Do you feel that baby on board signs are an effective way to encourage caution amongst fellow drivers on the road?

Not really sure.. but it does make me more patient if someone is driving 10 mph slower than the speed limit which drives me nuts.

I thought that purpose of those was to make sure first responders look for children in an accident. I could be wrong...

I also heard that the signs are for first responders in case of an accident!

@simplyfelicity: This was a topic on a pregnancy app I have recently and a lot of people thought it was for first responders and a lot said it wasn't. I'd like to hear from a first responder if this is something they look for.

I think it was just a couple years ago that I first learned that people used them to encourage other drivers to be more cautious. It had never occurred to me that that might be the goal. I always thought it was just a way for parents to brag about their kids, like those stick figure families people put on their rear windshields.

They have zero impact on my driving, but they seem to impact the driving of those with the signs as they are often the worst drivers out on the road.
ETA: I don't know about the first responder thing - if you have a car seat in the car, that's the big tip off for people to look for children.

So snopes says the first responders thing is false, but also I never would have guessed that these have been around since the 80's!

I heard about the first responder - but it was one of those things that get shared a million times on facebook and it said it was from a first responder, so I don't know if that's true or not.
I don't think it actually works for people to drive better but I have no idea.

I have been curious about the first responder thing -- would be interested to hear from a first responder. I would think it's not something they look for, or potentially couldn't see (wrecked car, sign could fly off, etc). It would be the only reason I would acknowledge the validity of the signs. Otherwise they just bug me because the drivers tend to be the dangerously slow drivers hahahah. Sorry to be cynical -- I have a long commute

@yoursilverlining: haha yep. I almost *always* see the person texting and driving when they have the sign.

Nope. In fact, they only explain to me why you're driving like an idiot.

I asked a cop and a firefighter if they look for those signs, and they laughed and said "no". There are a million other things that they would look for, or notice before a sign that would most likely be thrown off of a window in a serious accident anyways.

No, they will not look for it, If it is there and they see it, great, but I drive my car with out LO all the tome and if I had said sign on window.... they would be looking for a LO that thankfully wasn't there? The packages on these states it is to alert drivers of your baby in the car and drive with caution.

It's not to encourage caution. It is to notify people in the case of an accident that there is someone unable of escaping on their own so they can look for the child and rescue them

Even if most people don't give a ish (or maybe they already drive perfectly), I am super extra "more" careful and understanding (like if they're driving a little slower I won't think they're an idiot, moron etc) when I see that sign on a car . And again I'll "get it" and not judge
persimmon / 1331 posts
Nope, no one cares!
And more importantly, who actually takes the sign down when their LO isn't in the car? I doubt very few do!
pomegranate / 3791 posts
I don't think they do anything.
And the first responder thing seems weird to me. You would think that the carseat would be a pretty good clue without needing a sign...not that it matters since that isn't what the sign is actually for anyways, but still.

Every time I see those signs I think, well good thing you told me. I was going to ram directly into your car with mine, but now I guess I won't
pomelo / 5607 posts
They always make me think of this. But really, I just give people with those signs a little more grace if they're driving really slowly. I also am a little more cautious around them. Not because I worry about me hitting a car with a baby, but because they're more likely to suddenly be distracted by trying to turn and soothe baby or something!

Also, I registered for this, but only because I have a cupcake problem! I would never bother with the regular ones.

First responders look for carseats in cars, not signs. I'd also be concerned that they could bring attention to infants like those new baby signs and stork figures people stopped using because they alerted people looking to steal babies to the presence of a new baby

@MsMini: good point! It seems unlikely that a kid gets thrown but the sign stays on.
I have to say, though, when people drive like an idiot around me, I want to yell I HAVE BABIES!!
