I would have her use Mr/Ms unless otherwise stated!
Did the teacher tell them his nickname or say "Just call me..." if that was the case I would be ok with it!

Out of respect for the adult/ position I want my LO using Mr./ Ms., but I would be okay with my LO going with the flow in this case.

As a teacher and a parent, I would expect Mr./Mrs./Ms.Last Name. I have a hard time even with our neighbors telling my kids to call them Mr./Miss First Name.

I would be fine with it as long as he was ok with it. But he's the teacher. If he's wants to be called Mr. Timmy (or whatever) he should enforce it with the kids. We tend to be pretty casual though. I was on a playdate with DS and his best friend and the mom referred to her DH as Mr.____ in front of the kids which kept throwing me.

You know what drives me nuts is I use Sir and Ma'am to people I do not know and I have got back rude remarks.....Ohh Call me Jane...Ma'am makes me feel old...well OK "Jane" now that I know your name I will but before hand what was I to call you..lady!

@mediagirl: I guess I'm just confused as to how it could have been 100% kid initiated if the teachers all call him Mr. X. Where'd they hear his first name/nickname in the first place?

DD1 is in preschool and the kids call them teacher (first name).

Oops - I voted "no" incorrectly because the poll was worded opposite to the question in the title of the post.

I am NOT ok with a child calling adults by their first name only. My kids generally call teachers "Ms. Firstname" or "Mr. Firstname". This is also what they call new adults/adults we are not so close to, unless the adult wants to be addressed by their last name. We call family/close friends "Auntie Firstname" or "Uncle Firstname" - but that is probably cultural (DH is from a large Indian family).

In our new school, it's Mrs. Lastname/Mr. Firstname. That, I think, is generational. The first name teachers were mostly new grads/young moms. This recent batch are mostly grandmothers.

@erinbaderin: I see your view! I might be placing more feeling into it because of the source but it was definitely said to be rude a few times!

We have our son refer to his daycare provider as Miss first name. They do the same at school, male teachers are Mr first name and female are Miss first name.
We would correct it if we heard otherwise.

If it doesn't bother the teacher, it wouldn't bother me. But we're pretty casual and don't mind being called by just our first names by anyone including kids.

@mediagirl: You're right, on rereading it's not the thread title I was answering but the question in the second paragraph (if all the other kids were doing it would you be ok with your kid doing it?)

All of M'a preschool teachers are Mrs last name. I prefer this. My husband teaches high school and some teachers have the kids call them by their first name. He's not comfortable with that and I don't think I'd be either.

@Mrs. Lion: Maybe it is a southern thing? Because my friend refers to me as "Ms. First Name" to her son. Which I'm not really used to, not being from around here (though it doesn't bother me, I just think it's funny. I sound so fancy that way! )
