Do you cloth diaper?

i thought about cloth diapering before i gave birth, but with everything else i was learning as a new mom i said forget it! i also didn't want to deal with cleaning up meconium and liquidy breastmilk poop.

now that my girl is 9-months i'm rethinking the idea of cloth diapers. there's just so much out there i don't know where to begin. i bought some online recently and am waiting for their arrival. if you cloth diaper can you share some advice for a newbie? what detergent do you use, how many rinse cycles, what do you do with your dirty diapers, etc??

We use Flips and Econobums, and I think they're great! Everyone says how much easier AIOs are, but really, it's NOT a big deal to use a cover and prefold. There are days with a wiggly toddler when I'm annoyed, but it's not rocket science. And honestly, I thought breastfeeding poop was easier to deal with than real food poop, because BF poop dissolves in the washing machine! Just stick that sucker straight in the wetpail and don't think about it again!

What we do: I have a "wet pail" (a little "simple human" style trash can with a removable plastic pail) next to the toilet. Poopers go in there, after the solids are dumped in the toilet and the diaper is sprayed down with the sprayer my husband installed on our toilet (we just got the parts at Lowes, following an online tutorial). Wet diapers go in a Planet Wise wetbag hanging next to the changing table.

I wash them in hot first, the longest cycle my machine has (almost 3 hours) and then will do a varying number of cold rinses, either another shorter wash or just a rinse cycle. Then I line dry. I wash in plain, powdered Tide (less than half the recommended amt) which is ok... I would love to use a better, more natural detergent because it's built up on the Flip staydry inserts and Chickie can't wear them next to her skin now because she'll rash. She also can't wear cloth overnight either.

We also use cloth wipes.

@bykes187 - so far i like the prefold and cover system the best. funny thing is i like my econobums the most and they were the cheapest (flips and econobums are made by the same company by the way). i like being able to reuse the covers over and over again, and it really is so easy to put an insert before using a cover. i'm still waiting for my snappis to come, but i'm thinking i don't even really need them. good thing i only bought a 3-pack. i am glad i have some AIO's on hand though for my husband or anyone else that might have to do the diaper changes every now and again.

i've been debating whether or not to buy the planet wise wet bag... it's actually in my "wish list" on amazon, but i like your system so i think i'll just go ahead and buy it. i'll just move my step pail into the bathroom and get a wet bag for the wet diapers. thanks for the tips.

You're welcome! I just had the step pail for a while and it made a great difference having the bag, too. This way the poop stink is OUT of the baby's room, and the covers for wet diapers are less likely to need attention (I will handwash covers that are wetted or have teeny tiny amounts of poop on them for further use before wash day) so they can stay right at the table. So convenient.

Wash routine:

1. Rinse off all diapers before they go into the pail (simple plastic bucket with a lid). Even the pee diapers. Everything is wet so that when I wash, they're actually getting clean instead of absorbing dirty water.
2. Wash every other day
3. Hot 'power' wash with the same amount of detergent I'd use for a normal laundry load (I have a front loader, use a additive-free powder detergent, most recently Country Save.)
4. Cold 'extra' rinse.
5. Dryer for the inserts, covers & pockets I hang dry to preserve the elastic.

I really recommend the Rumparooz wet bag (it's a 'D' shape). The sealed seams are key - other bags that don't have sealed seams leak after awhile.

I've used: gDiapers (when he was a newborn), Fuzzi Bunz sized diapers, Mommy's Touch pockets, one Mommy's Touch AIO that I got second-hand, Bum Genius 3.0, Flips, prefolds, GroVia, and the Disana and Little Beetle wool covers.

My son potty-trained before 2. I sometimes miss doing diaper laundry - it was so satisfying to take out fresh-smelling diapers from the washer, and I had a nice rhythm/routine going for awhile.

I plan to purchase the new Bum Genius Freetime diapers that we being released next month. Before I was pregnant the idea of cloth diapering seemed so far fetched for me but after doing lots of research I'm actually excited to start!

It's lots of fun to CD - I had to restrain myself from buying even more diapers because there are so many cute prints & new updates coming out all the time. I used to buy handbags & shoes before I became a mom...after I became a mom, I had a cloth diaper shopping addiction!

I love my bg elementals! They're all on one and one size, so it makes everything really easy.
_we put a disposable liner in to scoop out the poo
_we stick the dirties in a cheap diaper pail with cloth liner that we wash with the diapers
_wash every other day, on hot / cold than one rinse. Than dry on medium.

Pros for my diapers are they grow with the baby so you don't have to go buy more and they're very easy peasy. , no diaper stuffing just wash and dump them where I need them.

Cons are the price and bulkyness. I don't mind t fluffy tush but our diaper bag is huge carrying around those diapers. And they take 3 cycles to dry.

We use a combination of Fuzzibunz One Size and Bum Genius 4.0 pocket diapers for daytime and at night we use Thirsties Fab Fitteds and Bummis Bamboozle fitted diapers with Blueberry covers. We have several brands of wetbags and pail liners: Blueberry, Planetwise, and Itzy Ritzy. So far, the Blueberry ones are holding up the best for us. We have a Diaper Dekor that we took out their bags and the cutter and just put a Blueberry pail liner in for dirty diapers at home.
Diaper change/wash routine:
When my son was EBF, we didn't do any rinsing because everything is water-soluble so it would just go into his wet bag/pail liner and then straight into the wash every other day. Now that he is on solids, we rinse any poop off in the toilet using a diaper sprayer and then all diapers and inserts get sprayed with Biokleen's Bac-Out. Then it goes in his wetbag/pail liner in his room until laundry time. We do a load of diapers on Monday night, Wednesday night, and Saturday morning. We have soft water so we struggled with detergents and amounts to use at first but we finally have success using Tiny Bubbles. We first do a rinse/spin on warm/warm, followed by a heavy duty wash with extra rinse on hot/cold with 1/2 tsp of Tiny Bubbles. That is followed by three rinse/spins on warm/warm. Everything goes in the drier and is dried on low for 90 minutes.
