We've never put a gate around the Christmas tree, so far the kids haven't bothered it. We put the breakable ornaments up high though. My two cats are the ones I should be baby proofing it for, they take the ornaments off and run with them!

ha my moms cat literally sits IN the tree. such a creep!!! you just occasionally see her eyes glowing alongside the lights. their tree is so big that she's pretty camouflaged in it.

We are either going to skip the tree or get a small one for the dining table. DS is about 15 months and into EVERYTHING and loves ripping at trees and bushes in the park and and yard (and then shoving the twigs and leaves in his mouth) so that's just not gonna happen this year. I can't explain to him yet why he can't touch certain things.

We've never done anything more than putting breakable ornaments up high. He's never really messed with it.

We put all of the breakable ornaments high where LO can't reach and so far he's been pretty good.

My tree is totally kid friendly, it is hers! So she is allowed to interact with it.

We have really cheap shatterproof ornaments on the tree so the only baby proofing I've done is using fishing line instead of hooks on the lower ornaments. DS will sometimes try to take an ornament off, but usually doesn't mess with the tree much.

I don't know what we will do. My son is 20 months and literally gets in to everything. Climbs everything. Throws everything. It will be a disaster!! Last year he wasn't mobile. So easy. Lol

I put breakable items up high and used it as an oppourtunity to teach her not to touch things. She was 15 months old and she understood that she had to be gentle.

@gingerbebe: Exact same boat. DH wants to do the usual decor, but I told him that since I'm the one at home I'm digging my heels in. I literally feel like a large tree would be a danger to LO, he can't not make mischief.

@Boogs: I just ordered a small tabletop tree, a pack of mini ornaments and two strings of battery powered LED lights from Amazon. I'll put one string of lights and the ornaments on the tree and place in the middle of our formal dining table and place gifts around that. Maybe get a tiny star and mini candy canes from Target. I'll get some fresh pine flocking for our mantle and wrap the second string of lights around that and get a wreath for the door. Maybe one of those huge poinsettias from Costco for the porch. I was gonna do stockings but I realized our son could yank those right off so no to those this year! I'm thinking by next year I can reason with him about a real tree or get him his own felt tree or hank Charlie Brown tree but no way this year is happening.

@Grace: ha!! My 16 month takes "no" and "don't touch" as a personal challenge to see what kind of reactions he can get. It delights and tickles him to do something he was redirected from

@Boogs: trader joes had tiny potted Rosemary plants that look like little Christmas trees and wee little poinsettias too. Might be perfect for the kitchen!

We only put up plastic ornaments. Our pretty glass ones will come back out when the kids are older.

DD1 was 9 months old for her first Christmas, and so 21 months for her 2nd Christmas and she never bothered the tree. DD2 is 14.5 months and more prone to mischief but my big kid would be devastated without a tree, so we may have to gate it since we really only have room for it in the room she plays in most often.

No, I'm trying to teach my LOs to leave it alone, but so far, I'm failing spectacularly. I tried to put all my fragile ornaments up high but DD2 (21 months) is very tall, so if I kept everything out of her reach, the tree would be half bare.
The tree has been up for two days and she's already managed to break one of my Waterford ornaments that I thought I had high enough to be out of reach. I may have cried a little

We put our tree up yesterday. We decorated the lower half with plastic balls (they look like glass, though) and ornaments made of durable materials. We put our more precious ornaments higher up. We are implementing the 1 finger rule (you can only touch with 1 finger!), which is going so-so, but we are hopeful. If we have to I will wrap some large boxes with books to use as a barrier... As a last resort!

We are really struggling with the one year old and the tree. I've got durable ornaments on the bottom of the tree. And the four year old made some foam and felt ornaments, they are all on the bottom too. I gave up on the beautiful tree a couple of years ago. I now have one with colored lights and all sorts of crazy colorful and homemade stuff.

No breakable ornaments, and the tree is secured to a hook embedded in the wall with a loop of green twine -- not the most attractive thing but I really don't want it to tip over. Even though it's fake, it's still really heavy and I don't trust the stand that goes with it.

Other then putting the non breakable at the bottom. But she will go and look at her Elsa ornament (her pick for her ornament for the year) but she doesn't bother with it otherwise. Just asks for the lights to be on if they aren't.

Not really. We just forgo the big real tree this year and got a skinny fake tree so it could be tucked away in the corner so there is only one "side" that she could access. She will steal and ornament here & there but she'll get bored and go do something else.

We didn't and it wasn't much of a problem. I don't use shatterproof ornaments either. I just don't put a to of stuff near the bottom of the tree (I also have a dog whose tail does the most damage.)

Nope. I didn't put the expensive breakables up, though. E likes the lights. The cats like the ornaments.

@gingerbebe: Cute! We setup our whole tree like normal because DH bought a gate to go around it. The gate sucked and survived a whole 2 seconds with LO and actually made him want to great more mayhem. So, lots of redirection now lol.
