If you had a late walker (anytime after 13-14 months), tell me about it!! When did they take their first steps? When did they actually start walking on their own?
Our LO is 15 months, and still not walking. Her 15 month checkup with her doctor is on Friday, and I'm kind of freaking out.
(At her 12 month appointment, her doctor said something like, "If she's not walking at 15 months, then we'll have a problem!") ... Yeahhhh.

I didn't, but I have plenty of friends whose LO's didn't walk until 15-16 months. Is she crawling/cruising at all?
I know how it feels to worry though...my LO didn't crawl/show any signs of moving until after she was 10 months, which was pretty late.

Ya, LO 2 took her first steps at 19 months and started walking at 20-20.5 months. (Now almost 2 and she is all over the place!) We did PT and EI for her delays because our Dr recommended it. She wasn't crawling til 16 months.

My LO didn’t start walking until after 16 months, and our pediatrician was not concerned at all that she wasn't walking at 15 months. I didn’t walk until I was 2 years old, and never had any issues as a kid or adult.
My experience with LO was that one day she just stood up and walked half-way across her daycare room! 
She didn’t cruise, didn’t hold our hands and take wobbly steps, etc. I guess she just waited until she was really ready to just walk.

@illumina: She's taken a few steps ... We hold her to balance, then she'll take like 2-3 steps to the other one of us. That happened like 3-4 weeks ago, and hasn't improved. Actually, she's almost doing it less ... and I feel like she looks like she's struggling a lot. DH thinks I'm being paranoid.
I saw a 12 month old basically running at Target on Saturday, which was awesome for peace of mind.

@yoursilverlining: I love that!!! Your girl knew what she wanted ... probably watched all of the other LO struggle through it, then was like, "I got this!!".

LO walked a couple days after turning 15 months. The nice part was she was a confident walker from the get-go. She never really had a period of stumbling around or falling over. She was running by 18 months.

Mine both walked before a year, but both my sister and I didn't start until 15 and 16 months! There was never a concern. I bet your pediatrician will say it's fine.

i know plenty of kids that didn't walk until 18 months, olive included. i never worried because she kept making progress. she took her first steps at 17 months and was walking by 18. they usually start worrying by 19 months.

DD took her first steps at 16 months I think but didn't start walking all on her own all the time until 18 months. For her it was a confidence thing. Once she could walk it was several months of having to hold our hand or she would drop to the floor.

@erinpye: My husband said I shouldn't remind the ped about the comment she made at the 12 month appointment. That she was probably being hyperbolic. She'll probably tell me to CTFD!

My son started walking a week before he turned 15 months. He had been cruising foreverrr and we always said that one day he'd just let go. I think he waited until he was truly confident to start walking because he was never really wobbly and didn't fall much at all once he started.

My LO1 was slow on all gross motor things (crawling at 12 months and walking at 15 months). Now at 2 yrs. you would never guess. Just like some of the PP mentioned there was never any unsteadyness once he started.

L was just a week shy of 18 months when he started walking. But he has low muscle tone, which we discovered during some extra evaluations our pediatrician recommended because he refused to bear weight on his legs at 12 months and wasn't pulling to stand at 15 months. At 17 months he finally started cruising along furniture, and that gradually led to taking a few wobbly steps and building his way up from there.

Oh man, this thread is just what I needed to see. My 14 month old won't stand on his own or take any steps and all I heard all weekend from my family was about how he doesn't walk. I was starting to get a bit worried so it's nice to get some reassurance!

My DS didn't walk until he was just over 15 months. Then suddenly he stood up and walked across the room, no issues. I guess he waited until he knew he would do it. He's never been wobbly on his feet. He was rock solid from the beginning. My doctor told me to not be concerned unless he wasn't walking at 18 months.

My LO didn't walk until 18.5 months. But as soon as he finally took a few steps, he was all set and basically walking all the time. He had great balance before that so i knew he could do it, he just wouldn't! Deep down I knew he was okay, but it was a little stressful at the end.

LO didn't walk until the day before he turned 16 months and while I stressed about it like crazy, in hindsight it was the best! He never went through that wobbly phase I see other kids go through. We hardly had any falls. He literally just stood up one Friday afternoon, walked in the kitchen and never looked back. The experience made me a strong believer that when they are ready, they will do something. Before that you'll just drive yourself crazy.

I'm so glad to read some of these responses - so reassuring! My DS is 13 months, cruising like crazy but just isn't confident enough to 'let go'.
His ped actually said he was delayed since he wasn't walking at a year and made me feel like I was doing something wrong for not being concerned yet. Needless to say we are switching doctors.

I was around 15 months when I started walking. My mom says I waited until I knew I could do it without falling.

@littlejoy: D didn't crawl till the week of his 1st birthday. He'd stand at a toy if we put him there around 11 months, but didn't pull himself up until probably 13 or 14 months? He started walking with a walker around 16 months. But he did not take a single independent step until 8 days after he turned 18 months. I was very worried, especially because our first pediatrician told us he was behind on his gross motor. But our second pediatrician assured us he was fine and they wouldn't start worrying until he was 19 or 20 months old...then they would get EI involved. He was just very cautious! As soon as he took those first steps, he was off and running.

The normal range is to 17 months, so your child isn't even behind. My daughter crawled at 12 months and walked at 16. At three, she's one if the strongest and most physically capable kids I know, despite still doing things at the very late end of normal. As long as yours is making progress I wouldn't worry for a second.

My son is almost 17 months and JUST started really walking in the last month. I was worried about what our pediatrician would say at our 15 month appointment too but she was totally supportive. She said he'd probably be walking by the time she sees him at 18 months and sure enough he will be. try not to worry about it!
