovery was pretty smooth last time.

Had two c sections (one emergency, one repeat) and the thought never crossed my mind. However, I am lucky and had easy recoveries so the extra time was a nice added bonus.

Yeah, I think part of my decision to not try for a VBAC this time is because my C-section recovery was a breeze.

Definitely not. You get those extra 2 weeks because you need them to recover from a major surgery. Some people have easy recoveries which is great but mine was really horrible.

No but I did say how crazy it is that you'd almost want a csection for the extra 2 weeks of STD. Obviously there's more healing to do from major surgery. It was more of a comment on how messed up our lack of maternity policy is.

No, but it was definitely a consolation prize? Though I have no idea why I got the paid leave I did, my Dr signed off for 12 weeks ahead of time basically because that is how long I could get paid for and then I ended up getting paid 13. I did not ask any questions about that one!
Mat leave in this country is so messed up.

The thought crossed my mind and I did wonder if women opted for a C-section for the extra leave. I've never heard anyone mention it or even joke about it IRL.
