A friend of mine recently got very offended and hurt that I didn't remember her birthday. I was so surprised - I don't expect anyone to remember my birthday (except my family and husband, haha).
Would you be hurt/offended/angry if your friends forgot your birthday? Help me understand this.

I don't get offended, because I'm the third child in my family and even my mom used to forget. My freshman year of college NO ONE acknowledged my birthday.
But I get it. DH is all about birthdays and is more sensitive about it. Especially now that people have facebook reminders.

No, not at all. I have a friend who got really upset with another friend because she forgot. Like, didn't return her phone calls for several months. Grow up. People have other shit going on in their lives.

Nope. We all got busy lives. The only reason I would remember your birthday is if I saw it on FB.

@MaryM: Poor girl! That's pretty bad even if you are the 3rd child.
I only remember my super close knit group of friends, but that's because all of our birthdays are close to one another within a month or so. Two of the guys birthday is the week before mine and the day right after so hard to forget. lol But I don't get offended. We're busy adults, and the day goes by so dang fast, especially if you have kids man.

Nope, I definitely don't get offended. My family has never been big on birthdays--I had years growing up when even I forgot it was my birthday!

@Alivoo01: Well, my birthday is at the beginning of October, so the new people I met at school had only known me for a month so I didn't really count on them to know.
But the fact that I didn't even get a care package from home was kind of sad!

not at all. I had a friend who was pretty upset people forgot her birthday too.
I have trouble remembering what the date is.

@pinkcupcake: If it were my best friend for years and we always celebrated each others birthdays then one year randomly she forgot I would probably be sad about it, I don't know about offended... but I probably wouldn't say anything.
I don't have a friend like that so, no, I do not expect anyone to remember my birthday, nor do I get offended if people do not remember (unless it's my immediate family, or husband! lol... I've had that happen).

@pinkcupcake: I would just say that different people tend to put different importance on birthdays and you apologize that her feelings were hurt, and you didn't know the day was so important to her. She can't really argue with that.

I'd probably be bummed if my very best friend didn't even wish me happy birthday (and not even that day, but maybe sometime during the week), but I wouldn't be hurt. We both have our own families and life is busy, so it's understandable to forget!
If I hurt a friend by not forgetting their birthday though, I would apologize and tell them I'll try to make more of an effort to remember it in the future. Then I'd put it in my Google calendar with an e-mail reminder.

No I wouldn't care. I don't have my birthday listed on Facebook, but I would be touched if a friend did remember. But if they didn't, it's no big deal.

Not at all. And I admit I suck at remembering birthdays... But I also think it's kind of weird when adults are super into their birthdays. Or at least when they expect others to be into it.

@pinkcupcake: did she make a big deal out of your birthday? I could understand someone being hurt if they went out of their way to do something special for your birthday and they got nothing in return (I mean, that's not a reason to give but I'm just trying to give another perspective).
I don't mind though - I'm an adult and it's just another day/another year! I do put reminders in my phone for my close friends birthdays because I would feel really bad if I forgot. I usually try to give something little (especially since they give on my b-day). Although, I forget my best friend's birthday every single year even with reminders!

I never liked being the center of attention so I hated celebrating my birthday in a big crowd. I just like celebrating it with my DH with dinner for 2. I turned the FB notification off so nobody really knows when my birthday is. But after recent events with my Godfather's sudden passing, I think I need to celebrate everything with more intention. Life is such a gift to be celebrated.

No, I wouldn't be offended. I remember a small group of long-time friends' birthdays, & generally they remember mine, but no, I'd only really expect my DH & my family to remember (except my dad--we remind him when bdays are coming up b/c he never remembers any of them 
).
