I eat very little fruit because it's so expensive, and the kids go through so much of it. Raspberries are especially expensive, but we also go through a lot of strawberries and asian pear.
What about you?

yes and it drives DH crazy!!! I will cut up a mango and he will start to eat it and I am like "no! its for the kids"
pomegranate / 3503 posts
I do. My son is so picky, so when I find something he likes, I let him eat as much as he wants - especially if it's healthy.

Mrs. Bee you are totally my mom. She never ate anything "good" she bought like cherries and strawberries and raspberries. She would painstakingly take the tops of the raspberries and deal with pomegranates just for me and my dad. She still does it to this day!
wonderful pear / 26210 posts
No, I don't do that. If I want something to eat, I'll generally get it, regardless of price or if my kid likes it or not.
pear / 1837 posts
Yes, fruit! Mainly raspberries, strawberries, and blueberries as I make sure to only buy organic and they are so expensive. I do allow myself to eat bananas.
papaya / 10570 posts
No, I'm the other way - I'm more likely to buy and eat certain foods because I want my LO to eat them. Avocados are a prime example - I love them but I never really ate them very often until DD came along. Now I buy them so we can eat them together!

Nope, I try to budget so we can all eat what we want, but because of this we don't buy organic fruits/veggies. I do only buy fruit that is on sale though. I go in with an option mind, berries have been cheap lately and grapes expensive so we've been eating more berries and no grapes.

When we discovered LO loved olives while eating pizza we gave him all the olives off the pizza even on slices were weren't eating... he ate all the olives... so we have left over pizza without olives. When ever we get pizza now we make sure it order it with olives and pick them all off for him before we start eating.
This is an extreme case. Normally he just eats what we eat but very rarely if we discover he likes something from our food a lot more than the rest we tend to give him all that we have.

Same, fruit. I LOVE fruit but it is so expensive, I will only buy it off season for my kiddo.
cantaloupe / 6687 posts
I find myself doing this all the time. I save all the fruit for LO and hardly eat any myself. My mom is always getting on me that I need the vitamins too and now that I'm pregnant she's constantly reminding me to eat some fruit too. I just hate cutting it all up and having to go to the store to get more.
honeydew / 7444 posts
Yes, all of our organic strawberries and blueberries. $20 for 2 boxes of fruit means i leave them for LO.
LO also loves shrimp so i leave them for her.
kiwi / 548 posts
Yes, with blackberries! We probably spend $25 a week alone on them! They are far and away both of my kids favorite food and we go through them so quickly. I definitely give my husband dirty looks if he ever eats them! We also buy bananas, apples, oranges and strawberries but the grown ups are allowed to eat those freely
honeydew / 7091 posts
@Raindrop: Hah, same for us! For a while I wasn't giving L any grains so she got ALL our pizza toppings. Bread and cheese for me and DH!
L gets all the berries if I buy any, but I keep the strawberry tops for my smoothies (exciting, I know).
I purposefully do not give her any mango because I (selfishly) don't want to have to share that with her. That's my ONE treat!
coconut / 8430 posts
Yup. I made chicken enchiladas the other night and she unexpectedly LOVED them. So I gave her everything off my plate. If she will eat it, I am giving it to her. We used to eat a lot of fruit but I find that I save it for her now.
@Raindrop: we have done the exact same thing! Haha!
grapefruit / 4731 posts
@swurlygurl: LOL been there. LO loves olives the most but he definitely loves most topping too. Cheese pizza for parents.
cantaloupe / 6751 posts
Nope, we get our fruit from Costco so there's always plenty to go around
bananas / 9227 posts
Yes! Mushrooms, cauliflower, baked sweet potatoes, and grapes. She used to love blueberries and they were like gold, we'd never eat them unless she force fed us
pineapple / 12234 posts
If there's only one or two of something left, I save it for them (like string cheese or yogurt) unless I'm going to the store that day.
hostess / wonderful honeydew / 32460 posts
I don't eat many strawberries or blackberries because both of my kids LOVE them.
persimmon / 1147 posts
Yes! I love fruit but as you said its expensive so I hold back from DD's favorites. I will also save food as leftovers specifically for her dinner the next day (we eat after she goes to bed).
blogger / eggplant / 11551 posts
Yes, I find myself feeling guilty when I start noshing on raspberries and blueberries because those are their favorites! So I hardly touch it.
nectarine / 2220 posts
I don't understand this whole fruit is so expensive that grown ups don't get any issue... DH and I need good healthy stuff just as much as she does. But maybe we live in a really cheap area for produce.
That said, I don't think I've had a pizza crust in the last couple months, since she loves to gnaw on them (and then throw them on the ground). If she surprisingly likes something I'm eating, I'm usually quick to hand over as much as she'll eat, but going forward know to buy more so we can all eat together.
cantaloupe / 6923 posts
@Mrs. Bee: Can you mail fruit in a package? I have a small orchard of Asian pears and don't eat them. I need to send you some!
watermelon / 14206 posts
No I don't. Well all eat what we feel like eating. I wouldn't tell DH he can't have something healthy cause DS would want it. We have lots of healthy options. DS can learn to live without until we buy more.
cantaloupe / 6017 posts
I save her the bananas because otherwise all I hear all morning is "nana?" "nana?" "nana!"
coconut / 8861 posts
Nope, all fruit is fair game in our house. I'd rather spend more money on fruit and veggies than packaged goods for all of us in the house.
pomelo / 5524 posts
I do in order to avoid having to go to the store again! I absolutely hate grocery shopping, and LO goes through fruit so quickly that I can't keep enough in the house. So I'll definitely give up my portion so that he can have it!
grapefruit / 4823 posts
No. We eat whatever we want, regardless if it's his favorite thing. Why shouldn't we be able to enjoy it too? Besides, he's not a fan of fruit so it would probably go bad before he'd eat it.
honeydew / 7091 posts
To avoid an extra trip to the grocery store in any given week we often end up saving cherry tomatoes for L as they start to dwindle. Girl loves her tomatoes!
admin / watermelon / 14210 posts
@anonysquire: yes you can but they're heavy so not worth the expense!
grapefruit / 4235 posts
I rarely eat bananas anymore b/c it is ROUGH around here when we run out of them. Seriously, the kid wakes up and demands a banana. But at least they're cheap!
honeydew / 7091 posts
@dagret: Haha, us too! It's one of the first things out of her mouth when she sees me in the morning (after book). It's so nice that they are so cheap!
