All of the middle schools (though not elementary schools and high schools) in our current district have uniforms! Navy or khaki pants, navy or white or gray polo shirt. That sounds miserable! I would have hated having to wear a uniform when I was in MS.

@Maysprout: when I was in high school, there was no dress code until I was a junior. We could wear belly shirts, all kinds of hats, short skirts. Now it seems like schools are crazy strict (uhhh, no leggings and yoga pants?).

@Rainbow Sprinkles: really? I didn't know that! There were a few north end elementary schools that did when we checked out school around here though.
We don't have any that wear uniforms in our district.

@Rainbow Sprinkles: so weird! Are they funded by the state? Parents? My uniforms in private school were around $400 for just a few outfit combinations (a few pants, a skirt, collared shirt and sweater).

Many elementary and middle schools do but the HS I work at does not. Honestly, I wish we did. The dress code issues are RIDICULOUS, I totally get individuality however when half your students come to school looking like they're ready for the club it causes more trouble than it is worth.
FWIW, I'm jaded about the whole thing because administration does not enforce what the dress code is (and I think yoga pants should 100% be allowed!). I sent a student down who had holes in her jeans all the way to where her pockets were hanging out and they said it was no problem.

The only schools around here that have uniforms are the catholic high schools.
I wore a uniform in high school, it wasn't bad, I actually enjoyed it, less to think about in the morning. The days that sucked were the non uniform days! Everyone was so brand obsessed and that's when you found out who was 'cool'. -

Not for elementary school, not sure above that. I think it's by school and parents can vote every few years, actually.
However I do not mind uniforms. I wore one my entire school life, and while I complained about it in middle school, by high school I was glad to not have to worry and in college I missed it!
The catholic schools have them and I think they are cute.

Many high schools and middle schools here do, not sure about elementary. I'm actually a fan (of general uniforms, not specific brands you have to buy which are $$) since I think it cuts down on the status race, simplifies getting ready in the morning, and is probably cheaper as they get older and would otherwise want more outfit diversity.

In Autstralia every school has a uniform. It took me a while to get used to it, coming from Canada where it was only private schools that did (even then, they were usually guidelines rather than actual uniforms). The school i teach at now is SO strict on uniform! And it really is uniform. No variation whatsoever allowed from kid to kid. I kind of see the benefit but I'm still on the fence about it all.

Yes, both the elementary school where I work and the one where our kids will go (different districts) have uniforms. The middle schools and high schools do not.

Several elementaries around me do, some don't. I love dress code and wish ms would go for it--but it would never go over here. So many distractions start at an early age surrounding dress, it really allows students to at least take out that element of distraction.

Not public schools (although some in Chicago do). The school where I teach does, and I had them k-12, and honestly I didn't mind them!

Some schools do, some don't. I really hope H's school has uniforms. It was so much simpler.

The public school district in town does. I am not sure about the school district my kids would go to. I am happy I never had to wear uniforms.

Growing up in long beach, ca we were the first school district on the country to require them. I started wearing them in 5th grade (94). So you can all thank us! Now I live in Louisiana which has them as well.

Nope, no public schools around here have uniforms.
When I was in school, I wished they had. They made the dress code so specific that it was a pain to find clothes at times. A dress code would have made everyone's lives easier.

All schools in Australia have uniforms. I never minded and I'm sure it was cheaper for my mum.

All schools in the UK have uniforms - not a dress code, but a specific uniform and they are adorable! I wore a uniform in HS (catholic school) and absolutely loved it! I'm so excited for my girls to wear uniforms as well - life is so much easier all around.

Growing up I wore a uniform until high school - it was so nice and easy getting dressed in the morning! I remember starting High school and was soooo stressed trying to figure out what to wear!

No, one of the districts piloted uniforms but it didn't go well. Many of our charter schools have uniforms, however.
