I preface this with we are moving her on January 5th to a different school.
Earlier this week, we got a letter in our kids mailboxes. It was a letter from a student who is doing an internship at the school (we think, she didn't tell us who she was or why she was writing the letter) asking for donations for outdoor play equipment. She wants every parent to donate something that can be used outdoors for an outdoor play kitchen area. She asked for: A kitchen, dress-up clothes, pots, pans, silverware, dishes and more.
Our tuition went up $10/week 1 month before this letter with no explanation of why. In the letter, she says, "As you know, we cannot do a lot without your help...."
GRRR!

No!! I'm very happy with daycare at the moment! Ever since Xander transitioned to the toddler room (and admittedly, it's only been a few months), I feel like things have been going much smoother! His teacher is great about giving me the lunch/snack menus so I can cross off everything Xander can't eat. She's careful about what she feeds him and we've had no food issues since he moved into that room, even with the Halloween party and people bringing in treats! She's also good about giving him his inhaler when he needs it! Hoping this is a trend to continue after all our issues in the infant room!

Mine are my same complaints I always have:
1. they are always watching TV when I pick up, they assure me they only get TV time during drop off and pick up (in home) but I'm not sure.
2. I don't like her meals, not as healthy as I would like.
I used to have a problem the main lady's phone usage but it hasn't been an issue. I made a backhanded comment one time and it must have stuck. (passive aggressive much haha)

Yes.
One of the ladies in the afternoon is a bit older and seems to have bad hips or knees or legs or something. Which makes her a tad lazy. It's left L with a shitty diaper, that he's CLEARLY been sitting in for a while because if the rash on his bum, when we pick him up.
It's something I need to bring up with the director. I've already talked to the teacher about previous incidents (picked him up and shit fell out of his pant leg and onto my hands and clothes!) and it doesn't appear like things have changed.

Just that the timing with our nanny means I have to go in to work late if DH is traveling, which my boss is really cool about (since she is in the same boat), but DH's traveling has really picked up lately and I just think it looks a bit bad because I can't stay late. And since the nanny has school age kids, she can't really come early or stay late...

I loooove our daycare. One tiny thing is that even though they are amazing at telling me when she ate and napped, and what she did during the day, they don't tell me about diaper changes. I could definitely ask them to but she hasn't had diaper rash so I'm sure it's fine, just less than I change her at home I think-- her diaper is usually heavier when I pick her up than it is when she's w me
Eta it's never been poopy at pick up though, I think they change poop diapers immediately since I've seen them take other kids to change if they poop

I generally really like the new daycare LO goes to this year. One minor annoyance lately is that one teacher tells me every day all the things I packed that LO "didn't like" and then suggests I pack something else.
I'm like....no. I'm not just packing the 3 foods LO likes best and will always eat every single day. I'm going to offer her healthful foods that I make, and if she doesn't eat it all at every meal, I'm fine with that--then she'll be that much more hungry for whatever I give at the next meal.
I work full time out of the house and LO is still MSPI and requires me to make most of her meals, so I'm going to pack what is reasonable for me to prepare.
Same teacher has been giving LO too many pouches as backup, too (which explains the emerging pickiness probably). I only rarely give a pouch at home...I'm more likely to re-offer real foods if LO seems hungry again. But at daycare, if LO doesn't seem to want her breakfast or lunch, then the teacher will just give her a pouch. And I'm wondering if LO has now caught on that she doesn't have to eat the things I've packed...

DD got sent home Monday for a 103 temp. I got her home and her temp was 99. Took her to the doc and it was 99. I don't mind picking her up if she's sick (and She was looking rough) but that evening and the next day she was fine but had to keep her home for 24 hours "fever feel even though I don't think she had a real fever in the first place!

@.twist.: @nana87: regarding poo/pee diapers when you pick them up.
At both daycares LO has gone to since she started, as soon as they see the parent coming in (they both have giant glass windows that face the parking lot/street so they can see the parents walk up/drive in) they race to change that kid's diaper.
That used to always make me suspicious (like...how long have the kids been without a diaper change that they race around like that, doing it as I walk in the door?)
But now, I think it's probably just a smart business move--just in case the kiddo has pooped/peed in the last 15 minutes and the teachers haven't caught it yet. Like, I'm almost positive each daycare had a policy of sending the kids home with a new diaper.
75% of the time, when I walk in, LOs diaper is being changed. That's not coincidence.

He doesn't nap there. But basically nap time there is too early for him, so I don't think it's their fault. They start quiet time at 12:30 and at home he usually doesn't until 1:15 or 1:30.

@catomd00: that's happened to me before, too! Same exact thing. High reading a daycare, only 99 at home and at the doctor, and 100% fine the next day....but with me still having to take a day off work.

I love, love, LOVE our daycare. My only complaint is that he gets more sugary cereal/snacks than I would give him at home, but whatever. He's happy there, he loves his teachers, he talks about his friends all the time. I'll take a few days of cocoa krispies for that!

@Anagram: I don't mind checking dipes right before the parents walk in. Pee dipes also don't concern me. Those are not my issues. My issue is that my kid has clearly been sitting in poop, for who knows how long, and has an entire bum rash (not just crack, cheeks and everything) because of it. I also don't like picking my kid up and having shit fall out of his clothing onto me... I don't even know how that happens, honestly.
This is my only beef with our daycare, and really only with the one teacher. I LOVE IT, otherwise.
cantaloupe / 6171 posts
@Anagram: They don't change her right before I come-- I think they change her after she wakes from nap but sometimes it's been about an hour or so. They actually have diaper change/bathroom time on the schedule (it's a mixed age class so different levels of potty training)2x/day but I've seen them change kids at other times if they're poopy
Eta it's also that I'm just curious how many diapers she's gone through, esp whether or not she pooped while she was there. I only know if she popped if they needed to change her clothes, haha. But, I could ask them to include that in her daily note if I really wanted
eggplant / 11716 posts
@.twist.: @nana87: oh yeah, I'm saying...maybe they *should* make a policy of changing all diapers before sending a kid home. That definitely won't solve a problem where they are letting a baby sit in a poop diaper for a long time (which is horrible), but then at least the parent knows the diaper was just changed.
pineapple / 12802 posts
@Anagram: Oh yes, I totally agree. Normally they do! They see me coming and check his bum right away, sometimes even after I've physically picked him up! LOL. I don't know what it is with this one teacher, I feel bad, but I honestly think it's laziness.

DS's daycare: they serve juice. I've told them not to let him have too much, but of course there is no way I can control it.
DD's babysitter: is late at least once per week. It's usually not a big deal as long as she lets me know, but she ended up being 30min late this week instead of 10min late like she said in her initial message.

Our issue is that we can't afford more of it for me to get more work done at home.

@Anagram: This is not exactly what happens at my daughter's school, but I will say that they do diaper changes right before pick-up - it is marked on her sheet. I agree that it makes sense. She has never had a diaper rash from school.
@birdofafeather: Us too! It's not that we can't afford it even as much as it is that they literally have no more spots left. I love having LO with me as much as I do but I feel pulled in different directions as a WAHM.
I LOVE LO's daycare. Not to be all #soblessed... But really, we are. So happy & grateful.
These are the things I wish were different though.
- She moved to the "older baby" nap time after she turned one. Since they don't move rooms all year, I was surprised they go to a different schedule. I kind of wish she still took a morning nap instead of napping at 12 because it sometimes messes up her afternoon nap that she definitely still needs. (I pick her up at 3 & she usually naps right away but sometimes she's not tired enough.)
- She smells faintly of poo when she had pooped at school. This happens when DH changes her too. She retains poop smell unless you wipe her like 500 times!
Other than that, I just wish they had more days available!

@Anagram: OMG, YES with the "he doesn't like the food you pack for him". Well, if you offer him yogurt, cheese, and fruit before his meatballs, then of course he won't eat the meatballs. They think I would send him with something he doesn't eat at home??
(If you are what you eat, E would be a dairy cow. Seriously.)
Yesterday they freaked out because he scratched himself raw on the back of his leg. Yes, my child is a butt scratcher. And the reason it looks so bad is because you let him scratch his leg during a diaper change. He can do a lot of damage in a few seconds! They're like, "Does his doctor know?! Does he have psoriasis/eczema/etc"?! Uh, no, just don't let him scratch his butt!!
Other than that, our new daycare is the bomb. They do so many activities and they are naeyc accredited, so they are pretty on top of things. I just hope he adjusts faster. The transition from staying at home with daddy playing toys all day to a roomful of toddlers who are nearly all bigger than him has been nothing short of traumatic. I basically cry with him leaving him there and picking him up.

We're really happy right now. I'm just worried about adding #2 to the chaos. It's in home and I don't want my baby to get trampled.

I love love love our daycare. Except - this happened yesterday actually - he went to give a kiss goodbye to one of the other boys & she caught it & said, "we don't kiss boys on the face, we give them high-fives!" All well & good, except I know he gives kisses to the girls there and isn't reprimanded for it all.
Just makes you go

He's only been there about a week but so far we are really, really happy with it!! A few small things...they change his clothes a lot. I usually pack 2/3 outfits in case of blowouts and they almost always send him home with all those in the "dirty bag" but when I look at them there's no poop stains or anything. I think maybe he drools/spits up and they change him. It's great in theory but means a lot of laundry for me!
They also don't wrote the times of his naps down on his sheet. I guess it doesn't really matter (he's 4 months) but I'm always curious. I could probably ask but I know there are a lot of kids so it's probably too much. He had been sleeping really well at night since he started so I guess I don't really care too much, lol.
And...I'm not sure where/how he sleeps. They have a little crib but it has crib bumpers (we don't use them) and he doesn't nap in his crib at home. She's sent me pics of him laying in there with his fuzzy blanket and another pic of him sleeping (just his face) with the blanket all around his face, as if it had been covering his face. Makes me nervous as I am suuuper paranoid about that stuff.
But overall I am very happy. I consider this place the next possible option after me/DH/my mom.

I'm relatively ok with daycare right now.
They have extreme food restrictions which is definitely an annoyance, but it's actually gotten a little more reasonable, and we have to pay full time even though she only goes two-three days a week because they're not consistent.
Lately they've been going on field trips, which is lovely I guess, but means they need our car seat, which is a hassle. Especially since they aren't willing to take on the liability of installing carseats and the vehicle that they take doesn't arrive until after 9am. This means I drop off at 8:15 and then have to go back at 9 to install the seat which is then my "lunch break" for the day.
