Not in our neck of the woods! There are tons of cute, trendy names, but I rarely meet a baby Elizabeth, Jane, Anne, James, or William these days!
How about you? What kinds of names do you hear most often for new babies in your area?

I live in Utah. Traditional names here are Hyrum and Brigham. Ha!
coconut / 8279 posts
Some! I know William, Robert, John, for girls Emily, Isabella, and Olivia are pretty popular.
James is my boy name if we had a second!

Not really. Most of the names I hear are super trendy. One of my good friends is naming her LO Caroline if it's a girl. I love that name and think it's pretty classic.

Lots of Williams, Jacks and Liams... But girl names seem to be trendier. Dd is Charlotte and she is the one and only Charlotte that I know, besides for a 60 year old woman who is friends with my mom. I'm finding out now it's a lot more common in some areas !

@Mrs. Jacks: @rachiecakes: love James!
@lawbee11: I've met a few Carolines! This is one of my favorites I love traditional/classic names and so far, our experience has been that LO's name is actually the unique one... We've never met another little boy with his name (though it's very classic!) in his daycare or activities or playgroups!
coconut / 8483 posts
Not a lot.. Play group we go to has:
James
Brynn
Addison
Bryar
Jagger
Ella
Isla
Lily
Jordan
I do know a baby violet though which I love and consider a bit classic, but maybe "on trend"?
My son has his grandpas name which isn't in the top 1,000 so I'm not sure what it is considered.

Our circles are really a mix. Since we live in an expat community, people are from all over, so there are classic names and names that are more ethic or local to where the kids' families are from. Yesterday we were at a birthday party for a Kenyan boy who has an untraditional African name, I heard some classic Russian and Spanish names and also met a 6-year-old Albert, which I've never heard for a kid.

@rachiecakes: @Mrs. Jacks: James is my son!! Love it.
And yes, I know mostly kids with traditional names. Especially the boys. Almost all of the boy kids I know are very traditional. 4 jacks come to mind!
@Mrs. Champagne: we know a Violet too. Maybe making a comeback?

A girl I went to high school with named her son Thomas, other than that, most names are pretty trendy.

My sons class is filled with traditional names I feel like Thomas and Michael etc

Funny - my DW's favorite two baby names are Elizabeth and William and I am fighting her!!
pomegranate / 3643 posts
James is my most favoritist boy name of all, but it just sounds terrible with our last name. Our last name is similar to Simmons and it just blends together.
I love Elizabeth and William and Anne/Anna. And Jane!
I think the trend here is the "classic but not common" trend (kind of what we went with) and the new wave of names (Brayden, eg).

I feel like lots of the boy names around here are pretty traditional...I don't hear too many trendy boy names at daycare, playground, etc.
Girls names though tend to be pretty trendy, but still popular- we know lots of Ava's, Olivia's, etc.

Ha ha I work in a children's hospital so I see it all
Seems to be a mix in my son's preschool class and among my friends as well... trendy, classic, and made-up names all represented.

@shellio: right?! When a resident calls me with an admit, my first question is "and how are we spelling Kenzie today?" Resident responds with "Kiyenzee"
Of course! No wonder I couldn't find it in the computer.

Very rarely do I hear a traditional girl's name around here, but it seems traditional boy's names like Thomas, Joseph and William are popular in my area.
eggplant / 11824 posts
Yup, lots of traditional names around here (thankfully). In lo's new daycare class we have:
Oliver
Sean
Zane
Grace
Charlotte
And in her old room we had the above plus: Amara, Stella, Caroline, Elliot, Eli, Hazel.

@Mrs. Jacks: Yes. In addition to multiple names I see all the spellings too. Including multiple spellings of classic names. I rarely even try to guess spelling, or even pronunciation.

A friend has a daughter named Dorothy and they call her Dora. I love that name and you never hear it!
squash / 13764 posts
@lawbee11: love that name too!
I actually know a good mix of traditional and trendy--there is a lot of James, Emily, Alex, Elizbeth, but also a lot of Rex, Axel, River, and Delphine.

I think we know a lot of boys with traditional names, and girls vary a lot more. But with the girls it's definitely a lot of the old fashioned names that are back in style (our C's name falls in that category).
pomegranate / 3375 posts
Yep. Lots of names like that here. Our LO's middle name is Jane.
There are also a ton of hipster names like Fern, Sailor, Archer, and Birdie.
I think Portland has some pretty rad names. There's a Satsuma in our music class.

Here they tend to be very classic - at least at the baby level. DD was born in a sea of boys, but we know (under 2):
Benjamin
Ryan
Megan
Oliver
Seth
Christopher
Paul
Jonah
Sophia
So very classic names.

@Mrs. Jacks: DH and I aren't Mormon, but live with extended family who all are, and 80% of our social circle is Mormon. I find Utah naming trends fascinating, especially when you look at how many names that are now common (e.g. Natalie) originated from Utah.
blogger / pineapple / 12381 posts
@farawayviolet: think of us as trend setters (and the land if some horrible spelling!)
kiwi / 556 posts
@Mrs. Jacks: You guys genuinely are! IIRC no other state has such an influence on future popular names.
grapefruit / 4355 posts
Kind of a mix around here. Maybe a little more trendy than traditional but not a lot.
FWIW, we're planning to name our little girl Elizabeth (nn Ellie)!
pomegranate / 3375 posts
@Rainbow Sprinkles: I love that. My bestie's grandmother is "Dottie" (Dorothy). So great!
pomegranate / 3375 posts
@shellio: My husband rolled his eyes when I told him!
Here's the new baby name board at a local birth center. It's a taste of Portland names.
blogger / pineapple / 12381 posts
@littlejoy: those are some big-ass babies! Very Portland
pomegranate / 3375 posts
@Mrs. Jacks: I know!!! Big-ass babies! I was thinking the same thing.
With a free standing birth center, they aren't delivering any babies before 37 weeks, and they aren't doing any inductions ... I assume most of these are 40-41.5 weeks babies!!
Of all the births I've photographed, I've never seen a babe born under 7 lbs. (Including at the hospital with a 38 week mama).
coconut / 8472 posts
@farawayviolet: Natalie's actually a French name with Latin roots, it didn't originate in Utah.
We have a lot of the trendy/popular names around here. We also have a lot of Indian people in this area and they tend to give their kids traditional names from their culture.
It's funny though, I was thinking about the OP's original list of names and I don't think I've ever even met a Jane.
kiwi / 556 posts
@ShootingStar: Sorry, I didn't mean originate, I meant it originally became popular in the US in Utah about ten years prior to elsewhere. Will look for the link later. And be clear in future!
ETA: Here it is http://www.huffingtonpost.com/wait-but-why/how-to-name-a-baby_b_4551427.html

@ShootingStar: I don't know if I've met a Jane either.
Around here it seems to be a mixture of classic/trendy names and less popular names.
@littlejoy: I like a lot of those names!
blogger / pineapple / 12381 posts
@littlejoy: both my girls were smaller than any baby on that board! Strong mamas!
