I do regularly and I think I just gave it to LO. Ugh.
I guess it's transferred through sharing cutlery and kisses. :(at least hers looks like a very very mild one.

Yes, since I was a baby, DH too. Saved an awkward convo when I got my first one after we started dating, he understood.
So far we don't think we have given it to DD. I have had a few since we've had her and actually think one just started today. So annoying.

@Beebug: sorry! I hate getting that tingly feeling. :(do you use anything topical? My mom gets a prescription med, Zovirax and I use that which does help shorten the time.
GOLD / wonderful coconut / 33402 posts
DH does He won't kiss me or R when he has one. He is super careful, doesn't want me touching the cups he used, fork, gets a new toothbrush every time, etc.
pomegranate / 3917 posts
@locavore_mama: I used to!, Have used zovirax the pill, and cream. Tried drugstore stuff too (forget the name). I really don't find it makes a huge difference? My Poppa (who also gets them, and my Mom thinks gave them to me as a baby/kid) uses rubbing alcohol on them, and so I do too. It hurts, and it dries the heck out of them, but I find they heal a little faster. I find it's about a 2-week cycle from start (tingle) to gone.

@locavore_mama: I do! I get them when I'm super stressed. I use an over the counter medicine and it helps decrease the length of time it's there.
I had one last summer & was very, very careful to not pass it to C.
clementine / 896 posts
I do. So does my SO. I've gotten them as long as I can remember. Our kids have never gotten one so hopefully they never will. We're very careful when either of us have one.
pineapple / 12526 posts
Yep, so does my mom. I only get them once every couple years though, normally when Im sick or really stressed out/exhausted. Ive gotten them since I was a kid too.
I find that taking Lysine as soon as I feel the tingle REALLY helps to shorten the time.
GOLD / wonderful pomegranate / 28905 posts
@Smurfette: @Koolbreeze: @Mrs. Jump Rope: I wish I would've known I can pass it on by contact. I read that once they get infected the virus just lies dormant and they will have the virus for life.
Ugh.
GOLD / wonderful coconut / 33402 posts
@locavore_mama: yeah, DH got it from a girl on the playground when he was little giving him a kiss.
hostess / wonderful apple seed / 16729 posts
@locavore_mama: Yup, I get them pretty frequently. I finally figured out how to stop the tingly feeling (fever blisters) from turning into cold sores. Lysine! I take lysine pills and use a lysine topical balm. Also, google lysine rich foods and stay away from arginine rich foods and eat the ones that are lysine rich. I realized that blueberries have a high arginine content and that I was getting bulk packs from Costco. I stopped eating them. Well, froze then for little snacks throughout the year.

I do not, but I know several people that get them yearly, I thought it was from a staph infection?
pomelo / 5524 posts
Yes I got a pretty nasty one when I gave birth to LO. All the stress of the birth brought it out. I still get mad when I look at pictures from his birth.
Isn't it the same virus as chicken pox? So if you had chicken pox as a child, the virus stays dormant and you can get cold sores and canker sores? I could be making all of that up though.
hostess / wonderful apple seed / 16729 posts
@locavore_mama: yup, if you have an open sore you can pass it along. My DH will stay away from me like the plague when I tell him I'm starting to get one. He knows we can't share drinks or share eating utensils or food.

@Mrs. Jump Rope: I get them when I'm super stressed/exhausted...sometimes even excessive sun exposure can trigger it is awful. I was so worried I was going to get one during out wedding but that didn't happen thankfully. Sometimes i can go years without having one and then suddenly i feel that awful tingle.
I got one the day after I had LO and I was still in the hospital recovering from my csection. My doctor prescribed some pills that can shorten it's duration (acyclovaire) and it helps soooo much!!!
@locavore_mama: my doctor told me that 90% or more of the population caries the virus and it's just dormant in some people while others have multiple cold sores a year...also, she said canker sores are the same thing just inside your mouth. I would definitely get a prescription for acyclovaire (not sure of the exact spelling)...it GREATLY reduces the duration of the cold sore and I've found it heals so much faster and doesn't get a chance to be super blistery and painful if you start the pills right away.
I have had several cold sores since marrying my husband and he doesn't get them. There is no way I haven't passed it on to him bc he will kiss me and share food/drinks with me...he makes me feel normal and doesn't care when I have a cold sore.
ETA: my dad gets cold sores but my mom does not...neither does my brother.
GOLD / wonderful pomegranate / 28905 posts
@2PeasinaPod: are you asking if the virus for chicken pox and cold sores are the same?
I don't think so because DH has never gotten a cold sore, from me or otherwise but has gotten chicken pox before.
hostess / wonderful apple seed / 16729 posts
@sandy: Stress triggers them but I noticed recently that I've been getting them when I'm not stressed. So for me food and trauma can also do it. I freaking burnt my lip on a cup of coffee and felt those fever blisters hours later. I was so pissed because it was right before a trip. I overdosed on lysine and prevented a cold sore.
GOLD / wonderful pomegranate / 28905 posts
@sandy: it's crazy how some are just more susceptible to it! My whole family gets cold sores numerous times a year. My mom and 2nd brother gets it the worst. When they're sick the area right under their nose just breaks out in sores like crazy.
coconut / 8854 posts
Yep I get them a few times a year! I have a prescription from the doctor that I take whenever I get one!

@bluestriped bee: what is lysine? Prescription or OTC?
hostess / wonderful apple seed / 16729 posts
@locavore_mama: It's over the counter. You can find it in the vitamin section. It's an amino acid.
cantaloupe / 6687 posts
@bluestriped bee: As I've gotten older I've noticed that sun and spicy food can trigger the onset of cold sores :(. It has to be super spicy and get on my lip area...it sucks bc I love spicy food!

I used to get them all the time when I was younger. I get them if I'm super stressed out or from too much sun exposure. I always use a high-SPF lip balm when I'm going to the beach, pool, etc.
I keep a bottle of Valtrex around and take two as soon as I feel the tingle. It almost always goes away immediately! You take two as soon as you feel one coming on, then two the next day, I think. It's really a miracle drug for cold sores.
I've also used Abreva topical, which works pretty well, but nothing like Valtrex.
pear / 1895 posts
@bluestriped bee: I didn't know about lysine! I will have to try that next time.

My husband and I don't get them. As far as I know, they're caused solely by the herpes virus and are super contagious. I think chickenpox is also a strain of the herpes virus, but completely different than the cold sore strain. You can get shingles from having chicken pox in the past, but not cold sores. You can also pass the cold sore virus to your eye or genitals. And I do get canker sores (ulcers inside the mouth), but they're not the virus and aren't contagious.
pomelo / 5621 posts
DH gets them a couple times a year. He is super cautious so he doesn't pass it on to either of us.
cantaloupe / 6791 posts
Nope, DH does, but I've never gotten one. I get awful canker sores though.
pomegranate / 3113 posts
I have gotten them since I was a kid, mainly when I'm really stressed and/or sleep deprived but sometimes just randomly. DH gets them, too, more frequently than I do. We try to be careful about not sharing forks or drinking glasses, kissing, etc when we have sores, but since we both have the virus we're not as careful as we'll have to be once LO arrives.
The sores are caused by the herpes simplex virus (HSV-1) and once you have it, it's in you for life. It's not the same strain as the one that usually causes genital herpes (HSV-2), but you CAN get sores on...ahem...parts of your body other than your mouth if you're not careful. Similarly, genital herpes can be spread to the mouth. I think some crazy high proportion of the population carries HSV-1 (just looked it up and it's almost 60%) so it's more likely than not that a person will catch it at some point...but I definitely want to protect out LO against it for as long as possible!

@loveisstrange: Lysine helps? Is it an OTC vitamin or something?
@bluestripedbee: You AVOID lysine-rich foods?
@2PeasinaPod: They're two separate viruses. Cold sores are a form of herpes. You can spread oral to oral, oral to genital, vice versa, etc.
bananas / 9229 posts
Like @PurplePeony: said - you can have either HSV-1 or HSV-2 oral or genital. So you could have HSV-1 (typically oral) causing genital outbreaks or HSV-1 (typically genital) causing oral outbreaks. It's a matter of how/what type you "catch."

My mom and I both get them. DH, kids, and my dad do not.
@LindsayInNY: Lysine helps immensely, especially if you load up on it right when the tingling starts. Sometimes it prevents it completely, other times it just shortens the duration that you have the cold sore. I buy it at GNC or Target, and I believe it's an amino acid.
The only foods that I avoid when I feel a cold sore coming on are those high in acid like tomatoes and citrus.
pomegranate / 3503 posts
I've always gotten terrible cold sores as well. I have to stay away from triggering food items like mangoes or persimmons even though I love both. Its been more manageable the last 5-6 years. I really try to listen to my body because it usually flairs up when im eating really unhealthy for extended periods of time. I always keep a bottle of lysine supplements in the house and take it if I feel any tingling. It usually prevents it from getting worse. Once I had a flair up so bad that my entire lower lip was swollen
hostess / wonderful apple seed / 16729 posts
@LindsayInNY: Oh, no. I avoid arginine rich foods. I noticed I was saying the wrong thing and tried to fix it in my first response. No, I load up on lysine rich foods, like oatmeal.
GOLD / wonderful pomegranate / 28905 posts
Ugh I just got over one completely and am. Now getting a new one!!! I am so annoyed. And LO's seem to be spreading and is almost becoming rash like???
@shinymama: @BoogieBea: can you take lysine while breastfeeding? The bottle does say to consult your physician if nursing.
