@Bao: I know a few friends that had the tech slip up and tell!

I registered for a lot of swaddles, a Moses basket, carrier wraps.
My son hated anything that kept his limbs confined so most of our swaddles/wraps went unused. And I used the Moses basket for a few times while I showered.

@Bao: my best friend, was in a car accident and was sent to ER for emergency ultrasound at 38 weeks and found out it was a girl
a coworker, tech slipped and said it was a boy during anatomy scan
my friend's sister, was being induced with her second and said "male" all over paperwork (doctor also said "he" when she was admitted but she thought it was a mistake)

I had a lot of duplicates, like two packages of bibs, 4 packs of cloth diapers for burp cloths when one would have been fine, but I didn't know!

Oh and the giraffe play mat, totally unnecessary, but it's not a stuffed giraffe sitting in the back of my husband's car.

We bought the "gear" ourselves (registries aren't really a thing here and gifts are usually small gifts - outfits etc - after the birth) but, yeah, we bought loads we didn't need. Various creams, bath products that made her too slippy, tiny nail files I never used, too many clothes to wear, breastfeeding paraphernalia I never got to use, a mini dummy (paci) steriliser I used once, a bottle warmer I stopped using after a couple of weeks...... Family and friends mostly gifted us little blankets - oh, the blankets - and I never used one. It has all been unpacked for DD2 so we will see if any of it gets used this time!

@Cherrybee: wait! You've seen my list...do I have unnecessary stuff?!

@lady baltimore: how are you bathing LO? I'm tempted to skip the bath tub and just use this yellow sponge thing someone on here suggested to prevent baby from slipping in the sink.

We purchased probably 90%of the gear and "registry" ourselves. I created an Amazon registry for the completion discount. I only shared the link with our parents. So basically everything we have I only have myself to blame. We got a lot of gifted clothing and blankets. I'd say I purchased too many lotions and potions, too many breast pads (I didn't leak), and too much stuff I didn't need until later (feeding items and toys), too many clothes in larger sizes (not knowing how big she would be and what season she would end up wearing stuff in.)

@lady baltimore: LOL, I may need to revisit my bath choice.

I never used a grooming kit.

@Finfan: glad you responded though! I was thinking that may be a fun, bonding option too. My God-sister was bathed this way. Her parents didn't tell us when we watched her one weekend and she screamed bloody murder when we tried to give her a solo bath.

@Mrs. Lemon-Lime: we did a combo of everything! I occasional bathe with him, I used to use the infant tub on the counter, I used the kitchen sink a couple times when he could sit but didn't stand or splash (cutest pics and best on my back!). Someone lent us a puj and I used it at my parents house but for some reason it didn't work in our sink.

Too many A and A blankets!! For some reason I registered for two sets of 4 (?) and then we were gifted a third set!!!

I don't think so. I feel like we used everything besides the infant bath tub. It was nice that friends pitched in to get about 20 cloth diapers from my Amazon registry- that's what I really needed.

I made the mistake of buying to much clothing too far in advance, between hand me downs and gifts we dont use everything we have even though T is a slow grower. We just continue to dress her in the same few favorite outfits.

Temporary hand me downs that we get to use a short time and give back when our friends have the second baby. I didn't mind semi ugly or less than ideal choices because I kmew I got to give them back. And some of them clarified what I wanted or didn't want and could then buy my own, if it was something I would use longer. I actually did use the baby bathtub for a while until he could sit up though.

@Mrs. Lemon-Lime: I wouldn't like to say No, in all seriousness, you wont know until baby is here. I had all the ideas about the kind of parent Id be and the products Id use - for example, I was going to use lavender bath creme and do baby massage with matching oil - to signify "wind down time". But the creme made the baby slippy and she hated being naked after her bath (cold) so that didn't work. But other products proved a godsend. Its all trial and error and depends entirely on your baby's likes and dislikes. At this point in your first pregnancy, researching products and gear is a genuine pleasure, so enjoy it!
