We live in an apartment building with two main doors that are usually locked. Once you get past those doors, then you have to get through our front door.
So I have to admit that in the past, I wasn't that hardcore about locking the door. But then Mrs. Bee pointed out that if someone was inside our apartment building, then they could just waltz right into our place and steal Charlie. So now I lock the front door.

Yes, my front door is always locked. I always figure the one time I don't lock it something terrible will happen.

My husband used to keep our doors unlocked and he'd even leave the garage door open over night sometimes! Now that we have our baby, I make sure to remind him to lock everything and I double check to make sure he did. -.- My biggest fear is that someone's going to come into our house (we live in a 3 floor condo) and take my baby. What a nightmare that would be..

I am a stickler for locking our front door and back slider but only at bedtime. We live on the top floor of a 3 unit condo in a safe area right outside Boston. But I'm paranoid! My husband always fights me on this especially when there is a nice summer breeze blowing through the backdoor. During the day and if it's nice out I like to leave the back slider open. When baby Winnie arrives I will probably be even more paranoid though!

Our front door is almost always locked (we come and go from the garage) but we used to be pretty relaxed with the backdoor. We live in a safe neighborhood and I used to think that an intruder wouldn't get very far because of our dogs. Then I realized that's a stupid mentality and I could never forgive myself if someone came in and hurt them. So now we are very strict about locking both front and back doors.

I'm definitely a stickler for locking our doors. It's a habit that has actually caused me to lock the hubs outside while he's working in the yard. Oops!

My husband is much more aware of this than I am. I'm good about locking in general, but he's suuuuper anal about deadbolting at night. Whenever I've gone to bed and left the deadbolt open, he gets into this whole, "we could get stolen!"

Like chopsuey119, my husband leaves the garage opened over night. It's never on purpose, and we realize it the next morning. We are trying to make a better effort to check the garage every night. We also have an alarm system, which we really should be using more often.

i'm bad about locking our front door... it's probably because we live in a really really safe city... i think top 5 (might even be #1) for lowest crime rates in the nation.

I lock everything. I never felt a great sense of security in any of my houses. I guess I'm just really aware of my surroundings and the news and want to make sure that I'm not in any danger. I sound really paranoid.

Yep-even though we know all of our neighbors. When I'm home alone during the day, I'll keep the front door locked but I will leave the back door unlocked. And it's just part of our routine to make sure the doors are locked before we go to bed.

we didn't use to, until a woman who thought she was next door (the houses all look similar) waltzed right through our front door. She was harmless and embarassed, but it scared the crap out of me. So now we lock our doors.

We have an auto-lock on our front door, so I don't have to remember to lock it. But honestly, I'm more concerned about DD getting out than anyone getting in! Our dogs go crazy for visitors, so I doubt an intruder would make it very far.

Yup we always lock all the doors. I'm super paranoid about that. My hubs makes fun of me because i even lock the door on our balcony even though it would be extremely difficult for someone to break into our home that way.

Even though we live in a secure building in a gated community, our front door is pretty much always locked. Our sliding glass door is not only always unlocked, it almost always wide open with just the screen closed. We live on the top floor of the building, and the balconies are staggered so that it is literally impossible to get from one to another. The others stick out at least 10 feet in front of ours, and the balcony below us is recessed at least 6 feet. It's very secure.

Absolutely! I would never leave our doors unlocked, even if I was home -- in broad daylight -- in our very safe neighborhood. I can't even fall asleep if I think a door might be unlocked!
It probably has something to do with the fact that our house was broken into and robbed when I was in elementary school. Our garage door was not locked (it was before my parents had a garage door opener installed). That definitely stuck with me.

I have intruder anxiety so I always lock both locks. When I was younger my apartment in Manhattan was burglarized and it was traumatizing. It drives me craaaaaaazay that my husband thinks we live in Mayberry and never locks the door.

My house was broken into, so I'm extra paranoid. I lock everything. I have the deadbolts that you have to use a key to open. It drives Hubby nuts that I lock everything, even the garage door, but it makes me feel better.

Yup, we definitely lock our doors at night. During the day if one of us is at home if the door is shut it's usually locked (we like to just use the screen door to let air into the apartment). My mom drilled it into my head growing up (when we were little our house was robbed and she's been super paranoid ever since), and my husband is pretty cautious as well.

No. We have a 100 pound german shepherd in the house. I only leave it open because I like to have the nanny just come in, rather than ringing the doorbell. I make sure to lock it at night.

We lock everything at night. During the day we might open the front and back doors to allow a breeze through the screens. Those have locks on them that we sometimes set. During the day we also have the garage open b/c we're going in and out that way. If we leave the house by car, the doors get closed and locked.
On the other hand, this locking stuff is all new to me. I grew up in a very safe neighborhood. We didn't lock our doors, walked into our friends houses without knocking, etc. One day my Mom got a call at work. A police officer had been driving through the neighborhood and saw our front door WIDE OPEN! Apparently when my brother left that day he didn't pull it shut fully and the wind blew it open. The office came into the house, called out to find out if anyone was there and found my Mom's work number on the fridge. Her response, "Oh, would you mind just shutting the door behind you? Sorry for the trouble." I think he told her he was going to lock it for safety's sake.

We lock all doors and have a security system. We're in a pretty safe suburb 30 minutes outside of Detroit, but hubby and I are gone for long hours so it just makes sense for us. When we are home or we're out for a jog, we almost always have our back door open and our garage or door open.

During night time and when we are away from the house, we lock all the doors. If I am home alone during the day or night, I lock all the doors. When we are both home and it is daytime/early evening, the doors are unlocked, garage door is usually open.

Yes, ALWAYS. We also turn the alarm on whenever we leave the house and at night when we sleep. We actually live in a very safe neighborhood, but we just like to be extra careful.

We're in an apartment building to which the exterior door is always locked. But I don't care; I always keep our door locked, too. Mr. Pearlbee isn't as good about that.

Always. When I am home the doors are locked. I live in a trailer park and our neighbors are drug dealers... I know the locked door wouldn't actually stop someone who really wanted in but it makes me feel a little better.

I lock anything I can. My front door is always locked (except for when hubby forgets to). I also get made fun of because I always lock my car doors, even when my car is inside the garage- for some reason, hubby finds this hilarious!

When I'm home alone, then yes I do. When he's in town, we just make sure it's locked at bedtime. Of course, it's ALWAYS locked when we're NOT at home, or if I'm the one to close it out of habit.

Yes, always! We live in the city and I'm not always around the front door to monitor who might walk in...but I might leave it unlocked if I knew I could see it all the time.

We have a security door and then our apartment door. We share the security door with another tenant (they're downstairs; we're upstairs). So, I still lock my door - especially because they ALWAYS have people coming and going. I'm considering putting in a dead bolt though. I'm paranoid.

We don't use our front door so it's always locked but the back door is about a 50/50 thing. We live in a small Mennonite town so we're not too worried. Growing up our back door was always unlocked, even after we got robbed.

I always keep our doors locked, but I know most people in my (small) city don't. My co-workers laugh when we have talked about it before, they think it is just because I grew up in a big city that I "bother".
