I'm an adult. Buying a pregnancy test should be no big deal, right? I can't help but to get embarrassed a little when I do though. I imagine the person checking me out thinks I'm a teenager and is secretly judging me.

I always felt the same way! I did my best to order them online, but there were a few times I had to go to the store, and would specifically go to a store where I could do self check-out, haha!

I totally feel you! I look quite a bit younger than I actually am, and I always feel like the cashier is judging me. I've only had to buy them a couple of times for wonky cycles, but I'll be ordering online when we TTC

Ha ha, no! I'm not embarassed buying them, but I certainly don't want to talk about it with the cashier. I try to get in a guy's line because the women always have something they want to share. "I use the same one!" "Trying for long?" Etc

Yes! When I got a squinter on a wondfo DH and I went to the grocery store to buy an FRER to confirm but I told him I didn't want to just buy pregnancy tests so I told him to go grab a couple of things and meet me by the tests. 5 minutes later I'm anxiously waiting for him so we can get home and he comes over with his hands full of healthy choices, bread, chips, soda...lol

haha it's so silly. I don't know why but I totally do, too. I KNOW it's irrational.
cantaloupe / 6171 posts
@Leialou: Haha, totally! I ordered them online to avoid someone seeing I was out of town when I got my bfp though and bought sooo much other stuff at the same time to try to minimize the awkwardness. As if it would make a difference, like "lalala I'm very innocently buying mascara and nail files and oh incidentally just this little ol' pregnancy test..."
grapefruit / 4089 posts
@lawbee11: lol I did this too, as though I could sneak the tests through surrounded by other crap.
pear / 1787 posts
whenever i had to buy them i always made a big show of displaying my engagement/wedding band because i totally feel like i'm being judged! i wanna like hide them under my shirt!!! haha

@looch: haha yes! i even get really embarrassed buying toilet paper... so silly.
persimmon / 1183 posts
No, I don't get embarrassed, but I HAVE been "side-eyed" by a cashier. I look young but really don't care. It's none of their business.
pear / 1556 posts
The only time I get embarrassed is during IVF cycles because I buy multiple boxes and I know they think I am insane!

@Leialou: ha! I'm the same. I look young so I feel like I'm being judged.
I actually bought one today (negative, not trying!) and had my 8 month old in tow. I think the lady thought I was crazy.
@lawbee11: when I was pregnant and bought a test I was buying one from the dollar store to confirm the million I had already taken. I also bought a pack of gum and gel pens.

Yes! And my store locks them up with a bunch of other stuff so you have to ask. No way am I going to ask the 60 year old male pharmacist to get some lube for me.
Sometimes I want to test because I am paranoid I am going to have another surprise pregnancy but there is no way I am going to buy a pack with a 22 month old and a 5 month old in tow.

The only time I got embarrassed was at a dollar store where you have to ask for them at the register. The girl asked how many I wanted and I said 5 lol!
nectarine / 2994 posts
Nope! The last time I bought some, the cashier insisted on putting them in a paper bag for me even though I said not to bother - I think she was embarrassed for me!

I wasn't embarrassed, but I once embarrassed a guy on line by buying tests. He had just gotten on line and I was right behind him. He was telling his child to go get his wife (the kid's mom) who was looking at something.
He turned around (I assume to see if I had a lot of stuff and tell me to go ahead while he waited for his wife) and when he saw just my pregnancy test, he turned all kinds of shades of red and stammered that I should go ahead of him.
I had no idea why he got so flustered! I mean, he obviously had a child, so his wife had to have taken a pregnancy test once. But it made me giggle.

I was a little embarrassed getting OPKs and pregnancy tests! I chose the lane w/ a nice older lady lol.
ETA: I couldn't do pre-seed in person... I had to get it online!

@Leialou: Yes, but I was more embarrassed to buy condoms - haha!

Not now. When I was younger, and had a pregnancy scare I was totally embarrassed. It didn't help that the cashier said, "oh shit, you think you're pregnant? kids are so much work!" ummm, thanks?
kiwi / 631 posts
Me too. So far I've bought all mine online. I think I'd make my DH buy them or go through a self checkout if I ever had to buy them in person.
pomegranate / 3577 posts
Nope! I was proud of it, because I was so excited that I might get a BFP. I was a little more shy with it before I had a wedding band to show off, though. lol!
pear / 1558 posts
Nope. Didn't care what they thought. In retrospect I do wonder if a couple of younger checkers thought I was too OLD to be buying tests, lol!
nectarine / 2148 posts
YOUR WORRIES ARE TOTALLY VALIDATED. One time I was checking out and the male worker ringing me out came out and asked me if it was an accident or on purpose I now only buy them online or where there is self checkout.
cantaloupe / 6634 posts
Slightly embarrassed as the dollar store I get my cheapies at is near the high school many of my former students attend.
grapefruit / 4441 posts
@loki: I mostly felt embarrassed when I'd buy more than one box at a time! I generally tried to buy OPKs and HPTs together because I felt like it sent the message it would be a planned pregnancy, lol! I also made sure my wedding ring was very visable

I bought a whole bunch at the dollar store recently. Buying the tests alone doesn't embarrass me, but it bought ALOT with my three other children in tow... Who were behaving poorly....
watermelon / 14467 posts
Yes! It's mortifying, especially when they set off the alarms at the drugstore (which has happened to me TWICE).

I was a little embarrassed one time when we went grocery shopping as a family and my husband grabbed some condoms right before we left. I felt like the cashier was going to judge us but then I thought looking at the two crazy children we had in the cart they might be thinking "Ah thats why they need it!" lok
persimmon / 1461 posts
I'm not embarassed by the cashier, im more like a paranoid android looking around incase anyone I know is in the vicinity, and hiding the packet under random items grabbed off the shelf.... oh yeah I totally need 5 deodorants and some toothpaste!
grapefruit / 4712 posts
Always!!! I live in a small town and I am always terrified that I will run into someone I know! DH thinks it is silly, because we are married there is nothing to be embarrassed about...XP
pear / 1696 posts
@Leialou: No not really but I mostly get them online since they are awesome and cheap! These ship super fast and are in pretty discreet packaging too:

No issues buying tests....always weirdly uncomfortable buying condoms since DH won't LOL
cantaloupe / 6059 posts
The first time yes. I went to a store I knew had self checkouts and that I probably wouldn't see anyone I knew there.
2 kids later not really embarrassed anymore.
