I am 24 weeks and am supposed to have my glucose test at the next appointment in 2 weeks. Unfortunately I still have pretty bad morning sickness and can't go more than a couple hours max without eating or I will throw up. I have to eat right away when I first wake up (can't even shower first) or I will throw up. My Dr. said I have to fast before this 1 hour test but lots of things I read online say that you don't have to. I'm concerned about puking during the test, but when I asked the nurse about it, she said, schedule it first thing (8am), take zofran and if you throw up, we'll have to redo it. I don't think that is gonna cut it. So I'm curious. Did you have to fast before the 1 hour test? Anyone throw up? Anyone refuse the test? Is there another option???

Nope. They told me to eat my normal breakfast.

Not really - my test was at 4 pm and he said no eating or drinking after 2.

Yes - but I was told to get there 1st thing in the morning.

No fasting here, though I tried to eat a lower-sugar breakfast.

i had to fast with my first pregnancy for the 1 hour test. i didn't get sick, but usually need to eat right away with or without being pregnant in the morning, so i was worried. i made it through and scarfed a breakfast sandwich immediately afterward.
with my 2nd pregnancy, because i didn't have GD the first time, my doctor ordered a hemoglobin A1c test that measures months of your blood sugar levels instead of the instant one. i did not have to fast for this! maybe ask your doctor about this option instead?

No. I just couldn't eat or drink anything during the hour I was waiting for my blood draw.

Nope, they told me to just avoid eating a lot of carbs that morning and I couldn't eat or drink during the test. If they insist, see if you can get them to give you the test paperwork and go to a Quest Diagnostics lab that opens earlier. My OB offered to do that and some of them open as early as 6:30.

My doc told me to have a good breakfast. My appointment was around 1 I think and she didn't want me to eat for several hours before it.

@mrs.shinerbock: @ms.line: I just left a message with the nurse who I'm sure is rolling her eyes, asking her to ask the doctor about an alternate test or solution. Otherwise I will see if they can do the Quest thing I guess.

Nope, said to eat normally before (which is good since my appt is at 10:45). I am going to be careful not to have a sugary breakfast.

Did not have to fast, but was told that fasting would give a more accurate number. For LO1 I fasted for 12 hours and still failed (but passed 3 hour). for LO2 I just fasted for 2 hours before the test, still failed it, but passed the 3 hour again.

I had HG and was terrified of barfing both times, but differently-- food made me feel worse, so I had the opposite problem. My OB told me to eat before the test, so I wouldn't be sicker with all of that sloshy sugar on an empty stomach. I ate some eggs beforehand, and ate and rested afterward, and didn't throw up, though it can give you a pretty wicked headache.

@travellingbee: This is my fourth pregnancy, I've never had GD before, but I always fail the 1 hour, so I was told to fast for this one. Well, to not eat breakfast. I'm going to go so far as to eat low carb a few days before and fast.

No, just said not to eat sugary stuff that day. My test was at 3 or 4 pm so there's no way I could have fasted. They gave me the impression that it was important to eat normally because the test is supposed to measure how your body is processing the foods you eat, and fasting can actually give false results...but it seems like not everyone is in agreement on that, so who knows.

Nope, my doc did not ask me to fast. I did however make sure to eat a more protein rich breakfast than a carb rich one. Just in case.

I had to fast for the 1 hour before the test. i.e. Drink the crap and then nothing for the next 1 hour. But whatever I did before I drank the orange stuff didnt matter.

I had to fast before the 1-hr and the 3-hr. It sucked. I was really thirsty.

@travellingbee: Nope, no water either. It was okay during the 1-hr test, but by the third hour I was so, so thirsty and hungry. Both of my tests were scheduled at 7:30 am.
ETA: We thought the no water was a crock because my husband and his endocrinologist said the amount of water in your system doesn't affect your glucose readings.

She told me I "am supposed to" but that if i ate a high protein breakfast (my usual fare--bacon and eggs and cheese), that it wouldn't affect it.

@blackbird: this is the conclusion I came to with the nurse when she called back. She was pretty insistent that I needed to until I explained the situation in more detail and she agreed that would probably be fine especially since it's my second pregnancy with no history.

@travellingbee: I don't think nurses in general get to deviate from the standard info too much! My dr specifically said "don't tell the nurse!" heh. But i mean, come on....it's 50/50 across the US so how is that helping?!

For every glucose test I've had, my instructions were to fast and nothing to eat or drink throughout. I had one with LO1 and 3 with LO2. The hour ones weren't bad, but my 3 hour one was hard. My blood sugar was so low by my 4th blood draw that I almost passed out.

My doctor, in Canada, said that it's cruel and unusual punishment to make a pregnant woman fast unnecessarily, and that it's really not necessary for the (one-hour) glucose test. She didn't say anything about the three-hour one, but I passed the first one, anyway.

My doc said it didn't matter either way. I went straight after my AM appt so I hadn't eaten yet and I did fail. Passed the 3 hour with flying colors. It's a dumb test! Good luck!

Nope. They said eat normally, but try to keep carbs and sugary stuff to a minimum.

My doc said to eat but not donuts! But when I was there the tech asked if I was fasting as if I should be. I ate eggs and it was fine!

I did the 3 hour glucose tolerance test and had to fast for it, I thought it was the same for the shorter 1 hour test.

My dr told me not to fast for the 1 hour and eat like I normally do. I got soooo sick during the test and failed that one. For the 3 hour, I fasted and actually felt much better during the test and passed.

I fasted with my DD. awful idea. I was so sick feeling. Never got sick though.
I didn't fast with DS. Just ate a banana and some Cheerios for breakfast and I felt great during the glucose test and I passed. -
For my first, I didn't have to fast. Switched midwife groups and I had to fast for the second. Couldn't drink with either during it.

No fasting with either pregnancy, two different hospitals. No water allowed though during the one hour, only "tiny sips"

I had to fast for both of mine but did schedule them first thing in the morning.

I don't get the glucose done; I get my a1c levels checked instead. Can't remember if I had to fast though.

I was told I didn't need to for the one hour test by my nurse. But when I went to schedule my appointment for the afternoon, the girl at the appointment desk made me do it in the morning since she said it would be to hard to fast during the day. Talk about mixed messages!
took the 3 hour one (fasted) and passed.
