I love them as long as they are practical (like for tummy time or picnics outside). I don't want them to just display or store them.

I love quilts! I may be biased because I am also a quilter, but I love to receive them. I enjoy making them for my friends, and I don't even care if they never get used (though, when I get pictures of them being used, it does make my day).

Love love love quilts!
DD got a TON of homemade quilts and blankets - I don't necessarily think they're all the cutest things ever, but they mean SO much to me, to know that someone put in all that time and effort. I make a conscious effort to give them all equal love
Your quilts are BEAUTIFUL! Ain't no way someone wouldn't want one of those!
@blackbird: Adorable!!! Love the animal quilts! And the rainbow one!

I am enjoying seeing everyone's quilts! We got two from DH's family and they are both hanging up in our home. We will always treasure them!
I will say, we got a lot of the fleecy baby blankets (not handmade) and I told DH I wanted to return them but he felt bad because a lot of nice people got them for me. Well, I cleaned out LO's closet last week and all but two are going to be donated....now that it isn't cool to put a blanket in a crib, I've found them to be pretty useless. Plus we always have our own personal blankets we can use as picnic blankets, etc. I kept two to use as lap blankets for the carseat but I don't really know how else to use them.

@rawrasaur: You are so talented! We received several quilts, including one from a woman that DH works with who I've never met. I appreciate it so much because I know how much work went into them, but they are not all used very frequently.
The ones that I really treasure are those given to me by people who are very close to us and involved in M's life. My favorite quilt was made by my aunt. She went through lots and lots of scraps of fabric and put row after row of little squares with shapes or pictures on them. She even though enough to make the back a dark blue starry sky in case the front was over-stimulating as a baby. M LOVES to sit on the floor with the quilt and tell me what each square is: "ball, apple, baby, frog, dog, key" on and on and on. I never thought she would learn so much from a quilt. It's not the most beautiful quilt that we got, but it was made with M in mind - it's her favorite toy!

I seriously love handmade quilts. Even if I received lots of quilts that were not my style I would use them! Your quilts look awesome. Maybe you can let the expecting parents know that you would love to make a quilt for their baby and ask if they have color preferences or particular styles they are drawn to (send a few examples of your quilts.) I'm forcing my brother to make me one for our babies and I have a pinterest board of colors and ideas for him but I don't want to restrict his creativity too much, the fabric and pattern choices are up to him. In any case keep on quilting girl.

We use the quilt my mom made DS1 on his twin bed now, along with the one my grandma made for me. My mom cheats though, she buys the fabric as one piece and then stitches around the shapes. I actually don't like the one she made for DS2 at all, the pattern just isn't my style, and it's so thin, like she completely forgot to put any batting inside. Oh well. I plan to make one for each of them by cutting up all their receiving blankets when DS2 outgrows them.
That said, I think they're a nice gift if you're close to the person, and they likely will get used in one way or another!

@rawrasaur: and other quilting bees--do any of you sell your quilts? I love them, but they can be so expensive!!! I'd love to support people from here. Can you wall me your info if you sell?

@MrsF: I love this!
I actually saved a lot of DS's onesies with cute pictures/sayings to make a baby blanket/quilt out of. I just have to, you know, learn how to do it!

I love quilts.... but I did get a ton of blankets and we live in a warm weather state so I don't use all of them. I use one for decoration and it lays on the glider, and one LO likes to lay on the floor to lay on for diaper changes.
When I was pregnant my friend took me to the fabric store so I could show her the kind of fabrics I would like. I'm so glad she did that because she kept pointing out very modern fabrics which were cute but not for me, and I was able to lead her in a different direction.

If it was handmade by a loved one/friend I would love getting baby quilts! Maybe the article meant store bought ones? I love the ones you made! They could be used for more than just play IMO!
My grandmother made quilts for my siblings and myself a long time ago. I'm not sure she quilts anymore...I wish she did so she could make LO a quilt! I still have the quilt she made me over 15 years ago. The style is very middle school girl but I still love it!

DH grew up with a quilt his aunt made him when he was a baby - it was his lovey! Now it's all tattered and thin but he has the fondest of memories of his quilt. He feels so strongly that every baby should have a special quilt. Personally I'd love it if someone made one for my baby!

I'm going to be the dissenter, I don't like quilts. But I think it's more a matter of personal taste. We received a handmade quilt for DS and while I LOVE the gesture and truly appreciate the time, effort and thoughtfulness that went into it, it's just not my style. But I sent it to daycare, so at least it gets used for nap time.
Edit: I actually made a quilt once, but I didn't like how it turned out, so it's now in the guest bedroom at my dad's.

I wish I knew someone that made quilts. I am a huge fan of handmade gifts, but all we got were store-bought blankets. I don't know how you could hate something that someone put all that work into.

i love quilts too... especially the heavier ones
we got 2 cute ones for LO from family and friends when he was born! i will say that i understand why some people don't like them -- when the pattern/colour/design is not to your taste, it's hard to be super excited about it at first. they're still useful, though.
i don't sew, but if i ever did, i would want to make (or receive) THIS one: ahhhhh i love it sooooo much!

I adore quilts - I always love seeing yours on IG! My great grandmother and grandmother were/are quilters, so its a skill that is on my bucket list so I can pass it down. Their quilts are so special to me!

@rawrasaur: Everyone of our boys' great grandmas (and they have 4 living ones) made a quilt or blanket for them. The ones we used the most were the bigger ones that they could put on the floor to play. Right now, they're in a stage where they just don't use blankets or quilts for anything, but I suspect that in another year or two all those items will resurface for use in making forts, sleeping, etc. Even though we have a LOT (6 for each baby because a great-aunt and one of my BFFs made each boy a quilt, too), we treasure them because of the people who made them. I say if you're close to the parents, it will generally be very appreciated!

@rawrasaur: i love your quilts! most people i know appreciate the time and effort that goes into making a quilt like that. i'm probably biased because my mom sews and made us all quilts for our beds growing up. i made our LO a simple quilt because i wanted to be able to make him something.
MIL gifted me one from a craft fair once that i actually donated because it wasn't my taste and DH would never sleep under a quilt with all that pink! lol (she doesn't know!) but i wouldn't have given it away had she actually made it.

I would love a handmade quilt. None of my family or DH's family does any quilting. He did receive one small quilt made by my good friend's mom. It's not exactly my style but I used to put it out for him to lay on all the time when he was a baby. I think the thoughtfulness and time that goes into handmade gifts, makes them really special.
@rawrasaur: I absolutely adore all the quilts I've seen you post pics of!

Wow everyone's quilts are so nice! I love quilts!
I make quilts too... this is one of my biggest fears that no one will want my quilts... I have actually never given any of my quilts away as presents due to this fear... instead I just sell my quilts online... I think at least knowing that people pay for them... that they are going to a home that will appreciate them.
I guess I know I worked long and hard on them... and fabric is not cheap... that I don't want them ended up in someone's closet or garage sale.

@rawrasaur: I love quilts but it definitely depends on the design and color scheme. I just ordered 2 from a friend that sews and can't wait to gift one to my niece! I love your purple one. That is something I would buy for a gift!

Those are beautiful!!! I think those quilts that come with bedding sets can be kind of pointless but a handmade blanket will always be special. I still have my baby quilt made by a family friend and DS loves it. I kind of wish we had a handmade blanket for him.

@mrsa. F i LOVE that!
@rawrasaur I meant to comment that I LOVE the colors you chose.

I love quilts, too. Don't have a baby, yet, but I am always cold, so I love have a blanket or a throw to keep me warm. I'm sure I'll love any blankets that are given to us at a baby shower.

MI L is a quilter and made one for our wedding gift! I can't wait to have her make one for a LO!

@rawrasaur: I seriously love the second one with the ruffles. It's gorgeous!
I love handmade blankets, quilts or crocheted/knitted afghans. I admit, though, that I don't use them as much because I don't want to wear them out and I'm afraid washing them too much will ruin them-- and we know anything a baby goes on needs to be washed a lot. But now I'm thinking I should just use them more-- what's the point of storing them for a special occasion that might not come up?
My mom crochets and was saying that she wasn't sure if she should keep making blankets for babies, since they can't use them in the crib, and i was like, well, I hope you will for MY babies!! I would have been so sad if she didn't get one! And DH's grandmother quilts and knits, and has already given a beautiful quilt to C, that we are going to hang up on her wall after we paint.
wonderful cherry / 21504 posts
@blackbird: Oh I LOVE your owl ones! I may have to show those to DH's grandmother as a hint, should she ever decide to make another one for C...
